Virtues for Fitness Success

Virtues for Fitness Success

By: Joe Kozma

If you want your fitness endeavor to be successful the following virtues must be practiced 1.) Desire 2.)Commitment 3.) Goal orientedness 4.) Intensity 5.) Persistance and Perseverance.

Desire is a force of the will which leads people to seek to change their present reality. It is a powerful thing when a person who has long desired to change their body, finally becomes so fed up, that in their their mind there is no alternative but to begin taking the steps to create change. In short, a person has to want to change, and to truly create radical physical change takes total commitment.

Commitment is a dirty word to many in our culture today, but with respect to creating physical change total commitment is necessary. What is total commitment; it is being willing to do whatever it takes to achieve your goal, no matter what. Re-creating your body necessitates a 24/7 commitment. Your food intake must be strictly regulated every meal and snack, every day. You cannot miss workouts just because you are not feeling one hundred percent that day. You cannot miss workouts because you had a bad day or your boss or your spouse is angry with you. Success necessitates that a person overcomes all adversity and sticks to the workout program and eating plan no matter what, without any excuses.

Goal orientedness is having, at the very least, a mental picture of how you want the outcome of your training to be. I strongly advise each and every client of mine to obtain a picture which represents how they want to look. I require that it be a person of similar physical structure who has optimized their physical condition. Constantly meditating on that image keeps a goal visually present and helps immeasurably in fueling the desire to go on to total success

Intensity, if you want to get results from your training, you must train with sufficient intensity. What does this mean? It means pitty-pat workouts will not do the job. I, as a personal trainer have seen people who are wasting time in the gym with low intensity workouts. They go through workouts which do not create results for months, even years, but results will never come unless they put in the sweat and elbow grease it takes to reshape a body. Proper intensity is training as hard as you are capable during the entire length of the workout. Workouts without deep muscle burn will not create change. In my opinion, if you feel no need to grunt and groan at all in your workouts, you are training without sufficient intensity. Sweating is good thing, it is the body’s response to vigorous exercise. No sweat in this trainer’s book equals insufficient intensity.

Persistence and perseverance. Do you want to succeed? Dogged determination to create results must be practiced for a successful training program. What is persistence? It is doing what needs to be done to create physical change each and every scheduled training day without exception. Intense weight training sessions done as scheduled without calling off and never missing your cardio sessions, this will create change Perseverance is gutting it out, sticking to the program even when your mind tells you that you are wasting your time. There will be times when you think that you are not changing quickly enough and it is at these times that you will be tempted to throw in the towel and quit. Perseverance causes a person to do the work necessary for a long enough period of time to attain one’s goals.

5 Important Tips For Great Dental Health

Posted by admin On January - 31 - 2010

Dental health is an important part of everyone’s lives. We receive nourishment from food that must pass first through our mouths. A healthy mouth can mean a healthy person in many ways. However, every mouth is different. There is no exact set of rules that everyone can follow to get the same results. Depending on what food you eat, what medicine you take, what genes you were born with, and your oral hygiene, your mouth can greatly differ from someone else’s. This is why it is very difficult for some to take care of their mouth, while it may be very easy for you.

We probably all know of someone who brushes three times a day, flosses regularly, but still have cavities when they go to the dentist. You may be lucky enough that you only brush once a day and you always have a good checkup. Developing a routine that works for you is essential to your dental health. Here are five important tips that if followed, can result in great dental health.

1. Visit your dentist regularly. Depending on what problems you’ve experienced with your teeth in the past, ‘regularly’ can vary. You may need to see your dentist every three months or so if you have to have your plaque and tartar cleaned out in the case of periodontitis. If you’ve never experience dental issues you may only need to go in every 6 months for a preventative checkup and cleaning. Consult with your dentist while there about a proper routine for your situation. Your dentist should be able to tell you what is best for your mouth. After all, they do see every angle of it during a checkup.

Some problems that your dentist will take into consideration are medications, if you sleep with your mouth open, if you grind your teeth while sleeping, or experience any other sleep conditions, etc. If you’re on medication, there’s a chance that you experience dry-mouth. This condition affects your dental health greatly. If you sleep with your mouth open, you’re more likely to develop gingivitis. Many people have sleep conditions that only allow them to breathe through their mouth. All of these factors must be taken into consideration when formulating a routine for your mouth. Your dentist can help you sort through all of these things and find a plan that works for you.

2. Your diet also has a great deal to do with how healthy your teeth are. Sugar in any form, including brown sugar and the natural sugars found in fruit and dairy products, is a tooth’s worst enemy. Starchy foods are also suspect and should be eaten only as part of a meal. Foods such as raisins and other dried fruits tend to stick to the teeth, enhancing the conditions for destructive acids. Hard candies, breath mints and cough drops also stay in the mouth longer than other foods. The more often you snack, the greater your risk for hosting enamel-destroying acids. If you tend to eat a lot of sweets, you obviously will need to take better care of your teeth than someone who doesn’t.

Eating a healthy diet will help to ensure healthy teeth and gums. Some foods may actually help counter tooth decay. Research has shown that peanuts and aged cheddar, Swiss and Monterey Jack cheeses may actually inhibit or neutralize the acids that cause cavities. However, healthy teeth and gums depend greatly on the types of foods you eat, how often and the length of time the foods remain in your mouth.

3. Between visits to your dentist, you should inspect your mouth. You are, or should be the expert on your mouth. You see it and deal with it on a regular basis. Stay aware of what is going on in order to take any steps to prevent problems. Be on the lookout for several things such as chipped teeth, sores or cuts on the gums or tongue, discoloration of the teeth or any type of pain. If any of these signs show up, you should consult your dentist to see what they recommend.

4. Brushing and flossing your teeth frequently is a must. Brushing three times a day is ideal, but two times is sufficient. You should also floss everyday.

Find a toothbrush that has the American Dental Association (ADA) stamp of approval (found on the package). It should also be labeled “soft” and have round-ended bristles, which means it’s sturdy enough to clean teeth and stimulate gums, but not scour them. An electric toothbrush may help those who have difficulty brushing their teeth, although it’s not proven to clean better than a regular toothbrush. Additionally, replace your toothbrush every two to three months to keep it in good shape to do its job.

As for floss, it is really a personal preference what you use, so long as you use it correctly and regularly. If you find floss difficult to work with, consider using a floss holder or specially designed pick.

5. Another good activity to engage in is using fluoride. Fluoride helps teeth retain calcium, which keeps them strong and slows the production of acids that attack teeth. This is great for your teeth and can be found in toothpastes and mouthwash. After brushing and flossing, use mouthwash to finish it off.

With these steps, you, too, can have great dental health.

Kegel Exercise

Posted by admin On January - 31 - 2010

The Kegel Exercise, named after Dr. Arnold Kegel, is an exercise of the pubococcygeal muscles. This exercised is the regular contracting and relaxing of the pelvic floor muscle designed to restore muscle tone, reduce overactive bladder symptom, and to increase sexual gradification. This exercise has been shown to be of benefit to both men and women in the treatment of urinary incontinence.

Dr. Kegel, the Assistant Professor of Gynecology at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, popularized this exercise in the 1948 in the United States. However several of the ancient cultures developed several different exercises for the same muscles to improve health, longevity, spiritual development and sexual gratification. It was call the Deer Exercises by the Taoist of China. The Aswini Mudra (the horse gesture) by the Yogis of India.

Weakening of the pelvic muscles can be attributive to pregnancy, childbirth, obesity, and poor posture. Surgery can also damage the nerves controlling the urinary track or weaken the muscles, thus causing involuntary contractions and making it harder to control the bladder. Some medication such as sedatives, narcotics, and diuretics can have a detrimental effect in you controlling your urinary system. Chronic illness or conditions like multiple sclerosis, diabetes, stroke, and Parkinson disease can cause you to suffer from an overactive bladder.

For Women the first step in the Kegel Exercise is to determine which muscle that needs to be exercised. For women you can tell which muscles to use by squeezing the muscles in your genital area by pretending that you are trying to stop the flow of urine. This is the pubococcygeal muscle. Get a feeling where this muscle is and how it feels when it is being exercised.

For Men the Kegel exercise is done by contracting the anal sphincter instead of the urinary sphincter as in the woman’s exercise. This is because the pubococcygeal muscle begins around the anus and travels to the urinary sphincter muscle.

Next you want to tighten these muscles and hold them for about four seconds and then relax. You want to repeat this process for about 10 or 20 times. Between each contraction of the muscles you want to make sure that you allow the muscles to relax completely. After you get the hang of it you will be able to contract the muscle for four seconds and then completely relax for four seconds.

Next you want to make sure that you do the Kegel exercises 10 times a day. This is important because if you do fewer than this number you will be lowering the effectiveness of the exercises. Do not become sloppy with the exercise and contract the rectum, your stomach muscles, and thigh muscles. You must exercise the pubococcygeal muscle only.

The great thing about Kegel exercises is that you can do them anywhere and no one will even know you are doing them if you are doing the exercise correctly. For example, you can do them at work, in your car, while you are washing dishes or even watching television. It doesn’t matter where you do them as long as you do them every day.

You don’t want to do these exercises while you are urinating. If you feel you are not exercising the pubococcygeal muscle correctly then women may stop the flow during urination just long enough to get a feel for the muscle again as you did in step one. If the Kegel exercise is performed during urination it could lead to urinary tract infection.

After childbirth a woman can use the Kegel exercise to return to her pre-pregnancy strength and muscle tone. Regular Kegel exercise can also increase sexual pleasure for the woman and their partners.

For men the Kegel exercise can be used to allow them to achieve orgasm with ejaculation and perhaps each multiple orgasms during sex.

Tips For Finding Affordable Missouri Dental Plans

Posted by admin On January - 31 - 2010

Have you been looking for an affordable dental plan in Missouri, but haven’t been having any luck? Missouri Dental Plans are just like anywhere else in the USA, but you have to shop around to find the best one. However, there is one particular type of plan that stands out more than any other out there. This is called a Dental Discount Plan.

Dental Discount Plans aren’t insurance in any way, shape or form. They simply offer consumers substantial discounts on routine dental care, some of which is not covered immediately by purchasing dental insurance. For example, pre-existing conditions are not covered by dental insurance until you’ve gone through a “waiting period” of twelve months or more. They cover most things like cleanings, flouride treatments, ect., but even then you’ll still have to pay your high premiums and deductible costs.

Dental discount plans cost one low annual fee. In Missouri that fee can be as low as $80.00 per year for membership, after which, you simply pay the dentist the cost of the procedures at the time of your visit. Here’s another example. Let’s say that you were visiting the dentist for the first time in quite awhile. This is typical because most people can’t afford it so don’t worry about it. We’ll base this example on the St.Louis area. Let’s say you needed an

In Depth Check-Up – Usual cost $67.00 – Discount cost $26.00 – Savings $41.00

Full Mouth X-Rays – Usual cost $104.00 – Discount cost $51.00 – Savings $53.00

Adult Teeth Cleaning – Usual cost $75.00 – Discount cost $37.00 – Savings $38.00

Protective Sealant / Tooth – Usual Cost $43.00 – Discount cost $20.00 – Savings $23.00

Root Canal Treatment – Molar – Usual cost $829.00 – Discount cost – $400.00 – Savings $429.00

This is just for one plan that is available in the Saint Louis, Missouri area. You’ll notice that the savings add up quickly. I put a few different things on here in this example because this is very realistic if you haven’t visited the dentist in quite awhile. The usual cost for these procedures would be $1118.00. The cost with the discount plan is only $534.00. That’s a savings of $584.00.

You may be thinking “what if I don’t need the Root Canal?”. Alright, let’s do the math without it. Your total cost without the plan would now be $289.00. Your cost with the plan would still only be $134.00, a savings of $155.00. Even if your individual dental plan costed $100.00, you’d still be ahead $55.00. Also, multiply those savings by the number of people in your family and figure in at least one Root Canal, Extraction, Bridge work, Dentures, Braces or some other major dental care. Also figure that you’ll still be able to use the plan for the entire year.

If you live in Missouri and have been considering getting a dental plan, I recommend you take a good look at these inexpensive dental plans first. They may be just what you were in need of.

Beware Diet Pills – This Article Could Save Your Life!

Posted by admin On January - 31 - 2010

I tried a diet drug recently – and it nearly killed me! (My doctor says I was lucky I got to the hospital in time.) But this wasn’t the first diet drug for me. I had tried all the others before that. (You can read more about my long but finally successful transformation from Fat guy to Healthy guy, at my blog: see Author Bio at end of article.)

Note: I don’t know if they can sue a guy, just for putting his story online to help warn others. But just in case, I’ll play it safe: No brand names will be mentioned in this article. (And no, the pill that nearly killed me wasn’t celopin.)

Anyways, every time they put me on a diet pill, I’d suffer through a list various bad side effects. And after I’d had enough (with barely any weight loss results by the way), most of them would be taken off market due to “dangerous side effects” (Note: discovered AFTER we all suffered!), or they were proven UN-effective in losing fat.

Besides, have you tried ordering diet pills recently. As I began my online investigation, I was shocked to see the hundreds of complains about diet pill ripoffs!

Here’s a typical quote:

“On 12/03/06 I placed an online order with www…. they said they had some wrong info in there system and were going to call my Doc for a fax number… Two day’s later it said there was no information the day after that my account was charged and I checked online again and it said My Doctor had rejected it. I spoke with him and he said he has never heard or received anything from them! I sent them 3 more emails asking what was going on and asked for my money back no reply. Yesterday I checked again and it said they are sending me a non prescription alternative. I sent an email back telling them I do not want it I want my money back because they lied. Still no reply.”

Here’s one with a reply from a consumer advocate website (spelling errors left unchanged in the interest of accuracy):

“Ordered product from pharmacy. They substitued a different product than I ordered. I requested to send product back. They stated that in their terms that they can substitue another product. I may return product but they charged $45.00 for processing and cancellation fees plus I have to pay return shipping.”

Response:

“I had the same experience with Pharmacy – ordering one thing and receiving something else. So I called them and requested a refund. Of course, their pat line was that the fine print told me that I could not get a refund once the product had been shipped.”

And this beauty:

“My daughter, friend and I all ordered the “free” thin- tabs for the small shipping and handling fee. Before we knew it we had all been charged $149.99, this happened immediately, and we received a large bottle of the pills which NONE of us accepted and all 3 of us sent back ” refused”. We were all told we had agreed to a monthly club type thing and would be charged EVERY month.

…My daughter canceled her credit card as the only way to get them to stop charging her monthly charges. My friends account was sent to Collections (in Bombay INDIA) and I have yet to see a credit on my Visa.”

After I finally got fed up with diet drugs, I started working out at a gym. The muscle-bound oafs were all recommending various “supplements”, to all the beginners like me. So like a fellow oaf, I tried some of them. More wasted money and time.

The answer to REAL weight loss is NOT drugs. The odd drug may work for awhile, but it’s just a temporary solution and the bad side effects just aren’t worth it. And the answer is definitely NOT “supplements” either.

I’m just trying to do the right thing, and help people to not make the same mistakes *I* made. Don’t get SUCKERED the way I did for so long. Consider yourself warned!

3-Minute Abs Circuit For a Better Six Pack

3-Minute Abs Circuit For a Better Six Pack

By: Anthony Chapman

I have found a way of training the abs as hard as possible in only 3 minutes. You could try different abdominal exercises with the following method but my favourite way to do this circuit is to do 3 lower abdominal type exercises back to back. You get an unbelievable burn in your six-pack during this circuit, it is more difficult and beneficial for working the abs then the standard approach of doing a set and resting and repeating.

This is what to do:

Exercise #1 for 30 seconds

Exercise #2 for 30 seconds

Exercise #3 for 30 seconds

Repeat once with no rest between any of the exercises.

Move immediately from exercise 1, 2 and 3 and repeat them all making sure there are no gaps of rest. This will give you 3 minutes of hard work. A great way to get the most from exercising your abs whether you want to get ripped or shred body fat.

The 3 exercises I like to use are:

Exercise #1 Leg Lowering

Lie face up on the floor and place your hands underneath your low back. Rest on your elbows and forearms so your head is off the floor, your upper body remains in this position during the set. Now straighten you legs and begin to lift your legs off the floor. Aim to bring your legs around 2 feet high above the floor and return them towards the floor but don’t touch the floor on the descent with your legs. The idea is to lift your straight legs up and down without touching the floor for 30 seconds.

It is important to keep pressure on your hands throughout the set, make sure your low back stays in contact with your hands at all times. If you feel your back arching bring your tummy in towards your spine. If you find it difficult to keep pressure on your hands try bending your legs a little.

Exercise #2 Reverse Crunch

Lie on your back with your head on the floor and arms by your side. Bend your knees so your feet are as close to your butt as possible. Now lift your feet off the floor so your thighs are vertical. This position is your start position for every rep; don’t start each rep with your feet on the floor.

From the start position gently roll your low back off the floor and bring your knees towards your chest. When you reach the furthest position you are capable of achieving pause for a second before returning to the start position. Repeat for 30 seconds.

Exercise #3 Knee Push

For this exercise you need to be in the same position as the start position for the reverse crunch exercise. Lie on your back with your head in contact with the floor during the set. Keep the feet off the floor and thighs in a vertical position.

The aim of the exercise is to push your knees up towards the ceiling. Depending on the strength of your abs will determine whether your butt leaves the floor or not. You are striving to push your knees around one inch upwards, that is enough distance to work the exercise properly.

Keep the head and upper body as relaxed as possible during the exercise, this will make your abs work more. The tempo should be moderate and there shouldn’t be any bouncing. Repeat for 30 seconds.

Don’t forget when you have done the 3 exercises in a row go back to the first and repeat them all so you get a 3 minute workout.

You could do this workout at home, at the gym, in the office, hotel room, on the balcony, on the beach or outside in the park. There are no limitations with this workout.

What are your plans after graduation?

Posted by admin On January - 30 - 2010

Melissa talks about her post-dental school plans.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CERuSN_phYU&hl=en

Babies and women may be protected against developing diabetes disease through breast feeding, according to new research. This current study states that the longer women nursed, the lower their risks of developing diabetes.

Diabetes as a medical disorder characterized by varying or persistent elevated blood sugar levels, especially due to eating, is a serious disease which symptoms are very similar for all types of diabetes.

Breast feeding is when a woman feeds a baby or a young child with milk produced from her breasts. The best thing for feeding a baby is breast milk, as experts say, if the mother does not have transmissible infections.

Although study findings are not conclusive, researchers explain that breast-feeding may change metabolism of mothers which may help keep blood sugar levels stable and make the body more sensitive to the blood sugar-regulating hormone insulin.

This theory is based on some evidence that show that in rats and humans that are breast-feeding, mothers have lower blood-sugar levels than those who did not breast-feed.

According to the study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, women who breast-fed for at least one year were about 15 per cent less likely to develop diabetes type 2 than those who never breast-fed. For each additional year of breast-feeding, there was an additional 15 per cent decreased risk.

A total of 157,000 nurses participated in the new study. They answered periodic health questionnaires and were followed for at least 12 years. During the study, 6,277 participants developed type 2 diabetes.

Different Types Of Spas

Posted by admin On January - 30 - 2010

We are usually willing to spend lots of money on clothes, food, traveling and luxuries of life. However, making a trip to the spa and spending money on the treatments available there is something we are rather reluctant to spend money on. The well being of our body is something that has to have a priority in life. So it is actually not a waste spending some money on the treatments in the spa if you are going to get refreshed and rejuvenated after the treatments.

A visit to a spa, even for just an afternoon for a simple massage gives amazing effects to our state of mind. We feel relaxed and happier and can face the hassles of life in a better way. So it is actually worth it making a trip to a spa at least in our lives. However, choosing the right spa for the right treatment proves to be a great task. You have to first have a target to reach for through the treatments in the spa. This is because there are different types of spas that cater to your different needs like relaxation, conditioning, rejuvenation, etc.

There are basically four types of spas. The first is the spa that caters to the wellness of the client. This is for people who have an eventful medical history and treatments are vested after discussions with the client’s licensed health care specialists. Most of the people visiting these spas for treatments are persons recovering from operations and people trying to quit smoking or alcohol. Treatments are administered to the patients according to the case.

The second type of spa is those that take the fitness of the client into consideration. They are specially designed for those who want to relax. Activities like aerobics and outdoor sports are provided here for better physical fitness and relaxation for the client. So this spa is better for the person who is more playful at heart. They enjoy this program because of the chance they are given of learning more activities in the spa.

The third type of spa is the holistic spa. The main reason people join this spa is to learn more about spirituality. This is the best place to head to for to learn more about self-realization. There are different meditation techniques taught here and these treatments come from different cultures and beliefs like the Chinese Tai Chi meditation.

The fourth and the more famous spa is the day spa. People who visit these spas are usually the ones who are more beauty-conscious. Making a visit to these spas gives the client an opportunity to beautify themselves and to relax themselves too. There are different types of treatments that are provided in the day spa that help to relax you and beautify you at the same time like mud packs, sauna baths, massages and yoga. In fact, the day spa is the place the bride and bridegroom head for a few days before the great day!

So making a visit to any form of a spa is greatly suggested. You feel withdrawn from the usual monotonous routine here in the spa, and greatly rejuvenated when you leave it!

One of the most popular elliptical trainers today is the Precor model. Precor introduced the very first elliptical trainer back in 1995 with their Precor EFX elliptical. They are one of the top manufacturers of elliptical trainers today.

However, starting around $2800 and up, they are not cheap. With their reputation and construction, they may appeal to the serious athlete or high-end commercial gym. Is a Precor elliptical right for you? Here’s a brief review to help you decide:

Strengths:

Cross-Ramp technology – The Cross Ramp is unique to Precor and allows you to adjust the incline of the elliptical ramp (the incline is different from the resistance). This works different muscle groups of the legs. It helps to crosstrain and prevents you from reaching an exercise plateau.

High Quality Construction – Precor ellipticals are well known for their high quality components and construction. While they are built to last, you will pay for this as prices start at around $2800 for a Precor home elliptical.

Smooth Motion – Precor elliptical trainers move smoothly both in the forward and back directions. This helps you work and develop different sets of leg muscles. It also helps reduce stress on the joints and gives you a lower impact workout.

Great Elliptical Motion Design – Some cheaper department store ellipticals will give you a “kick” or “bounce” where your heel comes up off the platform. Precor ellipticals don’t do this because of their design which makes for an overall more efficient workout.

Solid Elliptical Warranty – Most Precor ellipticals offer lifetime warranty on the frame, 10 years on parts and 1 year on service. This helps to protect your investment in the long run.

Weaknesses:

Expensive – Although you can’t fault the design or quality, Precor ellipticals are definitely expensive. Starting around $2800 they may be more than most people can afford. They can also be very expensive to fix.

Upper Body Arms – Although some models do offer upper body arms bars, several models do not. Most buyers want to train their upper body arms while working out. And for this price, you really should expect it.

Heart Rate Monitors – Again, like the upper body arms, some models do not offer a way to monitor your heart rate. This is another feature that, considering the price, you would expect to have.

Summary:

While Precor ellipticals are high quality elliptical trainers, be prepared to pay top dollar for the name. They do offer excellent construction and design; however they may be more than many people – especially those new to exercising – need.

And while Precor used to own the elliptical market, new brands are now offering commercial-grade, luxury elliptical machines for much less. If you don’t care about the Precor name, you might want to save some money and look into one of these crosstrainers.

On the other hand, if you are a die-hard Precor fan and can afford it, you’ll probably be very happy choosing this brand. They offer an ultra-smooth ride and are built to last you a very long time.
