The penis is an integral part of the male genitalia and is the external organ utilized for urination and sexual reproduction. The penis is comprised of three separate columns of tissue utilized in the erectile functions. The penis relies solely on blood flow that engorges it in order to form its rigid state necessary for sexual intercourse.

The “corpus cavernosum” and “corpus spongiosum” are the erectile tissues located in the penis. While the “corpus spongiosum is located just on the underside of the penis, the “corpora cavernosa” is made up of two side-by-side columns on the top side of the penis. When the end of the “corpus spongiosum” is engorged with blood, it forms the glans penis which is cone-shaped and enlarged. The foreskin (prepuce) is a loose flap of skin that is retractable and exposes the glans. The glans is what supports the foreskin. On the underside of the penis is the frenum.

Traversing the “corpus spongiosum” is the urethra, which is part of the urinary tract that runs along the penis. The opening of the urinary tract is the “meatus.” The “meatus” is the passage for semen ejaculation and urine and lies on top of the glans penis. Sperm is stored in the epididymus and is produced by the testes, to which it is attached.

The raphe is the visible ridge between the two lateral halves of the underside of the penis that run from the “meatus” to the perineum across the scrotum. When the penis ejaculates semen, the sperm is sent up two ducts that pass behind and over the bladder, the vas deferens. During this trip, more fluid is added to the ejaculate by the seminal vesicles. The vas deferens turn into the ejaculatory ducts, which adjoin the prostate gland and the urethra. The bulbourethral glands and the prostate add even more secretions to the ejaculate just before the semen is expelled through the penis.

7 Simple Bronchitis Treatment Tips
