Milk Protein and Blood Pressure – Is There a Connection?

Nitrates play an important role in the overall health of your immune system and body. It has the potential to lower blood pressure, but isn’t the only alternative remedy being studied. Dairy peptides are another non-medical hypertension treatment that may prove to be an effective remedy for lowering blood pressure.

Dairy what? Dairy peptides are tiny peptides (molecule comprised of two or more amino acids), that are produced when milk protein known as casein is broken down into smaller portions. Two particular peptides that can be manufactured through the use of a naturally attained enzyme preparation are IPP (isoleucine-proline-proline tripeptides) and VPP (valine-proline-proline tripeptides).

IPP and VPP can break milk protein down into hydrolysed casein powder. Furthermore, instead of using an enzyme preparation to break down casein, it can also be produced through fermentation in which case lactic acid bacteria are used.

How does milk protein benefit hypertension? It is believed by researchers that dairy peptides work by preventing the action of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). The prevention of ACE causes a reduction in angiotension II formation, and reduces the constriction of blood vessels, all of which results in lower blood pressure.

Over the past decade, more than 20 human clinical trials have been conducted to discover the blood pressure-lowering effect of dairy peptides. Dairy drinks that contained IPP and VPP were used in the trials. Many of the studies found an average reduction of up to 7 mm Hg for systolic blood pressure and up to 4 mm Hg for diastolic blood pressure among participants treated with the dairy peptides.

The British Journal of Nutrition reported on one of the more recent studies that tested a dairy peptide’s (hydrolised casein) effectiveness of lowering blood pressure. Hydrolised casein contains the two dairy peptides IPP and VPP. This study was conducted on more than 130 participants who suffered from high-normal blood pressure or mild hypertension. The duration of the study was six weeks.

The study consisted of participants taking a daily dose (two tablets) of IPP and VPP. Some of the participants were provided with 1.8mg, some were provided with 2.5mg, and some were provided with 3.6mg. The rest were given placebos. It was discovered that those who were taking 1.8mg had a considerable reduction in systolic blood pressure, six weeks (5.8 mm Hg) into the study. For those taking 2.5 mg or 3.6mg, a considerable reduction in systolic blood pressure was noted during the third week (2.5mg = 3.4 mm Hg and 3.6mg = 4.1 mm Hg) and sixth week (2.5mg = 6.2 mm Hg and 3.6mg = 9.3 mm Hg) of the study.

In the end, it was found that participants who suffered from mild hypertension responded better to the dairy peptide treatment than those who had high-normal blood pressure.

Like most of the studies being conducted on alternative remedies for treating hypertension, dairy peptides need to be tested further before any real conclusions can be made. However, if you find these studies interesting, you may want to bring them to your doctor’s attention to find out how you can get involved or try the treatment yourself.

Finally, keep in mind that if you have milk allergies, or are pregnant, you may not be a candidate for dairy peptides treatment.

Eating Disorder – Binge Eating

Binge eating disorder is an eating disorder in which the sufferer consumes food, unusually large amounts of food, on a regular basis in a brief period of time, hungry or not and continues to eat until they feel rather uncomfortable. These bouts are usually followed by feelings of guilt. Here the sufferer does not induce purging after binging unlike in the case of bulimia. This eating disorder is a problem, which affects both men and women but it is more common in women. This unhealthy habit of overeating tends to develop during childhood.

What are the possible causes of binge eating disorder?

It is still difficult to pin point the exact cause or causes of this disorder. However, the following may be some of the causes of this eating disorder:

Oral Chelation

Oral chelation is the solubilization of a metal salt by forming a chemical complex or sequestering. One way of doing this is with ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid (EDTA) salts, which have a multidentate spiral ligand form that can surround metallic and other ions.

The term “oral” simply refers to “mouth.” When you take something “orally,” you take it into the mouth. Hence, the word oral chelation. This word can be contrasted with “intravenous” which is a word that means that something enters your body through a vein rather than through your mouth.

“Intravenous” actions (including IV Chelation) are generally done by a doctor or a nurse who sticks a needle in a vein, often in your wrist.

The word “chelation” starts with the Greek Root of this word – chele. Chele, in Greek, means the claw part of a crab or lobster. So, “chele” refers to a grabbing action. When combined, getting “chelation” you simply have a word that means the “grabbing action” of some substance. Oral chelation is dispelling substances by taking the preparation orally.

The ingredients which make oral chelation “work” are Cysteine, N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine and EDTA.

EDTA is an important ingredient in oral chelation. It has a chemical and physical characteristic that it is attracted to heavy particles. It is not quite like a magnetic attraction, but in any event when there is EDTA in your blood stream, and some heavy particle (such as a particle of lead, mercury, iron, etc.), the EDTA and the heavy particle come together such that the heavy particle is coated with the EDTA, and passed out by your system

EDTA is an artificial amino acid, and since the body regards it as a foreign substance, the body eliminates the entire particle – the heavy particle coated with EDTA.

The body can’t tell that underneath the coating is some material (iron mixed with carbon, perhaps) which the body might be willing to keep even though it is harmful to the body. So, this coated EDTA particle gets sent to the kidney and you urinate it out into the toilet. You just got rid of some heavy particles.

EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) is a common sequestrant and antioxidant which is a part of oral chelation. This oral chelation is added to foods, body care, and household products.

The oral chelation also occurs as disodium calcium EDTA, tetrasodium EDTA, and disodium dihydrogen EDTA. As a sequestrant, this oral chelation binds trace minerals such as copper, iron and nickel that may be in the product. If not inactivated, these minerals will lead to discoloration, rancidity and textural breakdown. When added as an antioxidant, EDTA prevents oxygen from causing color changes and rancidity.

Stuttering Self Help

I am Stephen Hill from Birmingham in England. I started to stutter in childhood at the age of four or five. I attended a lot of different types of speech therapy, some in groups, some on a one to one basis. I have had lots of stuttering advice on how to stop stuttering. These are some:

slowing down my breath
costal breathing
prolonged speech
taking a deep breath before I spoke

I had began in the class called, preschool stuttering. This term is labelled by the stuttering speech therapist or the stuttering speech pathologist. My parents were reassured that most people who stutter in childhood soon grow out of it. Well I was one of those who didn’t.

I then joined the class called, childhood stuttering. I continued to attend speech therapy and joining in with their speech therapy activities and their speech therapy games.

I then progressed to the class called, adult stuttering. I now decided that speech therapy was not really working for me.

I decided to try my own form of stutter self help.
Even though I had a stutter, at times I could talk very well. As an example when I was drunk, I spoke nearly perfectly fluent.

After nearly a year I managed to overcome stuttering and eradicate the stutter once and for all. As a career I now help other people to stop stuttering.
