Ladies – Grab Those Weights

Posted by admin On January - 31 - 2009

Strength training was once a practice reserved for male competitive athletes and bodybuilders. Fortunately, those outdated ideas are where they belong…in the past. Strength training has been proven to benefit all populations and it is absolutely essential if we wish to change the look of our bodies. Women especially reap huge benefits both physically and mentally from weight bearing exercise. Strength training creates strong ligaments and tendons, which serve to support the joints and decrease the likelihood of injury from other activities. It is the best thing a woman can do to reduce her risk of osteoporosis because working with weights increases bone density. Strength training also increases your metabolism as well because by creating muscle tissue, you are creating tissue that is active and using energy (calories) even when at rest. And maybe one of the sweetest surprise benefits of strength training for women is the confidence and sense of control it can give you, not to mention the ability to perform daily activities that require lifting with ease. (No more waiting for your husband to get home to open a jar!)

So, how many of you women out there are afraid that if you lift weights you will get muscles that are too big? This is a common fear and nothing more than a myth. The vast majority of women cannot build large muscles because it is a genetic impossibility to do so. Women have high levels of the hormone estrogen and so the increase in muscle size that men (who have high levels of testosterone) have can never be the same for women. When women strength train they will see a difference in muscle tone, strength and endurance and not necessarily in size. Don’t be afraid of the weights, ladies, strength training is something wonderful that you can do for your body!

Another common myth is that you need to lose your fat before working on toning your muscle. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you are overweight and wanting to lose fat, you should be performing weight-bearing exercise along with cardiovascular exercise. By challenging your muscles with weights you are burning more calories than if you did cardio alone, you are building muscle tissue which in turn burns fat for fuel and you are less likely to have droopy skin from losing weight because you will have the toned muscle underneath. A routine consisting of cardio activities such as walking, jogging, aerobic classes, etc. combined with lifting weights is without a doubt the most effective way to achieve your weight loss goals.

We all know that women today are very busy. Have no fear because strength training need not be time consuming. A good weight-training workout can take as little as 20 minutes. Some things to consider; don’t be afraid of the weight! You want to feel challenged when you are lifting weights. For example, if you are doing bicep curls and aiming for 12 repetitions, you should be feeling them by the tenth repetition and the twelfth should be very challenging. If you are not challenging your muscles than you are wasting your time and energy! Also, it is important to work all major muscle groups to keep your muscles in balance. In other words, don’t only do bicep curls, you want to also work your triceps so that the final result is the nice toned and proportionate look your going for.

For the safest, most effective program, seek the advice of fitness professional. You can also pick up a book or video on the subject or join a gym. Get yourself familiar with strength training and get started! It is a decision you will not regret!

Going From Fat To Fit – An Inteview With Ray Burton Part 1

Posted by admin On January - 31 - 2009

Larry: If you want to lose weight join the army. Today we have with us two-time winner of the most physically fit soldier award, Ray Burton. Forget about the latest fad, Ray has a plan for you. Hey Ray is there global warming up there too?

Hey Larry, ya no, I just woke up this morning and stuck my head out of the igloo this morning and came back from tracking some polar bears but other than that its a normal day in Canada.

Robin: Laughs. Polar bears! I love that! Laughs.

Your book is not..not a very big book. And I’m guessing the information we read in it is all you really need.

Ray: There ya go!

Larry: You know when something just rings true?

Robin: Um hum

Larry: Then you kind of have a good feeling about it. And I guess that’s the feeling I got from this book. It just rings true, ya know? So many people come on and they will write books that are like 800 pages and, actually that one guy had a good book..

Robin: Laughs..yea

Larry: But what I’m trying to get at is it’s a very thick book and what you say is, “Do I really have to read all this to get in shape?” Your book is about…let me look at the numbers..154 pages long or so.

Robin: Uh huh

Ray: With the pictures!

Everybody laughs…

Larry: Ya,”With Pictures!”, which is good for me. Am I right in assuming you have never, really been heavy?

Ray: Ah, no. I have been heavy at one point. One time I ended up in the hospital and when I came out I had previously been into bodybuilding and just your self image when your into that kind of sport, makes you really want to…well everything you are is identified by your outward appearance..ya know, when you first get into it. So I had been muscular and big, got sick, ended up in the hospital and lost a lot of weight. When I came out, I overcompensated and got quite heavy trying to get back to where I was and I ended up just being fat.

It was a mixed blessing actually because I had identified myself so much with what I saw in the mirror at the time that….when I became fat for lack of a better term, I, ah, got to experience what it was like to feel that way. And it was an eye opener.

Larry: Really…Ray have you ever seen that movie “Super Size Me?”

Ray: Oh yeah..yeah

Larry: In his case, for those of you who have never seen the story..I’ve just seen the interviews. Apparently he went on a month long, nothing but fatty food from MacDonald’s, that kind of thing. And then he got the fat cells in his body, which he never had them before. And now he has a hard time keeping the weight off. Did that happen to you?

Ray: No, it didn’t. There are a couple of view points on that whole deal. But the most predominant theory is that the amount of fat cells you have on your body is mostly formed during your younger years. And….that’s what makes me quite passionate about talking. When people come in to see me, its not just about them, but the clientele, the age group that I am dealing with now, most have children. And ahh, if the parents can eat right and take care of themselves, those habits get passed on. And if the children are going to eat right at this early development stages, they don’t run the risk of overdeveloping, well not overdeveloping but creating lots of fat cells early on that later on can really fill up easily. Because they don’t ever really go away, they just kind of shrink. And so you can actually “puff” them back up quite easily. And so if you don’t get lots of these when you are younger, just through proper eating and living…proper. When you get older that happening is not such a concern.

Robin: And is this a myth or a real truth? I have always heard that when a person is into bodybuilding, once that person stops, that all of those toned muscles go away and just turn into fat. And you can’t control that. Is that true or false?

Ray: False, it’s a good one though Robin. I hear it a lot because when people come in and state their goals its almost always “Well I’d like to lose a bit off my tummy. I’d like to firm up my butt”, but back in my bodybuilding days what I heard a lot was “but I don’t want to look like you!”

*Everyone laughs*

Ray: You know because there is a common misconception that it does turn to fat, but its changing one form of matter into another which just doesn’t happen. What really actually happens is that if you stop training your body reacts. Your body gears itself up for whatever it experiences on a daily basis. So if you don’t use it for a certain purpose, you lose it.

So if you stop lifting heavy enough, your muscles will go away. And then when your muscles go away, what happens is your metabolism slows down and that’s why resistance training plays such a big roll in any weight loss program. Because any amount of muscle you put on, which develops your shape, is going to increase your metabolism.

And then so what happens when you stop training, and what most people do when they get older is, your muscle will shrink because they’re not using it, and their metabolism slows down, their hormone levels shift because their not experiencing the workload that the body likes. You know, a body needs to work, that’s the way it was designed. And then once all that happens, the fat starts creeping on.

Usually what happens is when you are eating…you can get away with a lot more calories when you are training on a regular basis and once you stop training but keep the same dietary habits, now you are consuming too many calories. So it’s kind of a bunch of events converging at the same time, but there is not an actual shift of how much muscle mass you have translating into fat later on at all.

Larry: Have you, given some of the things you have learned in the army, applied them to what’s in the book right now?

Ray: Massively. Thanks for bringing that up Larry! LOL My life has been…Devine, I would say in the way that it has unfolded with the, having gained weight, having been in the army and tried bodybuilding and all these things. Everything has come to this point right now where the experience I have helps me help other people. And the stuff that I learned in the army, was..you get put out in the middle of the woods, in the middle of nowhere, for a period of a couple weeks to a month or whatever, with no access to any sort of fancy equipment, well no equipment at all actually. And through that I learned how to work out, how to stay in shape simply using my own bodyweight.

Cholesterol – How To Manage It Without Drugs

Posted by admin On January - 31 - 2009

To recap, a normal total cholesterol level would be less than 200 milligrams per decilitre (mg/dl) of blood. This will be made up of LDL or “bad” cholesterol which should be maintained at between 100 – 130 mg/dl and “good” cholesterol which should be more than 40 or 50 mg/dl.

There is now medication available to control cholesterol levels but the good news is that one doesn’t have to resort to drugs to improve the lipoid profile (levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood). This advice will help you:

Include aerobic exercise in your daily routine. Walking at a rapid pace, running, riding a bicycle and swimming are all good options, which should always be practised for between a half and one hour, a minimum of four times a week.

Give up smoking.

Observe an authentic Mediterranean diet, rich in fruit and vegetables, fish, pulses and olive oil.

Eat little refined flour and processed food.

Contrary to what people think, a diet low in fat doesn’t help to increase the levels of “good” cholesterol (HDL) and can even reduce them if you account for the calories saved by eating refined carbohydrates.

The best fats for the heart and the arteries are monounsaturated fats (present in olive oil, nuts, oily fish such as mackerel and salmon, and avocados) which increase the “good” cholesterol but not the “bad”.

It is extremely important to eliminate “trans” fats (present in vegetable oils, which are subjected to a process of hydrogenisation to convert them to solids, which are much easier for the industry to manipulate, used especially in deep frying, biscuits and savoury snacks).

Another change which is healthy for the heart is to increase the quantity of soluble fibre (present in fruit, vegetables, pulses and oats) in the diet.

Alcohol consumed in moderation helps to increase HDL. It is known that one or two glasses of wine a day significantly increase these levels. More than this quantity can have harmful effects on cardiovascular health and increase the risk of cancer and disease.

Before I tell you more, let’s talk about you!

People have told you that you’re good with your hands!
You love making people feel good and you would love making
money while you do!

So now you say to yourself, “I need to find the right
school for me.”

You start calling schools and every single school tells
you they are the best school and each school claims that
when you graduate you’ll have all the skills you need to
start your exciting new career. Wow! An exciting new
career awaits you!

But whoa! Stop! Hold your horses! Which school do you
pick? They all say they’re the best! Can they all be? Can
they all be the best for you?

How do you choose the school that will give you the
highest level of training so you’ll be one of the most
sought after massage therapists in the field?

How will you know the difference between a school that
offers you an exceptional education and a school that
offers you a slick marketing campaign but gives you a
mediocre education?

Well, I’ve got a secret. I’ve worked on the inside as an
“Admissions Director” in a number of schools from big
corporate schools to small schools and I know what they
do to try
to “convince you” to go to their school regardless of the
quality of education you’ll receive and regardless of what
would be best for you!

They don’t want you to know the inside secrets which I’m
about to share with you.

Now, don’t get me wrong, there a number of exceptional
massage therapy schools throughout the country and the 3
powerful questions you’ll receive momentarily will help
you find those diamonds amongst the glass!

Here’s more of the secret! All massage therapy schools
are a business. Well, nothings wrong with that, but the
problem comes when a school cares more about the bottom
line than the success of their students.

So what do some schools do? Sometimes they invest more
money in their marketing than they do in the quality of
your education. Why would any school do that? It’s a whole
lot easier to create slick marketing ads than it is to
create an exceptional curriculum and education!

A number of schools pay big bucks to giant marketing
companies to spin their school so you will enroll! What
are most people impressed by? Pretty, shiny brochures,
with pretty shiny people in it and polished sales
presentations.

Now there’s nothing wrong with all that, but will any of
those marketing devices really let you know the true
quality of education you’ll actually receive?

No, but people usually base their decision to enroll in a
school based on the sales pitch they are given and if they
“like” the “admissions advisor”. Now some of you may know
this already, but the titles; “admissions rep” or
admissions advisor are simply fancy names for trained
sales people that have big quotas to meet and in some
schools you are simply a number to help them meet that
quota! I should know, I used to train them!

Now even though your “admissions rep” may be a really
wonderful person, how can you possibly know the quality of
the education you’ll receive from a person telling you
what they want you to hear.

This brings us to the 3 powerful, secret questions you
*must* ask to find the truly exceptional school:

#1. How many modalities will you be able to *practice*
upon graduation?
(A modality is a style of massage)

Why is it so important to learn multiple modalities? If
you only learn one style of massage, you will be working
in the same way every day. If you do anything
repetitively, you risk injury or burnout and with only one
style of massage, believe me, you will get burned out! If
you learn multiple styles you will enjoy massaging your
clients for years!

Imagine if you were a hair stylist but were only taught
how to cut one style of hair. Let’s say a bowl-cut. Two
things would happen. One, you would get very bored and
two, not all of your clients would want that particular
style. One style does not fit all.

The same goes for your massage therapy clients. Each of
them will need different styles depending on who they are
and what they need from their massage therapy session.
Some will need the energizing effects of Shiatsu. Some
will need the deeper work of Neuro-muscular therapy. Some
clients may need the clearing work of polarity. Make sure
the school you select offers multiple modalities!

Now here’s another secret! A slick marketing trick that a
number of schools use. Most schools offer only one type of
massage training and little teaser intros on some other
types during your education. They usually include these
teasers in their brochures and presentations. You will
probably think you learn all of those styles during your
training but in reality, they do *not* teach you the other
styles. You will only be qualified to practice *one* type
of massage upon your graduation.

Remember, ask the school how many modalities you will be
qualified to practice when you graduate!

#2. How does the school teach body mechanics, that is how
will they teach you the techniques of massaging clients so
you won’t burn-out?

Did you know that over 100,000 new massage therapists
have left the field in the last 4 years? Why? Simple
answer. Because of burnout. They were not taught the
proper way of using their bodies to massage their clients.
Make sure the school you select can clearly explain to you
how they’ll teach you good body mechanics.

#3. Does the school offer a holistic approach to your
training and have them explain it to you.
(This is the MOST important question because most
schools teach a one dimensional technical approach.)

You need to decide if you want a technical training,
which teaches you how to do a technical massage which is
very one dimensional or a holistic training which teaches
multiple modalities and has a multi-dimensional approach.

Graduates of technical based massage therapy schools
receive a competent knowledge of the body and learn a
thorough technical approach to giving massages to their
clients, but they tend to give their clients impersonal,
technical massages. They simply learn how to move muscles
around.

Graduates of a holistic training not only learn the
science of massage, you will actually transform as a
person which will make you a better therapist. From that
foundation you can then transform your client during their
massage session.

How will you transform as a person you may ask? A
holistic massage therapy school teaches you from a
Mind/Body/Spirit approach that is heart-centered and takes
into account the entire person not simply their muscles.
It’s not just what techniques you use in a massage that
matter, but how you apply those techniques. The “how”
involves the kind of environment you create during your
session so your client feels safe and open to receive your
massage.

That massage would then be called a “Mindful Massage”.
Being mindful means you learn how to become calm,
centered, open-hearted and fully focused on your client
throughout the massage. Mindfulness also involves being
“embodied.” Embodiment means you are not just in your
“head” but alive and aware in your body and connected
with the entire Wisdom of your Being. All of this allows
you to trust your intuition to create a unique massage
every time for your client instead of the same “routine.”

Your clients will receive a much deeper experience from
someone who is trained in the holistic approach. If you
have a client that has only known the technical massage,
they will be absolutely blown away by the multi-
dimensional, heart centered holistic massage that you give
them!

In a technical massage the massage therapist works “on”
you. In a heart-centered holistic massage, the therapist
works “with” you.

I have a test you can try on your self right now that
illustrates the difference perfectly!

Test # 1. Take your left thumb and find a spot on your
right forearm that’s sore. Press down hard on it with
your thumb. How does that feel?

Test # 2. Now, take your right thumb and find a spot on
your left forearm that is sore. Lightly place your thumb
over that spot. Lightly. Take a deep breath in and as you
exhale, increase your pressure only as fast as the muscle
releases under your thumb. This is called sinking in. You
sink into the muscle instead of pushing on it.

Which experience did you prefer? If you picked # 1, then
by all means go to a technical massage school. However,
if you picked # 2, a holistic massage school would be
perfect for you. I think your clients would probably
pick # 2 as well.

You now have the 3 *powerful* questions that will help
you choose the perfect massage school for you. Make sure
that you ask these 3 questions to any school that you are
considering and you will find the school of your dreams!

Gain More Muscle By Training Less Often

Posted by admin On January - 30 - 2009

The more work you put into something, the better results you will achieve. This has always been a widely accepted truth that applies to many areas of life. The harder you study, the better grades you will achieve. The more time you spend fine-tuning your athletic skills, the better athlete you will become. The longer you spend learning to play an instrument, the better musician you will become. Therefore, it only makes sense that the more time you spend in the gym, the stronger and more muscular your physique will become, correct? Contrary to what you might think, the answer to this question is a gigantic, definite, absolute no! It is in this area of bodybuilding that conventional wisdom goes straight out the window, down the street and around the corner.

I know what you might be asking yourself…

“What? Spending less time in the gym will actually make me bigger and stronger?”

Yes! It really will, and when we examine the muscle-growth process from its most basic roots, it becomes quite clear why this is the case.

Every single process that occurs within the human body is centered around keeping you alive and healthy. Through thousands of years of evolution the human body has become quite a fine-tuned organism that can adapt well to the specific conditions that are placed upon it. We become uncomfortable when we are hungry or thirsty, we acquire a suntan when high amounts of UV rays are present, we build calluses to protect our skin, etc. So what happens when we break down muscle tissue in the gym? If you answered something to the effect of “the muscles get bigger and stronger”, then congratulations! You are absolutely correct. By battling against resistance beyond the muscle’s present capacity we have posed a threat to the musculature. The body recognizes this as potentially harmful and as a natural adaptive response the muscles will hypertrophy (increase in size) to protect the body against this threat. As we consistently increase the resistance from week to week the body will continue to adapt and grow.

Sound simple? Ultimately it is, but the most important thing to realize in relation to all of this is that the muscles can only grow bigger and stronger if they are provided with sufficient recovery time. Without the proper recovery time, the muscle growth process simply cannot take place.

Your goal in the gym should be to train with the minimum amount of volume needed to yield an adaptive response. Once you have pushed your muscles beyond their present capacity and have triggered your thousand-year-old evolutionary alarm system, you have done your job. Any further stress to the body will simply increase your recovery time, weaken the immune system and send your body into catabolic overdrive.

Most people train way too often and with far more sets than they really need to. High intensity weight training is much more stressful to the body than most people think. The majority of people structure their workout programs in a manner that actually hinders their gains and prevents them from making the progress that they deserve. Here are 3 basic guidelines that you should follow if you want to achieve maximum gains:

1) Train no more than 3 days per week.

2) Do not let your workouts last for longer then 1 hour.

3) Perform 5-8 sets for large muscle groups (chest, back, thighs) and 2-4 sets for smaller muscle groups (shoulders, biceps, triceps, calves, abs).

Take all sets to the point of muscular failure and focus on progressing in either weight or reps each week. If you truly train hard and are consistent, training more often or any longer than this will be counterproductive to your gains!

Curing Bad Breath from Home – Fast and Easy

Posted by admin On January - 30 - 2009

Bad breath is such a difficult thing to deal with that it actually could be classified as a social disease. If you have ever been told that your breath stinks then you know exactly what I am talking about. Nobody wants to be told that they have this problem, but the person that told you probably did you one of the biggest favors that you could ever know. What could be worse that going around offending everyone and not knowing it? So now that you know that you have a problem with bad breath how are you going to go about curing bad breath and keeping it away once and for all?

There are several ways that are very popular in keeping your breath fresh. One of the most popular is just by brushing your teeth more often, and that can sure help but when you are away from home at work or school then you have the problem of not having access to your toothbrush. The food that you eat, plus going long periods of time with a stale mouth will certainly cause your bad breath to escalate. Fortunately there are plenty of gadgets out now that can help you to keep your mouth fresh even when you are on the run. From floss that comes in containers like a pack of matches to disposable toothbrushes with the toothpaste built in, there really isn’t a reason not to have a fresh mouth at all times.

There are also plenty of natural methods, or homeopathic methods of curing your bad breath. These would include keeping some citrus fruit (lemons, limes and oranges) on you to help keep your mouth fresh. You could also try laying off the cigarettes, alcohol and coffee for a while to see if this helps. Dieting may also be the culprit and as your body begins to burn fat it may show up as bad breath. It would be best to try to make changes one at a time, perhaps for a day or two each, to see what it is that is causing your bad breath. Once you know what the cause it then you can go about curing it.

Bird Flu and Your Personal Safety

Posted by admin On January - 30 - 2009

The world we live in today is not safer than the one known by our parents and grandparents. If you’ve kept up with the news lately, you’ve heard terrible warnings about bird flu. It’s the most serious known health threat the world is facing that has swept through the world bird population. There’s never a total absence of risks in our lives. Risks are voluntary actions and can be managed. Emergencies can be met and handled, but it takes know-how and continuous awareness. What you can’t prevent, you can usually compensate for or protect against. With alarm growing over the possibility of a bird flu pandemic, we all must acknowledge the fact that we bear some of the responsibility for making our environment safe and safety is thinking about other people, too.

“Remember that we live on the same planet and our interests are interconnected”.

The following statements provide a summary of bird flu outbreaks:

• It’s caused by the influenza A (H5N1) virus.

• The infection can occur through the inhalation of the material infected with virus like cages, bird feeds, clothing, shoes of workers in farms, and any contaminated equipment.

• There is a greater risk of getting bird flu while handling the infected bird or infected eggs than eating these foods, as most cases of bird flu infection in humans have resulted from direct or close contact with infected poultry or surfaces contaminated with secretions and excretions from infected birds.

• Scientists believe that at least some migratory waterfowl are now carrying the virus and introducing the virus to poultry droves in areas that lie along their migratory routes.

• Within a country the disease spreads easily from farm to farm. Even small quantities of bird droppings carry a large load of the virus.

• Bird flu can appear within 1 – 5 days after contact with the infected material.

• It can pass from bird to bird, and from bird to human. No noticeable evidence to confirm human-to-human transmission of bird flu.The fear is that mutation of the virus will cause it to be easily spread from person to person, since flu viruses can change rapidly.

• The symptoms of bird flu in humans have ranged from standard flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat and muscle aches to eye infections and other complications.

• It has killed around 55% of the people it has infected so far.

• Humans have no immunity to it.

• There is no vaccine. Any new vaccine will be limited, not widely available.

• Antibiotics are useless against virus-caused flu.

• It can be contained through quarantine.

The best way to cut the risk of attack is by taking sensible precautions. You are probably already aware of some of the precautions listed below, but some may be new to you, and you may find them useful. According to The US Department of Agriculture; “Proper handling and cooking of poultry provides further protection against this virus, as it does against many viruses and bacteria, including Salmonella and E.coli. Safe food handling and preparation is important at all times”.

Here is a summary of USDA recommendations:

• Wash hands with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds before and after handling food (like fresh poultry and or eggs;

• Prevent cross-contamination by keeping raw meat, poultry, fish, and their juices away from other foods;

• After cutting raw meats, wash cutting board, knife, and counter tops with hot, soapy water;

• Sanitize cutting boards by using a solution of 1 teaspoon chlorine bleach in 1 quart of water; and

• Use a food thermometer to ensure food has reached the proper temperature. Cook whole birds to 180 °F; breasts to 170 °F; drumsticks, thighs and wings to 180 °F; ground turkey and chicken to 165º F; and a minimum oven temperature of 325 °F.

To paraphrase …

If the food is well cooked, there is hardly any risk of getting bird flu as no data suggest that the disease can be transmitted to humans through properly cooked food (even if contaminated with the virus prior to cooking). And in general, frequent and thorough hand washing is to be observed to avoid getting the disease during processing and cooking of possibly infected poultry.

While your government will follow certain policy and procedures to prepare for a pandemic, people action and people responsibility are of vital importance for the success of any plan to maximize our preparation So if there is an outbreak of the bird flu virus, the solution is readily available if people would just get the right information on flu prevention and treatment with vaccines or other medical products. Knowledge is POWER and we need to be prepared for an outbreak of bird flu.

Altogether, more than 50% of the confirmed cases have been fatal. This kind of flu in humans is still a relatively rare disease, but a very strict one that must be taken into consideration and closely studied, because of the potential this virus to evolve in ways that could cause a human pandemic.

Allergy Treatment

Posted by admin On January - 30 - 2009

Millions of Americans suffer from allergies. Many people are afflicted with some type of allergy to all sorts of things, such as environmental allergens, odors, fumes, food, and cigarette smoke are few of the factors. Allergies despite not being diseases can severely affect your health for weeks. Allergy is widespread and affects approximately one in four of the population in the UK at some time in their lives. According to a study each year the numbers are increasing approximately by 5% with as many as half of all those affected being children.

Allergy is basically a Greek term which means “other work”. The term allergy is used to describe a response, by the body, to a substance, which is not necessarily harmful itself, but results immune responses and reactions that causes symptoms and disease in a predisposed person, causing inconvenience, or a great deal of misery. It occurs when the body’s immune system overreacts to normally harmless substances. It is a popular form of immune reaction which creates the process of irritating the body through means of itching. Allergy is a common disorder which is virtually affecting more than 50% of the total world population in one way or the other. By allergy the immune system reacts against a substance that it is not supposed to react against, and the reaction is often exaggerated. Allergy often leads to the formation of certain chronic diseases. Allergy may be caused due to weather, dust, food, pollution, animals, flowers, plants etc and the list is quite unending. Objects containing substances that commonly cause allergy are domestic dust, animal hair, household chemicals, chlorine, microorganisms, pollen, nuts, citrus fruits and seafood. Also bacteria and parasites can cause inappropriately strong immune reactions.

TYPES OF ALLERGY
Allergic reactions are caused by substances in the environment known as allergens. Almost anything can be an allergen for someone. Allergens contain protein, which is a constituent of the food we eat. In fact it is an organic compound, containing nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen, which form an important part of living organism.

Allergy varies according to the compound that causes the immunological reaction. An allergic condition also often implies reaction against a combination of several substances. An allergic condition may periodically get better or worse according to the concentration of the allergen in the environment. A typical example is pollen allergy with peaks in the pollination season of grass or trees.

An allergic person will often get symptoms from several tissues in the body, but the symptoms are often most prominent at one body part and give very specific symptoms at that site. Broadly speaking, there are only three types of allergies, which affect us commonly. These include:

Food Allergies
Allergies to food can be mild, like a little tingling in the mouth, but for some people they may be severe, for example causing difficulty in breathing. Food allergies happen when a person’s immune system mistakenly diagnoses that something the person is eating is harmful for the body. The most common foods that cause allergies are wheat, soy, peanuts, milk, eggs, tree nuts, fish and shellfish. Symptoms of food allergies include swelling in the throat or other parts of the body, abdominal pain, eczema, dizziness, diarrhea or vomiting.

Contact allergies
This type of allergy is due to contact with chemicals and fumes, insect bites, allergic contact eczema, leather etc. Symptoms of contact allergy include redness, itchy, deep blisters, scaly patches and weepy skin.

Inhalant allergies
Inhalant allergy, also known as atopy is caused by allergic reactions to substances in the environment including pets, dust mites, outdoor air pollutants like pollens are the chief allergens. Formaldehydes, molds, occupational allergies etc fall under this category. Symptoms of inhalant allergy include inflammation, sputum secretion and contraction of respiratory system resulting insufficient breath.

ALLERGY TREATMENTS
Prevention works better than cure in respect of allergy. But when allergy becomes very acute, proper treatment should be meted out to overcome it. Allergy needs proper treatment and medical diagnosis. But most importantly, allergy which is caused due to dust and pollution can be treated by way of avoiding them. It is basically recommended to stay far away from those things which produce allergies

Before providing the basic treatment to the allergy patient, the root causes of allergy should be diagnosed correctly. For this purpose, a proper skin test and blood test should be conducted. Through this process the basic cause of allergy can be sorted out and on the basis of it the right treatment allergy could be processed. There are a lot of therapies which has been in practice for overcoming of allergy. Certain alternative medicines like herbal medication, ayurvedic medication, homeopathy and chinese medicines are helpful in treatment of various types of allergies. Besides these, there are also certain aromatic processes which also work wonders in the process of overcoming allergies.

Posted by admin On January - 29 - 2009

The illness is genetic so if one or both of your parents have diabetes then you should be especially vigilant to the symptoms. If you experience even the most minor symptoms then it is certainly advisable to visit your doctor since it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to disease. It’s important that diabetes is discovered early so it can be kept under control and give you the best chance of a long and healthy life.

As you are probably aware there are two types of diabetes, Type I and Type II and the the symptoms of these while similar can also differ. With Type I the onset of the disease is very rapid and the symptoms take hold very quick and as a result the sufferer may first be diagnosed in an urgent trip to the emergency ward. With Type II the symptoms appear more mildly although in some cases the signs may not appear early at all and they are only diagnosed in a crisis situation.

The initial symptoms of both types are similar and sufferers will experience increased fatigue, hunger, thirst and need to visit the toilet to urinate. With Type I, although the diabetic will have an inflated appetite they will most likely lose weight as well as having fits of nausea and sickness. As mentioned before, in some cases Type II sufferers will not experience any of the early symptoms of the disease but they may later have blurred vision, loss of feeling and pain and have wounds that do not heal properly.

So, if any of the above sounds familiar then the best thing you can do is pay a visit to your doctor to get checked out. He will test your blood glucose levels and may even let you borrow a home glucose test kit so you can monitor the levels yourself any time you want. You cannot prevent the onset of diabetes but by at least getting it diagnosed you can begin to control the effects of it.
