The Mayo Clinic Diet

Posted by admin On February - 29 - 2008

Mayo Clinic’s approach to weight loss – indeed the true Mayo Clinic Diet – is more than a diet. It’s a lifestyle that can help you maintain a healthy weight for a lifetime. If you’re overweight, you’ve likely tried many diet and weight-loss plans, from the low-carb diet to the low-fat approach. You might have even tried the Mayo Clinic Diet – or what you thought was the Mayo Clinic Diet.

But whatever the method, you may not have had much success and are still trying to lose weight. That’s not surprising. Most people who diet find weight loss a never-ending roller coaster ride.
That’s where Mayo Clinic’s weight management program can help you. This approach to weight loss isn’t a diet. It’s a lifestyle program that can improve your health and help you maintain a healthy weight for a lifetime.

Not just another diet, Mayo Clinic’s approach to weight loss – indeed the true Mayo Clinic Diet – is based on Mayo Clinic research and clinical experience. It recognizes
successful, long-term weight management needs to focus on more than the food you eat and the pounds you lose. It needs to focus on your overall health.
This Mayo Clinic Diet, if you want to call it that, has a simple goal – to help you adopt a long-term lifestyle that allows you to achieve and maintain a weight that’s healthy for you. The Mayo Clinic weight management program can be summarized in four essential components.

1. Eat well with the Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid

Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid

The Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid helps you adopt an enjoyable eating plan that you never tire of — one that can last a lifetime. That means no severe restrictions on the foods you eat and no extreme hunger. The base of the pyramid focuses on generous amounts of healthy foods that contain a small number of calories in a large volume of food, particularly fruits and vegetables. Healthy choices in moderate amounts make up the rest of the pyramid, which focuses on whole-grain carbohydrates, lean sources of protein such as legumes, fish and low-fat dairy, and heart-healthy unsaturated fats.
Use the pyramid to help you select the right kinds and amounts of food. If you eat the recommended number of servings, use the proper serving sizes and are physically active every day, the pyramid approach can help you lose weight at a safe pace of 1 to 2 pounds a week.

2. Increase your physical activity
Being active — either through physical activity or through a formal exercise program — is the next essential component of Mayo Clinic’s weight-control program. When you’re active, your body uses energy (calories) to work, helping to burn the calories you take in with food you eat.
At the most basic level, physical activity means moving — every motion of your body burns calories and is therefore beneficial. Cleaning the house, making the bed, shopping, mowing and gardening are all forms of physical activity. Exercise, on the other hand, is a structured and repetitive form of physical activity that you do on a regular basis. Exercise improves your fitness, as well as helps you lose weight and deal with everyday stress.

Whatever activity you choose, the key is to commit to doing it regularly. Aim for 30 to 60 minutes of moderately intense physical activity most days of the week. Moderately intense activity or exercise should increase your heart and breathing rates and possibly lead to a light sweat. Brisk walking and yardwork that entails near constant motion are examples of moderately intense activity. If you’ve been inactive or you have a medical condition, talk to your doctor or health care provider first. Most people can start out gradually with five- or 10-minute activity sessions and increase the time gradually.

3. Set action goals
Goal setting provides focus and the path to achieve a healthy lifestyle. With a clear goal, you can readily turn your thoughts into action.
When setting goals, focus on specific activities rather than pounds lost. For example, you might decrease the number of servings of high-fat foods in your diet and increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Or you might begin walking or jogging a specific number of miles each week. You might start keeping a daily food and activity diary. Make sure your goals are specific, measurable and realistic so that you’re able to reach them.
Set weekly or monthly goals, and then track your progress. At the end of the time, gauge your success by how well you’ve stuck to your plan rather than on how many pounds you may have lost, which of course is the ultimate goal.

4. Get started and stay motivated
Motivation is the final essential component of Mayo Clinic’s weight-control program. It’s natural to encounter mental roadblocks and resistance when you undertake a major lifestyle change. Once you’re ready to get started, here are some strategies to help bolster and sustain your motivation:

Emphasize the positives. Focus on the good things about losing weight — such as more energy and improved health — and not what you consider the negatives. If you have a setback, don’t dwell on it. Put it behind you and move forward toward your goal.
Prioritize. Don’t set yourself up for failure by trying to lose weight while distracted by other concerns.

Steer clear of dietary gimmicks. Over-the-counter pills and special food combinations aren’t the answer to long-term weight control. You want to incorporate healthy behaviors into your lifestyle, not rely on gimmicks.

Seek out support. Don’t feel you have to go it alone. Exercising with a friend or family member, for example, can help keep you motivated.

Remind yourself you’re not looking for a quick fix. Healthy weight loss is slow and steady weight loss that occurs over time. Remind yourself that quick weight loss is usually followed by weight regain a short time later.

Achieving a healthy weight takes continuous effort — or more correctly, good planning and consistency — but the rewards are clear: better health and more enjoyment from life. Over time, these steps will become a sustainable healthy lifestyle based on proper nutrition and increased physical activity. You’ll feel better immediately and reduce your health risks. More importantly, this change in lifestyle can be an enjoyable way for you to live.

Virginia Massage Therapy Schools

Posted by admin On February - 29 - 2008

If you live in or near the state of Virginia, and are considering massage therapy education, you will find a number of high quality Virginia massage therapy schools to choose from. Virginia massage therapy schools offer training in the well-recognized natural healing properties of massage therapy that encourage relaxation, relief, and recovery from injury and illness.

As a massage therapy student, you will gain expertise in massage techniques through extensive hands-on training under the supervision of your instructors. You’ll get the necessary knowledge and techniques that can lead to a diploma, certificate or massage therapy degree. You will prepare for national certification as a massage therapist, and build skills that will open doors of opportunity to provide massage therapy care and treatment to future clients.

Sometimes, massage therapy training will expose the student to additional areas of natural healing, like acupuncture or chiropractics, for example. Keep your options open, because advanced studies such as these can also lead to exceptional and rewarding health care careers.

Virginia massage therapy schools (and elsewhere) have the responsibility to request evaluation for accreditation of their school or massage therapy programs by state and national organizations recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. You will benefit greatly from choosing only accredited schools for your massage education. When it comes to passing certification examinations, gaining licensure, and finding a job after graduation, accredited Virginia massage therapy schools provide the better possibilities, while certificates and diplomas from non-accredited institution are not valued as highly.

The Virginia Board of Nursing has put forth a long list of regulations and certification requirements for massage therapists practicing in Virginia. City and county governments may have additional laws. You should check with all state and local governing bodies for laws that pertain to the practice of massage therapy before beginning your professional practice.

You can distance yourself from the 400,000 American deaths every year, related to cigarette smoking (according to the Center for Disease Control) by easing the following 7 simple steps into your lifestyle. And even if you don’t smoke cigarettes directly use this information to reduce your risk.

If you do smoke – until you quit smoking cigarettes, use these 7 easy steps, reduce your risk of being part of the 1 in 5 deaths in the United States related to cigarette smoking. To help support your health before and after you quit smoking.

Add just one or two of these easy lifestyle changes every week or two. In a short time you may find you’ve gone a long way to putting some good distance between you and the level of risk you lived with before.

——————————————————–

Increase your level of fitness:

A study of almost 26,000 men found those men who were active at the “competitive recreational level” had 55% less risk of dying from cancer as those men who were not fit. And the men engaged in moderate exercise, 20 to 40 minutes running, 3 to 5 times a week lowered their risk of dying from cancer by 38%.

(reported in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise 2002 May, 34(5):735-39)

——————————————————–

Increase you level of vitamin E intake:

An eight-year study in Finland, of more than 29,000 men who smoked, revealed that diets high in vitamin E foods can reduce the risk of lung cancer in smokers by about 20%. Those with the highest amounts of the natural form of vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) had 19% to 23% less lung cancer. More pronounced results were found in men under 60 years of age, who smoked less than 40 years. This group had 40% to 50% reduction in their risk of cancer. Nuts, whole grain foods and soybean oils are rich in vitamin E.

(findings published in Journal of the National Cancer Institute Vol. 91, No. 20)

——————————————————–

Selenium supplementation shown to lower incidence of lung and other cancers:

This 10-year study was originally to see if dietary supplementation of selenium would lower the occurrence of squamous cell skin cancers. In 1990 they included other common cancers, like lung, prostate and colorectal to the results of the study.

The study showed that total cancer rate was lower in the selenium group than the placebo group. Site-specific cancer rates were also significantly lower – almost 50% fewer cancers in the selenium-supplemented group oppose to the placebo group.

——————————————————–

Green and black tea shown to reduce risk of lung and other cancers:

Studies have shown that drinking green tea reduces the rate of lung cancer in mice by 45%. This may be why Japanese men have lower rates of lung cancer even though they smoke more than American men.

It was shown that drinking 5 cups of green tea daily, will reduce the occurrence of esophageal cancer by 20% in men who smoke and 50% in women who smoke. Of course the percentages were even greater in non-smokers. This was emphasized in the Journal for the National Cancer Institute where they said that “The more green tea you drink, the lower risk.”

Black tea’s secret weapon makes cancer cells commit suicide.

Black tea was found to have a compound, nick-named “TF-2″, and this compound, according to Dr. Kuang Yu Chen of Rutgers University, leaves normal cells unchanged while at the same time, “causes cancer cells to destroy themselves in huge numbers”.

——————————————————–

Carrots and tomato rich meals reduce the risk of lung cancer:

The Harvard School of Public Health analyzed more than 124,207 men and women over 10 years. The analysis indicated that those eating the highest amounts of alpha-carotene and lycopene, reduced their risk of lung cancer by 20% – 25%.

Of course we’ve all seen recent reports that tomato products help reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

One of the studies lead researchers said that lycopene is an important carotenoid for protection against lung cancer especially in current smokers.

The director of the Center for Human Nutrition at University of California said that, six ounces of tomato-based vegetable juice or an eight-ounce serving of tomato soup has been shown to help raise blood levels of lycopene.

——————————————————–

Grapes hold promise of killing cancer cells:

At the School of Pharmacy, De Montfort University, in England, researchers reported the compound “resveratrol” is converted in the body to a known anti-cancer agent that selectively targets and destroys cancer cells.

Also according the results of a study published in “Free Radical Research”, while resveratrol, vitamin E and a synthetic antioxidant were all very good at eliminating free radicals, it was the resveratrol that came out on top against certain types of the free radicals.

Resveratrol, which is primarily found in the skin of the grape, has also been found to work on a wide range of cancers, both to prevent and treat existing cancers. It is able to distinguish a cancer cell from a normal cell and actually seems to protect the normal cell. It has been shown to do more than simply scavenge free radicals – which are themselves major causes of cancers.

——————————————————–

Vitamin C:

Studies have shown that a diet rich in plants is associated with increase health overall and a reduced risk of certain cancers. According to Dr. Gladys Block of the University of California, Berkeley, and her colleagues, new findings suggest that it is by raising vitamin C levels, that fruit and vegetable consumption provides their protective benefits.

According to the researchers, smoking lowers blood levels of certain nutrients, while supplements will increase those levels. So increasing supplements may provide that protection from cancers.

The sport took a lot of their time and dedication.

However, they could not just hang around working with various weights in the gym for an hour and forty minutes, there were strict guidelines provided by the coach shifting the weight training exercises around a bit.

Some days, athletic coaches will assign their players to work his or her entire upper-body, and the next day work exclusively on the lower-body. Most coaches who require weight training have their own agenda when it comes to weight training for their players. By the same token, this is why dance instructors will ask their students to practice between classes.

Forms of Honey

Posted by admin On February - 28 - 2008

Honey comes in a number of physical forms, and understanding the variety will certainly help you pick a more appropriate form from the supermarket when you wish to combine honey with other ingredients used in the preparation of foods. Try out the various forms of honey when you have the chance!

1. Comb Honey:

It is difficult to find comb honey nowadays, but sometimes you can find a jar of liquid honey to which a piece of cut comb has been added. Before the invention of honey extracting device, honey is mostly produced in the form of comb honey. Today, very little honey is produced as comb honey.
Comb honey is raw pure honey sections taken straight from the hive – honey bees’ wax comb. It is the most unprocessed form in which honey comes — the bees fill the hexagon shaped wax cells of the comb with honey and cap it with beeswax. You can eat comb honey just like a chewy candy. Because the honey in the comb is untouched and is deemed to be pure, honey presented in this form comes with a high price tag.

2. Liquid honey:

I easily find this honey everywhere. When I travel abroad, I notice that most countries seem to have no lack of it. Liquid honey has been filtered to remove to remove fine particles, pollen grains, and air bubbles, and heated to melt visible crystals after being extracted from the honey comb by centrifugal force or gravity. Because liquid honey mixes easily into a variety of foods, its uses are diverse. It is used as a syrup for pancakes and waffles and in a wide variety of recipes, and it’s especially convenient for cooking and baking.

3. Cream honey:

If you are one of those who complain that honey is messy to use, cream honey would be an excellent alternative to liquid honey. Cream honey, also known as whipped honey, spun honey, granulated honey, or honey fondant, is found in the market in a crystallised state. It has one part finely granulated honey blended with nine parts liquid honey. The crystallisation is controlled in such a way that at room temperature, the honey has a smooth consistency and can be spread like butter.

Mint Herbal Remedy – More Than Just A Breath Freshener

Posted by admin On February - 27 - 2008

Mint can be used as a herbal remedy for different ailments. You probably equate mint to the flavoring used in toothpaste or your chewing gum. However, mint can be used more extensively than just as a breath freshener or even as a flavoring for your cooking.

The aerial parts of the mint herb are the parts that are most used to make herbal remedies. Ailments generally include digestive disorders, colic and fatulence. Additionally, mint is often used to treat motion sickness and nausea. If you are suffering from flu or fever, mint can be used to help promote sweating to break the illness. Mint is also called bo he in Chinese herbal medicine and it used to help relieve the symptoms of liver stagnation or other digestive complaints. A mint herbal remedy is best used right after harvesting.

You can also use the mint plant’s aerial parts to prepare an inhalation, tincture, compress, or an infusion, depending upon your needs. A hot tea can be made as well and this is the easiest way to ingest mint.

An essential oil is one of the most common ways to derive benefits from mint. Peppermint oil is very popular and it contains large amounts of menthol. Peppermint oil is known for its analgesic, calming, and cooling affect on your body. This is a good remedy for treating and relieving headaches, migraines, treating fevers, and treating skin problems. This oil is considered antibacterial in nature as well, which is great for using on minor infections.

Inhaling peppermint oil can help relieve severe nasal congestion, but you do not need to do this often, because it may irritate your mucous membranes. Young children should not use peppermint oil and nursing mothers should stay away from peppermint oil, because it can reduce your milk flow.

With thirty different varieties of mint, there can be a lot of herbal remedies that can be prepared out of them. Peppermint is the preferred mint herbal remedy in the western world. In China, it is the field mint. Garden mint, or spearmint, is another very popular mint herbal remedy, more commonly used for children.

In cooking, mint can be used as flavoring for a distinctive taste. It is also used widely in desserts such as in mint chocolates. The mint that I’m most familiar with in Asian cooking used in laksa and malay cooking is called laksa leaves. It is also a commonly used ingredient in Vietnamese salads and soups. However, what is interesting to note though that this mint ingredient does not actually belong to the mint family although its general appearance and odor are reminiscent.

Stop Snoring Remedy

Posted by admin On February - 27 - 2008

The stop snoring remedy is sought by many households.
It’s no laughing matter.
Although is a rich source of material for comedy writers, someone who is disturbed by a snorer every night will most certainly *not* be laughing.

Snoring can also be the sign of more serious health problems for the snorer, so seeking that stop snoring remedy is serious business.
It’s also big business, with a seemingly endless supply of gadgets, pills and lotions claiming to cure the problem.
Often the remedy can be found naturally, and if we look at 4 main causes of snoring we can find the remedy to stop it!

Firstly there is sleeping on your back. This allows the mouth/throat tissue and tongue to fall down into the throat and block the airway. Granny’s old method of putting a walnut in a sock and pinning it to the back of your pyjamas may seem crude, but it can be surprisingly effective at stopping you sleeping on your back, and therefore stopping your snoring – that might be all you need!
There are also exercises to strengthen your tongue and throat muscles to alleviate the same problem.

Speaking of exercise, another main cause of snoring is being overweight, as the excess fat around the neck restricts the airway.
It often doesn’t take much loss of weight to make a big difference here, a simple waking regime may be enough.
Exercise of course is good for your health all round, never mind as a remedy to stop snoring!

If you drink alcohol before sleep, the relaxant nature of it will cause the muscles in the throat to relax, leading to… you guessed it, blocked airways!
