It has a butterfly shape and the winged portion of its shape, called lobes, wrap around each side of the trachea. Each lobe is then joined together by a narrow band of thyroid tissue, called the isthmus. The thyroid gland, although being the largest gland in the neck, is also one of smallest glands in the body, weighing less than one ounce. The exact function of the thyroid gland is to take iodine, which is found in many foods, and convert it into thyroid hormone. The two thyroid hormones produced are Thryoxine (T4), and triiodothyronine (T3). Thyroid cells are the only cells in the body that can absorb iodine. They combine with the amino acid Tyrosine to make T3 and T4. Then they are released into the bloodstream where they are transported throughout the body to control metabolism. The thyroid cells are crucial in the function of the body, because every cell depends on thyroid cells for regulation of metabolism.
Disorders of the thyroid are very common in today’s society. There are four basic categories where you will find thyroid gland problems:
Hormone production (too much or too little: hyperthyroidism, and hypothyroidism)
Problems due to increase growth of the thyroid gland in the neck
Causing the compression of important structures in the neck.
The formation of nodules or lumps within the thyroid (masses)
Cancer of the thyroid gland
When hormones regulate our metabolism, they are regulating many things, such as how many calories we burn, how warm we feel, and how much we weigh. It also has a direct affect on body organs such as the heart, which beats faster and harder under the influence of hormones. In a healthy person, the thyroid gland makes just the right amount of T3 and T4 that the body needs to regulate metabolism. Hyperthyroidism is a condition which results from the over activity of the thyroid gland, meaning that the thyroid gland is producing an excess of hormones. Cheekbones, narrowness of jaws, the position of teeth and the formation of the hard palate make the taking of accurate x-ray pictures a challenge.
For these reasons x-ray pictures of teeth and jaws quite often fail to disclose the presence of infection or what kind of treatment might be required, contrary to generally accepted views of most dentists and patients.
Cracks in teeth are almost never visible on x-ray pictures.
The extent of bone loss around a tooth, though felt to indicate the severity of its infection, does not do so. Doctors Basker and Stern, in separate studies, reported that 85 to 100 percent of dental granulomas and redicular cysts do not contain bacteria. This does not mean the tooth itself is not infected.
When the dentist removes or treats a tooth but the patients continues to have a toothache, it may seem the wrong tooth was removed. The pictures in this chapter show how a second tooth is often involved.
Because lateral canals can contain infection, dentists have been taught to advise root filled teeth be x-rayed each year or two.
None of this implies the use of x-ray pictures is to no avail. Quite the contrary, good x-ray pictures often disclose disease conditions which should receive immediate attention if the patient’s health is not to be jeopardized.
Both pointed out that the visual areas of abnormalities on x-ray pictures are not necessarily areas of infection harboring bacteria. Dr. Stern stated that, for the most part, such visible areas are lisions that have been identified as radicular cysts and granulomas.
The granulomas are reactive lesions caused by bacterial destruction originating from an infeced root canal that opens into that area. Experiments indicate the granuloma is a response of cells to the bacteria in the root canal, but, at the same time, bacteria cultures taken from the areas of lost bone at the root end of the tooth have proven negative 85 to 100 percent of the time.
These studies are yet another substantiation of discoveries made by Dr. Price in this regard some 45 years previous to the publication of the Baskar and Stern articles.
These are numerous other types of pathologic conditions which challenge the diagnostic ability of dentists. Some of these conditions are misinterpreted as tooth infections,but as descriptions of them would require complicated explanations that are not germane to the purposes of this book, I mention them only to further indicate the number of difficulties inherent in the use of dental x-ray pictures in the interpretation of dental pathology.

Most of us had friends who didn’t hesitate to indulge in the daily festivals or invite us to some of theirs. The eat, drink, and be merry crowd was alive and kicking.
Now, looking back on it the only thing that we should be kicking is our own butts. We turned ourselves into human storage facilities not so much unlike those places we use when we are moving and need to put our big old furniture somewhere. The only difference is those places store a host of things and we only store one thing, namely fat.
Fats a good word and a good thing when you are stranded on the side of MT. Everest for a week after getting separated from the expedition party. Most of us are not really going to be involved in any thing of that nature so it would be safe to say we really don’t need an abundance of fat. We need just enough to pad those internal vital organs and a few other essential needs that arrive.
I remember a few of my signals ,tell me if they are recognizable in your memories, for one I noticed my pants starting to fit just a little bit snug so what I started doing was unfastening the top button and letting my belt hold them up. This worked out good and gave my stomach some breathing room. Another thing was after the belt started becoming too small to do this I had to go up a size in them. This again worked for awhile ,then that size started getting to small and I had to repeat the belt move (with a larger belt I might add) and this worked great. All was good in the land until history repeated itself and I had to start a new process over again. This involved bigger belt and larger pants size.
I remember shopping in the store one day and saying to my self, these designers are ripping people off because I know for a fact they are not making these pants sizes what they should be. I know these size 40 pants are really 38. These shirts say xxl but I know for a fact these are xl. The thought that I had actually went from a size 34 to size 40 was too ridiculous for my mind to process
I kind of notice I might had put on a smidgen of weight but I knew it was maybe because the medicine I was taking was making me hold a little extra water and that was the culprit to my beginning– to– expand circumstance. I also told myself that the tiny bit of weight I was putting on would not be hard at all to burn off with a couple of jumping jacks here and there. It was getting a little too hard to be jumping around without any real purpose though so that idea went by the wayside.
One day I took that look in the mirror again-you know that Am I actually a fat boy now –look-and the mirror looked at me right in the eyes and said yes you are. You are actually a fat boy that wears xxl shirts and size 40 pants.
That’s when something, lets call it shame for the heck of it, came into my mind and said I had better do something now to reverse this trend . Weight loss I’m on my way.
I started researching mountains of information to learn how to get in shape. I started cross checking information and throwing out the diet myths that were destroyed and I listed anything that appeared the same in my entire research field. I had one concern that hovered over my spirit and that was I didn’t want to embark on a plan that I couldn’t do for life. I didn’t want to deny myself my favorite love-to-eat foods and I didn’t want to exercise until I got very dizzy and passed out. I needed something where I could still eat my favorite foods and still exercise without busting blood vessels. After trial and error and more research coupled with trial and error I finally had my plan.
I put my plan into use and went from a 260 pound Mt-Everest –stranded–fat–needed guy to a guy who resembles the guy in my college yearbook of 20 years age. At 205 and 6’1 I look and feel a lot better. In fact after I get though writing this I’m going to have some chocolate ice-cream. THE FIRST STEP IS CLOSER THAN THE LAST SO IT IS THE EASIEST THING WE JUST MAKE IT HARD
Some of the older treatments for depression include medications in particular classes of medications and medical procedures. MAOIs (monomine oxidase inhibitors) usually have not been the first course of treatment because they reduce the benefits of other medications, and particular foods need to be avoided.
Trycyclics are rarely used because of very serious side effects and have been basically replaced by SSRIs -serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors and these also are not the first choice of treatment. They do have fewer side effects and are well tolerated for the most part. Newer doses are lower which allows for less intolerance.
There are newer classes of medications such as Atypical Cyclics such as Wellbutrin. SSNRIs – Selective serotonin and noradrenergic Reuptake Inhibitors such as Effexor are also new.
The drug Serzone is a SSRIs – serotonin reuptake inhibitor and a receptor antagonist.
Newer classes of medication include Eugeric drugs and are stimulants that enhance the quality of noradrenaline. There are no highs and lows and it stimulates the person and provides a heightened sense of well-being.
There is a current trend to use other anti-depressive medications to give a boost to the primary prescribed drug. One anti-depressant may be working, but not as good as it should. This is where the booster medications come into play.
Another new class of drugs is NARDs – Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors. Depression in the elderly is improved with these drugs. Roboxotine is more effective with few if any side effects.
Another treatment while not new is herbal treatments. They actually have been around for centuries having been used by ancient tribes and Shaman. Many people turn to herbal supplements because of the few side effects. There are a few precautions that you should take note of. Herbal supplements may have negative interactions with other foods. It may also cause prescriptive medicines to be less effective. If you have any such experiences, the FDA should be contacted immediately.
Depression is difficult to deal with but it is very treatable and it can be done naturally. Check with your doctor to be certain this is an appropriate course of action for your needs.
