Heartburn – Do You Suffer From Heartburn And Why

Posted by admin On September - 30 - 2007

If you are a sufferer of heartburn like myself, and most everybody at some stage in their lifetime will be, will know just how excruciatingly painful it can be. Heartburn is a symptom of Gastro-esophageal reflux or Gurd and is the bane of many peoples lives. Did you know that heartburn is caused when acidic juices from the stomach are able to flow back into the esophagus, and because of this we get the burning sensation we feel in the middle of our chest which is a result of the esophagus becoming irritated – ie heartburn.

Heartburn can be brought on by many factors, and as today we live such full, fast paced lives this is thought to exacerbate the problem. The cause of heartburn is when the valve between the esophagus and the stomach -which allows food material to be passed into the stomach and should prevent it from coming back up – does not always work. Some unfortunate people are born with a weak valve.

There are links to heartburn with being overweight, eating too many spicy or fatty foods, smoking and eating too late. So we should try to curb some of these trends to help reduce the problem. Studies have shown that 41 per cent of adults had suffered from reflux symptoms within the past six months, and many experiencing symptoms (15-20 per cent) on a weekly basis with a few suffering daily. These studies also suggested that the incidence of heartburn has increased five fold in the past 25 years, making it one of the fastest health growing problems.
There has not been one particular reason singled out as to just why such a big increase has been recorded, but modern lifestyles and diets are thought to be the forefront culprit. For us over thirty, our eating habits have changed dramatically during the past 25 years, especially with the introduction of fast foods. These foods are often cooked by deep fat frying and are saturated in fats, which ensues many health problems.

Also many people now no longer eat the amount of vegetables as regularly as we once did, this is often because we are not growing our own vegetables as modern housing does not allow enough space for gardens and with allotments areas being built upon.

A healthy diet and regular exercise is essential for everybody and even more so us heartburn sufferers, so always try to maintain this as best as you can, and we are told to keep rich indulgent food being to a minimum or a treat once in a while, but is this the truth. Some people think otherwise. I recently downloaded an audio book by Don Smith called The Heartburn Cure and published by DJ Publishing, which has helped answer many questions I had. Books like this are informative in many ways, from looking at how changing environments, to stress management, even our attitude can have an effect on our heartburn, and other factors I really had not given a thought to!

Also making sure we are taking the correct ‘over the counter’ product for ourselves, and helping to find natural foods and ingredients that can do the same is good news. Anything that is natural and harmless and can give relief from the pain of heartburn is of interest to me, and no doubt you too.

When we first got involved in health and fitness there were only paper books available to read on these subjects. This meant that normally we only had time to read in the evenings after getting back from work. Although while traveling to and from work so much time seemed to be wasted, as you can not drive and read at the same time. Then in the last few years audio download sites started to appear. We were so impressed with all the ‘talking’ books you could download. So now we can download any books and listen to them anytime we have time on our hands even when driving.

Supplements For Clear Looking Skin in 30 Days

Posted by admin On September - 30 - 2007

With busy lifestyle and poor diet choices the norm nowadays, our body may lack the necessary nutrients to keep our skin in optimal condition. In such circumstances, it may be worth adding supplementary nutrients to enhance our internal system inadequacies.

Indeed, before resorting to more expensive supplements like collagen and laser treatment to achieve clear looking skin, you should consider opting for vital minerals like the followings:

Multivitamin and mineralsBioflavonoidsGreen tea extracts and other antioxidant blendsEssential fatty acids like linseed and evening primrose oilMSM (Methy sulfonyl methane) Your ideal supplement intake will depend on your health status, environment you are in and the budget you can afford. However, when it comes to choosing supplements, it is more important to look at the quality of the supplement rather than price alone.

Cheapest brands of supplement normally have poorer quality of binders and fillers. The nutrients contain in such brands are usually less absorbent. They may also contain preservatives colorings and sweeteners which is not recommended for optimum nutrition. If in doubt, read the labels and seek your physician advice before consuming the supplement.

If you have problems sleeping at night after taking the supplements, you may want to investigate further. Some supplements like Vitamin B have reportedly cause sleeping difficulty in some people.

As a guide, do not take minerals or individual B vitamins in isolation. As nutrients work together to release the much needed nutrients into your body, it is recommended to opt for multi-vitamins instead. Most supplements would take several weeks before you can feel the results. However, do remember that supplements are just an additional help for good skin health. You should not neglect your daily meals and depend on supplements only.

Factors That Make Acne Worst

Posted by admin On September - 30 - 2007

Genetics Factors

Genetics factors play a significant role in acne formation, although we do not know which genes exactly are involved. It is likely that combination of genes from both parents are responsible.

It is common to see that several members in the same family have acne. If one or both parents have severe acne, then the child is also at risk of developing severe acne.

Picking and Squeezing

It is common to see that acne sufferers pick at the acne lesions and squeeze out the retained sebaceous deposits. And it is a common mistaken impression that this will unblock the pore and speed up healing. In fact, the squeezing cause unnecessary damage to the skin, bacteria is introduced to the wound and causes inflammation. The result is often darker, deeper and more permanent scars.

Stress

Acne get worse when the person suffers from stress, worry, tension and anxiety. For example, it has been observe that during examination period, the acne condition get worse for student suffers. This is likely cause by hormones and neuroactive substances produced during stress and significantly influence on acne formation.

Premenstrual Flares

Some women complain of acne flares just before their menses. And these premenstrual flares affect up to 40% of women with acne. It is likely due to the hormone fluctuation over the menstrual cycle. The flares often resolve quickly after the menses end.

Creams and Medicaments

Certains creams and medicaments may make acne worse. Topical steroids which is often prescribed for treating eczema may resulted to outbreak of acne is they are used excessively and inappropriately. You can identify this type of acne by its look – multiple red, inflamed monomorphic papules and pustules.

Drugs

Some drugs aggravate or even cause acne. These include:

- corticosteroids which is taken orally or by injections

- lithium for treating manic depressive illness

- testosterone pills and injection which are used by professional athletes and body builders to increase muscle mass

- danazol which is given to women for endometriosis which is the growth of tissue from the uterus in parts of the body other than the uterus

Cosmetics

For a small group of cosmetics users, they can develop cosmetic acne in the form of side effect. Cosmetic acne is usually present as small, raised whiteheads or small inflamed paules and pustules over the face the cosmetics are applied. Often, women with cosmetic acne are caught in a vicious cycle – the more acne outbreak they have, the more cosmetics up they use to cover it up which only leads to worsening of the condition.

Climate

Acne tends to get worse in hot humid climates and work environment e.g. steam rooms and kitchen. We do not know why heat and humidity have such an aggravating effect but we know is that the outer layer of skin swells tremendously under humid conditions. The pressure from the swelling could block the opening of the pilo-sebaceous unit and cause acne to develop.

Occupations

Jobs that involve with certain chemicals may worsen acne. These chemicals include:

- insoluble cutting oils that are use in engineering manufacturing industries

- crude petroleum in the oil refining industry

- diesel oil that is used in motor mechanics

- halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons that are use in industries manufacturing conductors and insulators and

- insecticides, fungicides and herbicides

Beryllium

Posted by admin On September - 30 - 2007

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) have determined that beryllium is a human carcinogen. The EPA has determined that beryllium is a probable human carcinogen. EPA has estimated that lifetime exposure to 0.04 µg/m³ beryllium can result in a one in a thousand chance of developing cancer.

While solid beryllium is not harmful, the dust created as result of working with beryllium metal, metal oxides, alloys, ceramics, or salts can be deadly. If ingested into the lungs the dust can cause scarring leading to beryllium disease and lung cancer. Beryllium disease is. An estimated 2-6% of workers exposed to beryllium eventually develop beryllium disease and up to one third will die as a result. Once exposed to beryllium there is a lifelong risk of developing Acute Beryllium Disease (ABD). It usually has a quick onset and resembles pneumonia or bronchitis.

One to fifteen percent of all workers occupationally exposed to beryllium dust develop Chronic Beryllium Disease (CBD), a painful incurable lung disease. Symptoms of Chronic Beryllium Disease, also known as berylliosis, include breathing difficulties, chest pain, coughing, and general weakness. While the average latency period is about eight to ten years, Chronic Beryllium Disease can develop as late as thirty years after last exposure. CBD in some people progresses slowly, but in others much more rapidly.

Chronic Beryllium Disease
Chronic beryllium disease was first described in 1946. Symptoms usually include:

• labored breathing • shortness of breath • cough • fever • anorexia • weight loss

Other effects that have been observed in individuals with severe cases of chronic beryllium disease include damage to the right heart ventricle, hepatic necrosis, kidney stones, granulomatous hepatitis and hypercalcemia.

Skin lesions are the most common external indicators of chronic beryllium disease. and kidney stones can also occur.
Chronic beryllium disease will continue to progress if left untreated. While there is no cure for chronic beryllium disease, it can be treated. The disease does not progress in all patients. If it does, some patients’ disease progresses faster than others. While some die within a few years of diagnosis, others experience a downhill course extending over decades.

Diagnosing Chronic Beryllium Disease

Chest X-rays and blood tests known as the beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test, are used to diagnose chronic beryllium disease.

Acute Beryllium Disease

Symptoms of acute beryllium disease include shortness of breath, chest pain, cough and acrocyanosis. Two types of the acute disease have been identified. The “fulminating” or rapid type develops within three days of an exposure to high concentrations of beryllium particles.

Beryllium (atomic number 4) discovered in 1797 by French chemist Louis Nicolas Vauquelin (1763-1829), is a naturally occurring metallic element found in rocks, coal, oil, volcanic dust and even the soil in your backyard. Beryllium gets its name from the mineral beryl in which it can be found.

Beryllium’s physical and mechanical properties are unmatched by any other metal. Beryllium is non-magnetic, lightweight, hard, and can withstand extreme heat, remain stable over a wide range of temperatures, allowing it to function as an excellent thermal conductor. These attributes make beryllium a unique material suitable for a host of modern demanding industrial applications. For many important industries, beryllium is the only suitable material for the job.

A brief list of products dependent on beryllium or a combination of beryllium and copper would include:

• Battery contacts
• Electronic connections
• Cell phones and base stations
• Underwater fiber optic cable
• Air bag sensors
• Power steering
• Fire extinguishers
• Sprinkler heads
• Pacemakers
• Lasers for blood testing
• High resolution x-rays
• Mammography equipment
• Infrared countermeasure systems
• Radar navigation systems
• Surveillance satellites, and
• Aircraft landing gear components.
• Microprocessor connectors
• Ultra-high speed optical laser
• Airport luggage handling
• Apache helicopters
• Fighter aircraft
• Tanks
• Nuclear weapons
• Dental work
• Bicycle frames
• Tools
• Dyes

Reacting to many cases of what was known as “chemical pneumonia”, OSHA adopted community ambient air standards in 1949 for beryllium that remain intact today. The EPA classifies beryllium dust and fumes as toxic air pollutants.

Approximately 800,000 workers in the United States work with and around beryllium. The industries in which beryllium can be found include:

•Electronics (transistors, heat sinks, x-ray windows)
•Atomic energy (heat shields, nuclear reactors, nuclear weapons)
•Laboratory work (research and development, metallurgy, chemistry)
•Metal working (pure beryllium, copper and aluminum alloys, jet brake pads, aerospace components)
•Ceramic manufacturing (semi-conductor chips, ignition modules, crucibles, jet engine blades, rocket covers)
•Extraction (Smelting and refining of ore and scrap metal)

•Dental work (alloys and crowns, bridges, dental plates)
•X-ray tube manufacturing
•Plastic molding
•Precision machining
•Rocket parts and heat shields

If you have been exposed to beryllium and have any symptoms consult your physician immediately.

You may also have damages recoverable in a lawsuit. Consult an attorney experienced in beryllium litigation.

I Need To Know Can Diet Control Crohn’s Disease

Posted by admin On September - 29 - 2007

For those patients who suffer with the chronic condition of Crohn’s disease is vital to consider all treatment options when trying to manage this often life-altering disease.

An often asked question is can diet control Crohn’s disease? When you have a condition that can so negatively impact your daily life, believe me, you will look at all the options, including diet that might possibly help to control your condition and give you your life back.

So it really is a great question. Can diet control Crohn’s disease? It seems the jury is still out on that question.

While there are some great dietary guidelines for a Crohn’s disease diet such as avoiding raw or fried foods, adding a lean proteins and eliminating any foods to which you seem to have a sensitivity, there seems to be absolutely no hard and fast rules when it comes to trying to determine if a diet can actually control or at least reduce the symptoms of Crohn’s disease.

At this time there has been no particular diet that has shown itself to be effective for the prevention of or treatment of Crohn’s disease. A frustrating situation indeed.

While it is important to eat a healthy diet as instructed by your health care provider, you must also determine for yourself which foods are triggers for you and seem to worsen your symptoms.

There are many patients who seem to have an increase in symptoms when taking in too much fiber, the ingestion of milk and milk products, the consumption of alcohol, and even the intake of spicy foods.

So eating a healthy diet, one free from symptom producing triggers, and one that can help to address any nutritional deficiencies and symptoms of dehydration that you may be experiencing is really the most important dietary tale of all.

It seems it would be much easier if there were a definitive diet for Crohn’s disease that patients could follow; however, unfortunately, at this time it does not seem on the near horizon.

Can a diet control Crohn’s disease?

It is definitely the wish of many and something we can only hope that researchers are studying even at this present time.

Pelton Crane Sterilizer – Fix It Yourself

Posted by admin On September - 29 - 2007

If your Pelton Crane Sterlizer is not heating like it should, the problem may be one that you can fix yourself. Diagnosing & repairing it is not as complex as you might think.

But first, a basic understanding of what it does is in order: You turn the knob to fill until the water reaches a predetermined level. You place the instruments inside and turn it to sterilize. The Electric Heating elements (3 of them) heat the water in the chamber past the boiling point (212 degrees) turning the water into steam.

The chamber is airtight so when the water turns from solid to gas, the entire chamber is filled with steam and pressure begins to build. By turning itself off and on, the sterilizer maintains the temperature, which in turn keeps the pressure at the desired level. This combination over a period of time (the cycle) kills all living organisms and effectively sterilizes what ever is in the chamber.

The most common problem causing the loss of heat is a heating element going out. You can test to see if this is the problem with any kind of ohmmeter. Unplug the unit before going any further and leave it unplugged.

Remove the cabinet by removing the screws from the bottom of the sides and the back. Once the screws are removed, lift the back of the cabinet slightly and push it forward (there is a small lip in the front that is about ½ inch wide). Once the lip is cleared, just lift the cabinet off and set it aside. You will want to remove the insulation surrounding the chamber. Just lift it off and set it inside of the cabinet so it is out of the way.

Now, check all the wires around the controls and chamber to make sure none of them have broken. Located on the front of the chamber towards the bottom is the temperature-limiting switch. You will notice wires under the screws on the top of the over temperature switch. With the ohmmeter set to read ohms, place one lead on one screw head and the second lead on the other screw head. If the needle on the ohmmeter stays to the left (doesn’t move) that means the reading is infinity. There is a dead short and the over temperature switch will have to be replaced.

The next and most common problem is the heating elements. To check these out will require a little more work, but is not difficult. The three heating elements are positioned on the bottom of the chamber so there is one close to you, one on the bottom (referred to as the center element) and one on the side away from you.

Each of these heating elements has a screw attached at each end with wires attached. Place a lead from the ohmmeter on each end. If the meter stays in the infinity position as described above, there is a dead short and the element will have to be replaced. The center element is the most common to go out, but check all 3.

If the heating elements are okay, but the temperature-limiting switch is bad, you can replace the switch alone. But if you are replacing a heating element, the switch should be replaced at the same time.

We would be happy to supply you with any replacement parts you might need along with detailed installation instructions. Included with the heating elements is 3 feet of high temperature wire so you can replace all the wiring involved in this procedure. Aromatherapy Massage-The Right Oils For The Job

Posted by admin On September - 29 - 2007

Over the last few years Aromatherapy has become the it word but many people ask what does it actually mean. Well Aromatherapy is the use of liquid plant material to provide a beneficial effect on a persons mood or health.

The beneficial effects of the natural essential oils are released by the use of gentle heat and in Aromatherapy the fragrance oils from various different plants such as Sandalwood are burned to release their active properties, whilst such oils as sesame are rubbed into the body so that its heat helps to release these oils properties or they may be used in other ways.

You will often find that aromatherapy is used in conjunction with massage therapy and because its natural you will often find that a health professional or masseuse will choose to combine these two therapies together because of their benefits when used alongside one and other.

Massage therapy is the kneading or placing of pressure on different areas of the body in order to help relieve the tension the patient is feeling and during this process there are different kinds of massage lotions or aromatic oils which will be used. Whilst these lotions may help to soften a skin (just one benefit) they also provide the masseuse or health professional treating the client with lubrication will allows deeper lying tissue in the body to be treated.

Massage can not only relax a person but it can stimulate them as well and it all depends on what kind of massage is being used. With the use of aromatherapy alongside the massage it enhances the relaxation that the person will feel and as you will soon find that just as massage helps to relieve stress and tension that you feel, the essential oils used in aromatherapy will increase the effects that the person is feeling.

Nowadays you will find that many Spas and Salons offer their clients aromatherapy treatments along with massage or other beneficial treatments that they provide. Often you will soon find that aromatherapy helps to enhance the benefits of a stimulated massage by increasing the blood circulation around the body and improving a persons breathing. Many Spas and Bio-medical centres now offer those clients with circulatory or respiratory problems a stimulating massage.

What Are Triglycerides? Don’t Let Them Stop Your Heart

Posted by admin On September - 28 - 2007

In your body there are different types of fat. One of these types is Triglycerides. Triglycerides are the most common type of fat in your body. They are also found in your blood.

When we eat, our bodies burns the calories we need as energy required to perform any activity. Normally, we eat much more calories than what we burn. These extra calories we didn’t burn during the day are turned into Triglycerides and stored to be used later, being stored as fat in our bodies. It doesn’t matter what kind of food we eat –carbohydrate, protein or fat. If we eat more calories than we burn we develop Triglycerides, and if that excess of calories is elevated, the level of Triglycerides might be high as well.

Triglycerides are important for a good health, in normal amounts of course. The reason is that they are a major source of energy. But when our level of Triglycerides is high, it increases the risk of heart disease.

The excess of Triglycerides in blood (called hypertriglyceridemia) is linked to cases of coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, pancreatitis and stroke.

One of the reasons for a high level of Triglycerides is an unattended diabetes; and as other health conditions like cholesterol, our level of Triglycerides can be detected with a plasma test (blood test).
Normal Triglycerides levels need to be below 150, being a measure of 200 considered high.

How To Reduce Triglyceride Levels

Some easy ways to lower the level of Triglycerides in or body are a good cardiovascular exercise routine and a diet with moderated carbohydrate intake which include essential fatty acids. The reduction of alcohol intake helps a lot, and the use of fish oil and niacin have reported good results in reducing levels of Triglycerides too.

The point is that lowering our level of Triglycerides is not that difficult. One of the easiest ways, as we see before, is to start burning more calories than we eat; or eating less calories than we could burn during the day. There are many publications with useful techniques that show you many ways to do it. Simply start eating healthier foods and start an easy and moderated cardiovascular exercise routine. You’ll realized that exercising a bit is not that difficult. You’ll start feeling better and look better which will be a motivation to keep doing it until you get to a point where if you miss one day of exercise you’ll feel that something is missing. Just do it! You’ve got nothing to lose and a new life to gain.

Why You Should Consider A Sunless Tanning Lotion

Posted by admin On September - 28 - 2007

Why should you consider a sunless tanning lotion over natural tanning? I like to look good and get a tan, but tanning in the sun can certainly speed up the aging process as well as other health problems. Sunless tanning lotions are quickly growing in popularity and doctors are happy about it. By using a sunless tanning lotion you can avoid the skin cancer risk that comes from the sun’s UV rays. You will also avoid the aging effects of the sun because you will, once again, be avoiding the UV rays that accelerate the onset of wrinkles and other signs of aging.

Sunless tanning lotions are a little time consuming to apply, but they are very easy to use. A tan from these tanning products will generally last for a week and a half before you have to reapply to maintain the tanned look. Initially this may seem like a lot of trouble to go to for a “fake” tan, but you should consider how much you are protecting the health of your skin by avoiding extended exposure to UV rays. Tanning lotions are a great way to keep the tan you love without risking sun damage to your skin.

In the past, sunless tanning lotions were a little splotchy and tended to give the skin a bit of an orange tinge. However, if you haven’t checked out a tanning lotion lately you are probably not aware of all the improvement. Now, these sunless tanning lotions give a natural tan that will peak around 24 hours after application to the skin.

Another benefit of sunless tanning is for those who cannot tan in the sun for various reasons. Perhaps you have really fair skin, freckles, or very light hair that make natural tanning a bit of a problem. Also, if you have a family history of skin cancer, your doctor may have advised you to avoid tanning. With a sunless tanning lotion, you will be able to get that tanned look without risking your skin’s health.

You can also use a sunless tanning lotion with your traditional tan. If you like to go to the tanning bed or lay out at the beach on occasion, then use the tanning lotion to cut back a little. You can use the sunless tanning lotions to help maintain your tan and lengthen the times between trips to the bed or the beach with limited protection. You will have the look you want but without all of the time under the UV rays that can be so unhealthy do you.

Sunless tanning lotions are most beneficial because they are a health benefit. Using them isn’t necessarily helpful, but it can keep you from doing something that can be very unhealthy. It is a proven fact that the sun’s UV rays can cause skin cancer and accelerate the aging process in people. If you want a tan then you are probably already worried a little bit about how you look, so why speed up aging? Sunless tanning lotions are a fantastic alternative to beds and beaches. You can get your tanned look while avoiding the cancer and aging risks.
