If you are a sufferer of heartburn like myself, and most everybody at some stage in their lifetime will be, will know just how excruciatingly painful it can be. Heartburn is a symptom of Gastro-esophageal reflux or Gurd and is the bane of many peoples lives. Did you know that heartburn is caused when acidic juices from the stomach are able to flow back into the esophagus, and because of this we get the burning sensation we feel in the middle of our chest which is a result of the esophagus becoming irritated – ie heartburn.
Heartburn can be brought on by many factors, and as today we live such full, fast paced lives this is thought to exacerbate the problem. The cause of heartburn is when the valve between the esophagus and the stomach -which allows food material to be passed into the stomach and should prevent it from coming back up – does not always work. Some unfortunate people are born with a weak valve.
There are links to heartburn with being overweight, eating too many spicy or fatty foods, smoking and eating too late. So we should try to curb some of these trends to help reduce the problem. Studies have shown that 41 per cent of adults had suffered from reflux symptoms within the past six months, and many experiencing symptoms (15-20 per cent) on a weekly basis with a few suffering daily. These studies also suggested that the incidence of heartburn has increased five fold in the past 25 years, making it one of the fastest health growing problems.
There has not been one particular reason singled out as to just why such a big increase has been recorded, but modern lifestyles and diets are thought to be the forefront culprit. For us over thirty, our eating habits have changed dramatically during the past 25 years, especially with the introduction of fast foods. These foods are often cooked by deep fat frying and are saturated in fats, which ensues many health problems.
Also many people now no longer eat the amount of vegetables as regularly as we once did, this is often because we are not growing our own vegetables as modern housing does not allow enough space for gardens and with allotments areas being built upon.
A healthy diet and regular exercise is essential for everybody and even more so us heartburn sufferers, so always try to maintain this as best as you can, and we are told to keep rich indulgent food being to a minimum or a treat once in a while, but is this the truth. Some people think otherwise. I recently downloaded an audio book by Don Smith called The Heartburn Cure and published by DJ Publishing, which has helped answer many questions I had. Books like this are informative in many ways, from looking at how changing environments, to stress management, even our attitude can have an effect on our heartburn, and other factors I really had not given a thought to!
Also making sure we are taking the correct ‘over the counter’ product for ourselves, and helping to find natural foods and ingredients that can do the same is good news. Anything that is natural and harmless and can give relief from the pain of heartburn is of interest to me, and no doubt you too.

When we first got involved in health and fitness there were only paper books available to read on these subjects. This meant that normally we only had time to read in the evenings after getting back from work. Although while traveling to and from work so much time seemed to be wasted, as you can not drive and read at the same time. Then in the last few years audio download sites started to appear. We were so impressed with all the ‘talking’ books you could download. So now we can download any books and listen to them anytime we have time on our hands even when driving.
