The Bad Workout: Some Advice for Female Bodybuilders

Bad workouts. We have all had them at some time or other. When you need to train so intensely to break the muscle down it is hardly surprising that the odd bad session occurs. After all, we are only human and we cannot be 100% consistent all the time. (I would question that when it comes to Ronnie Coleman but I am sure even he has had his bad days).

But there are bad workouts and bad workouts. I am not talking here about the ones we know are going to be bad. You know the ones I mean… you arrive at the gym knowing you are going to perform badly. You have had a stressful day at work, failed to eat properly, you feel tired… all these things sap you physically and mentally. You walk into the gym knowing that day’s workout is not going to be one you want to remember.

And I am not talking about those days when your training suffers because you get distracted. Successful bodybuilders need very strong mental focus. You have to have the right mind set to lift with proper form and push your muscles beyond that failure point… and that is not helped by hearing that twit on the other side of the gym clanging the dumbbells together like they are a couple of cymbals at the top of every shoulder press rep. Or by watching the grunting idiot swinging far too much weight around; more to massage his poor ego than to build some mass. Face it: any serious lifter has to witness so much stupidity in the gym that it is a wonder that you can get a half decent workout in without peeing your pants laughing at what other gym members think lifting weights is.

So, picture it. You have eaten well. Just come off a rest day. You’re working your favorite body part. You are psyched, in the zone. Nothing or no-one in the gym can stop you putting in a killer session today. You stride purposefully up to the hack squat. Do some stretching. And start some warm-up sets. Hmmm… feels a bit heavy but I’ll keep going. You put some plates on, getting ready to go all-out… you can hit 20 reps today. You can feel it. But your quads think differently. You max out at ten and you’re a quivering wreck… what the hell happened?

Bad workouts with no excuses are a bodybuilder’s nightmare. After all, we plan our training and nutrition so that bad workouts do not happen. Doubt starts to creep in about the plan you have. Am I eating right? Am I resting enough? Am I lifting right? It can sap your motivation when a setback like that occurs. And the stress about how the next session will be can be intolerable.

The key is not to panic. As with any sport you are training a human body. We may know a vast amount about how the body functions but there is no doubt that there is even more that we still need to learn. So, go into your next workout thinking that the bad one you just had was a blip and nothing more. You are still on the right road to the physique you want. Never feel it is worth changing your diet or training routine just because of one bad day.

But do not forget about it. Use it as a learning experience. I have found that my quads have their weak days every now and then. It is just how my body works. I know that if I have a bad quad day I need to rest them just a little bit more. Bodybuilding success comes from knowing your body and how it reacts. Everyone is an individual. No amount of personal training or advice can replace hard earned experience from the gym. And a bad workout is still good experience. Learn from that bad session and move on a wiser bodybuilder.

The most often cited reason for a bad workout is over-training. There is no doubt that over-training is a major issue for bodybuilders. Many of us are over-training and are not even aware of it. A bad session like this can be a symptom that reveals a need to take the foot off the gas just a little bit. To be honest, if you have periodic rest phases over-training should not be an issue for you. Let the body recover completely or your gains will be minimized. If your bad workouts become more consistent it is your body’s way of asking for a break. Listen to your body. It is the reason you are training in the first place. Treat it with respect and you will achieve your goals. Treat it like crap and you will look like crap.

Most importantly, remember that attaining a great physique is a long term goal. You are not going to morph into a muscle babe overnight. It takes time and patience to add pounds of muscle. Years of dedication and consistency are necessary. Focus on the long term. One bad session every three months is only four bad sessions a year. That means you must have had at least 200 great workouts in that same year. And it is those great ones you should focus on. Add all of those up and you get what you are working for: an incredible physique that you can be proud of.

The question I’m asked most frequently is, “how do I give my abs the best workout?”

Well, the real secret is in how many different exercises you do and how well you target each area of your stomach.

If the only exercises you’re doing right now consist of crunches or sit-ups, then you’re settling for a sub-par workout. Your abs have the ability to handle very high repetitions, but they also like to be surprised, just doing crunches and sit-ups alone won’t always do the trick.

So if you’d like to feel what it’s like to get a killer ab workout, then here’s a simple formula you can try.

The first step is to pick 7 different abdominal exercises — not just one or two. Each exercise should be unique and slightly different than the other 6 to the work different areas of your stomach. And dont forget your oblique muscles.

Since your abdominal muscles will peak and max out at 21 sets, all you have to do is repeat those 7 exercises 3 times. For each set, perform 25 repetitions or less of each movement to avoid overtraining those muscles.

I would suggest doing between 10 and 15 reps to get started (12 reps is what I prefer) The trick is to do all 7 exercises in a row first and then go back to repeat each of the 7 exercise in a row 2 more times with your desired number of repetitions.

It’s better to start off with a lower number of reps so you don’t hurt yourself as well.

Remember, this is the formula I use to get a killer ab workout, so make sure you approach it slowly at first, or you’ll definitely be sore the next day.

Gallbladder disease and especially gallstones are conditions that most of us might have and not even know about this. The reason for this is because almost all people suffering from gallstones have no symptoms to indicate that. On average, symptoms for gallstones may appear somewhere around eight. It is also believed that smaller stones can even cause more pain that the big ones.

Although they might take years to develop, symptoms for gallbladder disease are many and some of them quite painful. One symptom and maybe the most common of all is biliary colic. This is a pain in the upper side of the abdomen, in the middle or in the right part of your abdomen. A gallbladder patient may suffer many pain attacks of this kind. When this attacks takes place you may have one of the symptoms listed below:

- vomiting;

- nausea;

- gas;

These attacks usually last a few hours, sometimes even longer. But be careful, if the pain persists for more than four hours, you might be suffering from more serious problems.

As you will notice, these pain attacks usually happen after you have eaten a fat meal. They also occur almost at the same exact time of the day, but not more than twice a week. These episodes can be sproradic and may not happen for years to came in almost half of the patients.

The second most common of the symptoms is the infection or inflammation of the gallbladder. This mainly takes place when the person has gallstones, but it can also happen if you are not suffering from them. The symptoms that indicate if you have an inflamated gallbladder are very similar to those of biliary colic. The only difference is that the pain attacks are more severe and persistent.

Like the first condition, you will feel pain in the upper part of the abdomen that can rdiate to the back portion of the body. Together with this pain, the patient can feel tenderness. Although the pain decreases with passing hours, discomfort can be felt even two days later. Another difference from the first symptom is that you might suffer from chills and develop a fever.

If you have any of all these symptoms, the best thing to do is see a doctor right away. This condition must be treated before it gets even worse and may cause additional damage.

Ocular migraines are a period of strange visual sensations that may, or may not be followed by a migraine headache.

Who gets them?

They are most common in people who already suffer from classic migraine.

So what happens?

An ocular migraine usually only happens in one eye. When it begins, you may just notice that something is off with your sight.

You may see a tiny spot. Over a period of a few minutes, that spot may get bigger. You may start to lose your vision in patches. The expanded spot may start to shimmer or develop a colored or zig-zagged border.

This pattern may get bigger until it is not only in the center of your vision – but in the outer part too. Usually over 15-30 minutes the distortion may travel out to the side of your vision as well and then simply disappear.

You may, or may not go on to develop a migraine headache. Many people who suffer with this say that they only feel tired after the experience.

What causes ocular migraine?

No one’s quite sure – but it is believed to be caused by an unusual stimulation of the nerves at the back of the brain. In classical migraine, a spasm affects the surface of the brain. In ocular migraine, the blood supply to the eye or the supply to the vision area of the brain is affected.

How often do they happen?

In the same way as classic migraines, ocular ones seem to happen with no particular pattern. You may find that you have several in one week and then not suffer any more at all for months or even years.

Do they have any warning, like a migraine aura?

Some people find that they are extra-sensitive to light and/or sound and this is their signal that an ocular migraine could be on the way.

So who do I go to see – a Doctor or an ophthalmologist?

Many people often go and see their ophthalmologist as they are worried that they are losing their sight. People starting with ocular migraine should also see a neurologist so that other conditions which can give rise to the same sort of symptoms can be ruled out. These include a blood clot in the retinal artery, migraine with aura and stroke.

What treatment can I get for them?

Ocular migraines themselves don’t usually require treatment. They appear to be triggered by the same triggers common to migraine. Prevention is the best way of coping with them:

Avoid known triggers
Keep stress levels down
Keep to a regular routine
Make sure you get enough sleep

If they are followed by a migraine headache, the usual migraine medications might be prescribed by your Doctor.

Please note: Triptans, which are now commonly used for migraine treatment should not be used for people with ocular migraine. This is because they work by reducing the enlargement of blood vessels and therefore get rid of the pressure on nerves.

This constricting effect could give rise to problems with the blood vessels of the retina and could even result in lost vision.
