Recovery

When we are training for something, there is a need to recover before the next training session. Training on tired muscles produces double the lactic acid in a muscle and this lactic acid causes tiredness, fatigue and stiffness in joints.

Recover means that the muscle has been flushed of the waste matter that accumulated during its use. These days, for example, in gym, you might find weight trainers doing one muscle group only once a week. Monday abs, Tuesday legs, Wednesday Arms etc. The inference is that it takes that muscle a whole week to recover. And these people are experts.

There are other variables in recovery from training as well. Recovery is not totally a time dependent issue.

Conditioning. The more flexible the muscle, the faster it recovers.

Food. The more alkalising foods the faster acids are flushed

Hydration. Flooded kidneys push acid into muscle. Only take water in single mouthfuls, at room temp. If not the kidney dumps the fluid.

Position. Upper body recovers faster standing up. Lower body recovers faster when legs are elevated above the head. (lying flat with legs straight up a wall)

Activity. Gentle activity recuperates muscles faster than stillness.

Cold. Cold temperatures compress muscles and squeeze toxin out.

Compression. Tights and skin stockings improve circulation

Drugs. Aspirin thins blood and supports flushing

Chemicals. Magnesium, potassium and other electrolytes flush toxin

Meals. Heavy meals hold toxins in the bowel.

Beer. Beer is one of the worst acidifying agents. Red wine comes in second.

Sugar. Simple sugar, (means sweets) are toxic for recovery.

Stress. Stress locks toxins in cells. Inhibits flushing.

Exercise. Mild exercise for 10-20 minutes helps

Fitness. A muscle can adapt to high levels of demand and burn less fuel if given time

Breathing. Probably the most important. Deep lung breathing is the fastest recuperation mechanism. Deep breathing through nose, full lung slight hold at filled position.

Training on tired and sore muscles is like driving with one foot on the brake and one foot on the accelerator.

Things that help recovery fast.

Yoga

Stretch

Breathing

Legs up wall

Paul Bragg – Apple Cider Vinegar (three times a day – but most important first thing in morn and last at night)

Lemon in hot water

Sit on one of those inflatable balls instead of a chair.

Sip warm water all day (never drink it)

Green Tea

Umaboshi plumb. ( my absolute miracle cure for tiredness)

Reduce beer and red wine – alcohol

Less sugar in tea and coffee etc

Frequent short exercise during the day (keep the blood flow high)

Lymph drainage massage

Tights

Not too tight shoes or socks (especially the grip on the calf)

Sleep on back pillow behind knees

Stacks of vegies

Less red meat,

No pork

Reduce sugars and complex carbs.

Laughter

Lower stress

Gall bladder cleans (colonics)

Thin blood with aspirin or herbal equivalent

Muscle Ease (health food supplement)

Endura in water during exercise

Stay hydrated during exercise

Sweating is good.

Adequate sleep.

Remember. Don’t train on tired muscles.

Gradual Training build up

In the 8 weeks leading to a trip in Nepal. I begin a build up program that is gentle but reaches my goals.

I do steps 3-4 times a week. At about 60-70% MHR.

brianmac.demon.co.uk/maxhr.htm brianmac.demon.co.uk/maxhr.htm

There are around 120 steps

In the first of the 8 weeks I do 3 days of the steps, 10 times (up and down)

The second of the 8 weeks I do 3 days of the steps 10 times and one day 20.

The third of the 8 weeks I do 3 days of the steps, 15 times and one day 25

The forth of the 8 weeks I do 3 days of the steps at 20 time and one day 30

From now on I do 20 steps 3 times a week. And one day I add another five eg 35

Then 40, then 45 and finally 50.

Do Hoodia Gordonii diet pills offer you body fat benefits? Why all the seemingly sudden chatter about this mysterious, recently discovered weight loss supplement product? And, how about diet pills in general? Can they work for you in a winning way?

In almost any “Nutrition 101” type of formalized educational source, you find a very generally and overall negative view on the possible benefits of weight loss supplements. However, one’s own careful study and investigation is the most appropriate way of ascertaining facts and figures.

The South African cactus botanical, Hoodia Gordonii, appears to exhibit some positive weight loss assistive traits and characteristics, incorporating neurotransmitter and synaptic gap theory.

Two supportive facts do exist in its favor:

ONE: It appears to be an all-natural, botanical, weight loss supplement source, with no known negative better-body.biz/hoodia-side-effects.htm side effects.

TWO: Its appetite suppressant and thirst reduction qualities incorporate synaptic perception in the hypothalamus, which,in plainer terms means that your body may elect to issue the command “not to eat as much,” or “not to drink as much.”

Less food translates to fewer calories, and lowered caloric intake awards you with “negative energy balance.”

Negative energy balance is the state wherein your body is losing weight, not gaining, and not merely maintaining present pounds, but actually DROPPING fatty tissue, excess or unused calories, removing inches of unwanted body fat mass from your body, and rewarding you with a much leaner, firmer, aesthetically-pleasing appearance or physique.

No diet pills are actually meant to be a substitute for proper eating and exercise. However, when supplementation is needed, a quality, all natural diet pill from a botanical food source appears to be make logical sense.

The recent success of Hoodia Gordonii diet pills may provide yet another reasonable alternative to weight loss candidates who seek sensible body fat assistance and solutions.

Hoodia Gordonii seems very much UNLIKE a passing fad. As worldwide body fat candidates continue to struggle with the age-old challenges of overcoming excess body weight and seek expertise on how to lose weight, the need for a viable, natural, effective, long-term solution appears evident.

Learning how to lose weight is the first target on your basic body fat agenda. It needs to be marked with particular care and attention because it is this, and not the appetite suppressant qualities of any diet pills, that gives you the key to long-term weight management success.

Yet, millions of hopeful weight loss candidates may still continue to take too lightly the value of proven, scientific, body fat principles. With this, the appeal of appetite suppressants, weight loss supplements, and diet pills remains quite alluring.

However, the fact remains that it costs you an energy expenditure of precisely 3,500 calories to lose just one pound of body fat. When you know such details, you can more accurately choose when or when not to incorporate a possibly viable nutritional supplement.

Accredited, accurate, and reliable knowledge sources remain the best key. One must use weight loss, exercise science, and fitness facts to corroborate the choice and usage of diet pills. And, this includes Hoodia Gordonii because no amount of appetite suppressant in this world can help you lose weight properly if you do not incorporate the above factual fat burning foods detail.

This is absolute truth for how-to-lose-weight triumph.

Weight loss supplements such as Hoodia Gordonii can be helpful if and when you engage, overall, in SMART eating (that is, choosing foods low in saturated fat, sugar, sodium, cholesterol, and artificial chemical preservatives) plus realize and adopt the knowledge that “threshold-reaching” physical activity practiced about three times per week gives you the most powerful body fat composition improvement advantages and possibilities.

Use the above information to help determine whether Hoodia Gordonii diet pills truly do offer you measurable and reliable body fat benefits.

One of the ongoing things we’re trying at the dojo is broadening our student base. Lots of students get a little upset at punches flying at them, and the like, so we’re evaluating some of the softer styles for an introductory class. I’m looking at turning Wing Chun forms into the basis for a practical martial arts style, and helping with the instructions with it.

First, I learned Wing Chun as a “recuperative” style – I needed some time off to let my feet heal from doing stupid things with a wooden sparring dummy and inadequate footwear. My Dad had taken to Wing Chun for joint ailments as he’s gotten older, and had showed me some of the basics, and I asked permission of his teacher, Greg Pool, if I could record his opening lecture for his introductory class. This is what I got.

“Wing Chun is a balanced style, and I’m planning on doing the following forms with it: The open stance, which is fairly high, keeps the elbows close to the body, and keeps the balance over the knees, is a good one for getting pupils into, particularly if they don’t have a lot of martial arts training. The initial lessons will focus on relaxation techniques, and fluid movements. Wing Chun is a style that emphasizes relaxed motions – extra muscle tension slows down the speed of reactions, and builds up fatigue. While we’re going to focus on Wing Chun as, in some ways, an animated relaxation technique, this will be giving you the baseline for learning other martial arts, going to whatever styles you prefer.”

“The basic stance will have your feet at slightly less than shoulder width part, with your knees bent at about a 20 degree angle, and your toes pointed in. From this stance, breath in through the nose, and out through the mouth, and try to relax – you’ll feel a sense of dynamic tension in your hamstrings and quadriceps when you’re done.”

“For motions, we’ll start with the circular blocks from the left side going to the right. Again, redirection and smooth flow is the key to this. Watch what I do…breathe in through the nose, out through the mouth.”

Now, my experiences with Wing Chun are that it’s more like the Northern Chinese styles I’m familiar with – it’s a whole body style, emphasizing economy of motion and blocks. It’s got a lot of good footwork in its basic forms, and it’s used a lot in martial arts movies, most notably those starring Jet Li.

One of the oddities of the Wing Chun forms is that it really de-emphasizes kicks and throws and power moves. This is ultimately because it’s meant to be a defensive style first. Breaking the lines of the basic form for more power gives your opponent defensive opportunities. However, just because it’s a softer style, don’t think it’s a snap. Like all of the opening martial arts forms, it’ll leave you with a healthy sweat before you’re done, and your knees and hips will absolutely feel it.

The upper body workout focuses on delivering power through the sternum to the shoulder – you try to keep your arms relaxed before throwing a block or a strike, because relaxed muscles respond faster, and get more speed. Trying to power through a block or a punch is almost always slower.

Because the Wing Chun stance is higher than I’m used to, it takes some adjustment for me, not to sink too low. Fortunately, for most beginning students, a higher stance is more familiar to them from every day life. Very few people walk around in the Tiger Crouch when going to the super market, while Wing Chun isn’t too far off from a standard “walking posture”.

Going a Step Further with Teeth Cleaning

Posted by admin On April - 30 - 2007

Getting your teeth cleaned is a no brainer given the food we all eat. Every so often, however, you need to get more extensive treatment if you are smart.

Dentists recommend that their patients receive a routine dental cleaning every six months. A regular dental cleaning is mostly for preventative purposes. It cleans the teeth more thoroughly than can be done at home. Sometimes dentists recommend that patients have a more thorough cleaning.

Dentists usually recommend a deep cleaning when there is evidence of bone loss or recession of the gums from the teeth. These are both signs that gum disease might occur. There are two parts to the process. The first is scaling. Scaling is done to remove plaque, which is present above and below the gum line. The second step is root plaining. The dentist will remove any rough spots on the root of the tooth. By smoothing out the tooth, the gum is more likely to reattach.

Not all patients need such thorough cleaning. There is also no standard amount of times that you should have it done. If a patient can benefit from it, the dentist will discuss it with the patient. This type of cleaning is usually only done when there is evidence of periodontal disease. After the cleaning, dentists will usually prescribe an antibiotic to help eliminate any remaining bacteria.

This procedure is usually done in the office of the dentist or oral surgeon. It is an outpatient, non-surgical procedure. It is usually done in two appointments. The dentist will give small shots in the gum line to numb the area. The procedure is usually not painful. Some patients might experience some pain when the shots are administered. There also might be a little sensitivity afterwards. Dentists will generally schedule a follow up appointment in about four to six weeks. They will determine what further treatment, if any, needs to be completed.

The costs depends a lot on what type of dental insurance a patient has. Some dental plans will pay for it as part of a prevention plan for periodontal disease. Other dental plans will require that a patient pay a deductible or a percentage of the cost themselves. If a patient does not have dental insurance, the cost can be several hundred dollars. If cost is a concern, the patient should discuss with their dentist whether the cleaning is essential. If so, the dentist might be able to work out a payment plan. Although it can be expensive, it can help prevent future damage that will cost a lot more to repair or treat.

How to Recognise Depression

Posted by admin On April - 29 - 2007

Mental health, not the sort of thing most people choose to talk about seriously. We’ve all heard the comments about ‘Sad Sack’, ‘Mr Grumpy’ or phrases like ‘Smile, I’ll pay for the stitches!’ or ‘Stop moping around’. It saddens me every time I hear a remark like that, something insensitive or said out of plain ignorance, usually by people who have little or no contact with people who suffer from depression, and most certainly do not have a loved one or family member that suffers from depression or any other mental disorder, that can so easy get a tight grip on a sufferers life. It’s almost tabboo if you think about it.

Suffering from depression or mental health problems, is something that most people feel ashamed to admit. Who wouldn’t, with comments like those above aimed right at you. If you have suffered from major depression or have had an episode of depression that has contributed significantly to a change in your daily life, facing up to comments like those above is something that you will have to accecpt sooner or later.

What about those people who don’t suffer a major depression or severe episode, whether life-threatening or not? Those of us who definately don’t have depression and definately don’t need to see a shrink to confirm what we already know: that we are not depressed! This brings me to the core of this article: How do you recognise depression?

It is so very important to be vigilant. To be aware of the warning signs, and the earlier they are spotted, the better. Why? Because being depressed leads to behaviour that is not helpful. Behaviour that over time, is reinforced day after day, month after month. Slowly but surely getting a firm grip on your life. It is much harder to spot a change in behaviour if it occurs and develops gradually over time. But what are these signs and behaviour that we should look out for?

The most common symptom of depression and one which most people think is the only one is having a persistant empty or ’sad’ mood. This is not what can sometimes be reffered to as feeling ‘down in the dumps’. The mood will last from several weeks at least. At which point you should see a psychiatrist or doctor. A feeling of pessimism, hopelessness or helplessness and being critical of oneself for never being good enough at anything no matter what we do. Depression can lead to a lack of interest in persuits someone usually enjoys. Feeling lethargic or having no enegry or drive, even for sex, is another symptom of depression that can slowly be re-enforced over time. Trouble with sleeping and eating is a symptom that most people would not usually associate with depression. Sleeping disorders are often dismissed as having developed a mild case of insomnia that will surely go away over time. Some people wake early in the morning and are unable to fall back asleep. Eating disturbances to, especially in women, can hide the depression, because the first thing that will come to mind is anorexia or bulimia. This is true, but we also need to place these symptoms in context, which is why it is so important to know the facts and symptoms of depression so that we can see the bigger picture.

Depression often goes hand in hand with anxiety. Anxiety can also cause sleeping disturbances, as well as a feeling of dread, increased heart rate and more severely, panic attacks. Depression and anxiety can easily knock our confidence levels as both can lead to difficulty concerntrating and remembering or making decisions. These symptoms can climax with devistating effect. Within the workplace they can lead to a complete nervous breakdown where the person no longer knows, or can’t remember how to do their job or how they even got there. Nothing makes sense and it can be very frightening when you are faced with a situation like this where you no longer know what is happening around you, or much less, why you are feeling this way. Depression can also manifest itself through persistent physical symptoms or pains that do not seem to respond to treatment. Irritable and losing ones temper are also symptoms of deppression, seen more often in males than females. Thoughts of suicide, attempts and plans are never to be taken lightly. Often, suicide attempts are a cry for help. Sometimes they are not.

A person can be diagnosed with depression if four or more of the symptoms above have been present in a two week period or more. Not everyone will have the same symptoms so it is important to be aware and look for signs of all symptoms of depression. Remember, only a doctor or psychiatrist can diagnose depression.

For many people the cycle of yeast infection is complicated often by
the use of antibiotics leads to a natural remedy for yeast infection
search. A common candida albicans symptom is a white discharge but
there are a number of different symptoms that vary from person to person.

Other symptoms include food allergies, itching, burning during urination, digestive problems, acne, lowered immune system and short attention span. I have seen a natural remedy for yeast infection on the internet that involved cloves of garlic and it is important to be careful with that when
used in a sensitive part of your body. Also some natural remedies can be toxic to the liver
so this needs to be researched carefully.

One helpful contribution to a natural remedy for yeast infection is to avoid scented
bubble baths as well as avoiding tight underwear made of synthetic materials. It’s important
to get out of swimsuits and exercise clothing quickly as yeast grows in a damp environment.
Another overlooked candida albicans symptom is a rash or redness around the area.

One step in getting a natural remedy for yeast infection is to have a swab taken by your
physician to diagnose properly. There are some good antifungals including oil of oregano,
grapefruit seed extract and clarkia , but it’s good to have a well-organized systematic
plan that can synthesize antifungals, probiotics, antioxidants, hygeine and diet.

It is helpful to eat foods more on the alkalinic side. One type of apple that is not
high in sugars is the granny smith apple. I was surprised to learn that 75 percent of
women will get a yeast infection in their life time. This is why it’s helpful to have
some knowledge of candida albicans symptom analysis.

One thing to be aware of is that it’s easy to get a magnesium deficiency when you
have a yeast infection so try to stay conscious of this. Also hormones can play a role
in candida albicans so be aware during pregnancy as well as different times in your cycle
as sugar feeds on estrogen and progesterone. It can seem overwhelming to find a natural
remedy for yeast infection but putting together the helpful agents into a plan will give you
success. Try to not just pick and choose but use a system you follow daily.

Getting Started: Bifocal Contact Lenses

Posted by admin On April - 29 - 2007

Maybe you didn’t know there were such things as bifocal contact lenses? If you thought that your condition was one that was going to cause you to wear nothing but those heavy, thick and hard to use eyeglasses for the rest of your life, you are mistaken. Many individuals who wear glasses for vision correction can use contacts but now, many who need to use bifocals can also use bifocal contact lenses. You don’t have to be left in the dark to suffer. You can reclaim your look and style by choosing these contacts.

Are They Right For Me?

The question that you need to talk to your eye doctor about is whether or not they are the right choice for your eyes. You will need a new prescription if you do go with them, so take some time to schedule an appointment with your eye doctor and ask just what ability you have to wear contacts. They are not for everyone, unfortunately, but for those who have typically healthy eyesight with a need for bifocals, there is a good possibility that they are right for you.

Your eye doctor will provide a number of tests. He is likely checking for your eye’s health. Then, he will take measurements of the eye itself to allow for a right fit. Once this is complete, the doctor will, most of the time, be able to provide you with a set of the correct type of lens for your eyes. At this point, they will also teach you how to put them in, how to wash them and how to handle them. And, he’ll tell you if they are disposable or find the right solution for your specific needs.

But, stop there….

What About Price?

There are few ways to spend your money that are better than taking care of your eyes. But, you don’t have to go broke doing it either. You can find excellent prices on the contacts that you need. To start, you’ll need that prescription the doctor gave you. While you may go ahead and purchase that first pair from them, you may want to hold off on making a larger purchase as it can be quite expensive. Instead, move to the web. You’ll find excellent options in product selection as well as great deals at the same time.

Any location that you do purchase from will require a valid prescription usually within one year of the eye exam. This is necessary as having something just a bit off can really through off the prescription and become quite painful for your eyes. Now, you’ll find websites that offer a wonderful selection and while you can switch from brand to brand, you should never go for a lens that is completely different in nature than what was prescribed. Also, you should request a free sample to insure the comfort of the lens.

Lastly, to get a great price on them, all you need to do is shop around. Shopping online will almost always guarantee you discount prices as well as convenience.

Which Of These Will Provide Relief For Eczema?

Posted by admin On April - 28 - 2007

Many people prefer creams for the topical medication that dermatologists/physicians prescribe to treat eczema as a first phase treatment.

Ointments tend to be messier because of the petroleum base that is used in the formula while creams, lotions, gels, and straight liquid will absorb into the skin and do not tend to get on things (such as clothing).

There are times that you will receive prescriptions for ointments, though. This is because certain medications are much more effective when a petroleum base is used rather than a water or oil base.

Creams are water or oil based and the two liquids combine, forming a suspension of oil and water in a 50/50 ratio. The medication within this base penetrates the outer layer of the skin (stratum corneum) better. Creams are very soothing as a general rule and also act as a moisturizing agent; in the case of eczema, these qualities are very helpful in alleviating the itchy skin.

Liquids are used as bath additives, paint-on medications (such as calamine lotion), gels, wet dressings, and lotions. Tar baths consist of a liquid (with tar as the active ingredient) which is added to bath water. Certain oils may be recommended as bath additives or as moisturizing agents at times. Liquids tend to dry weeping lesions best.

Ointments, which are usually petroleum based, use a combination ratio of 80/20 with the 80 being oil and the 20 being water. An 80/20 oil/water mixture is a better barrier against loss of moisture. Liquid and cream medications cannot boast the moisture locking characteristics of ointments. You may now be wondering why all dermatologists do not just prescribe ointments since moisture retention in a main factor in alleviating eczema symptoms.

This is again due to the fact that certain medications are better in one form than they are in another, meaning that some corticosteroids will work much better as a cream or lotion than they will as an ointment. The difference is all in the delivery. Some medications need to be quickly absorbed into the skin (these are in cream or liquid form) while others work better when slowly released into the skin (ointments do this). Ointments are most often prescribed when there are very dry patches of eczema because they lock in moisture and provide a temporary, yet effective, barrier on the skin.

Pastes are a combination of oil, powder, and water. The form is known as a suspension, similar to certain children’s medications like Tylenol suspension. This form of suspension is intended to be applied to the skin, though not to be taken orally. The greasy qualities of some creams, some liquids, and all ointments and are often drying.

One of the most common forms of paste as a topical medication for eczema is a suspension made up of calcium hydroxide solution, oil, and zinc oxide (which is the powder in this case). Like lotions, pastes are best used for soothing and drying open lesions in areas affected by eczema. These should never be applied to skin creases and folds (such as the genital area, the bend of the elbow, and the backs of knees) when there are open lesions. These areas, because of the bend and friction, tend to cause the suspension to clump, which in turn, further irritates the skin and worsens the eczema in that area.

Pregnancy back pain in general and early pregnancy back pain in particular is a common complaint during pregnancy with more than 50% pregnant women suffering from it.
