Does your partner snore and disturb your sleep? There’s no point arguing about it, because the snorer probably has not control over what’s happening. In fact, it may signal an issue that requires immediate medical attention.

Snoring is caused by a blockage in the breathing passage, and may be caused by:

Allergies
Mis-positioned jaw or tongue
Throat weakness
Fatty deposits in and around the throat
Obstructive sleep apnea

The final cause listed, obstructive sleep apnea, can be a major medical problem that requires treatment. Snoring occurs because of the movement of air around the narrow air passage formed by soft tissues at the back of your throat and nose. In obstructive sleep apnea, snoring is a serious problem that interferes with normal breathing patterns during sleep. Sleep apnea can be recognized by the fact that the sufferer will snore when asleep on his back, but doesn’t snore when he sleeps on his side.

So what actually happens in sleep apnea? Basically, the upper airway collapses, which makes breathing difficult for a short period of time. This can be caused by an obstruction in the nasal passage, the soft tissues of the throat, soft palate or tongue. The negative pressures of inhaling often make the problem worse, by making it harder on the soft tissues. Eventually, the person wakes up, which puts more tension on the muscles, throat and tongue, and starts them breathing again as the airways open up to supply oxygen to the lungs. Often this is accompanied by snorting and startled awakening patterns.

Sleep apnea tends to follow a standard pattern, which is the person snores, then for 10-20 seconds stops breathing, which results in the snoring going quiet. Then the patient gasps for breath suddenly, and wakes up with a snort in order to inhale more air. This pattern is referred to as the sleep-snore-apnea-wake pattern. As you can imagine, this makes it very difficult for the sufferer to get a good night’s sleep. Well over 90% of people with sleep apnea display this pattern, and can occur as many as 100-400 times in one night in extreme cases.

The good news is that there are a number of things that can be used to help relieve the problem of sleep apnea. Once your doctor has determined what’s causing the problem, he or she will discuss treatment options with you, so that you can choose the most appropriate one.

Wearing a mask at night to improve breathing by keeping the throat open
Using decongestants and antihistamines to keep the nasal passages unclogged
Sleeping in the upright position can be helpful for overweight sufferers. This can be achieved by elevating the head of the bed.
Using ‘Breathe Right’ strips to relieve blocked nasal passages at nighttime
Special pillow to stretch the neck
Turbinectomy. The nasal passages are opened by removing soft tissue and bone in this surgical procedure
Laser surgery can remove excess tissue from the soft palate and uvula
CPAP. A mask covers the patient’s nose, and air is supplied through the mask at a predetermined level. This way the optimal air pressure is always maintained.
Dental appliances can be used to hold the jaw or tongue forward, keeping the airway open at the back of the throat
Injection Snoreplasty. In this procedure a topical anesthetic is injected into the back of the throat and palate, giving a numbed effect. This stiffens the mouth for around three weeks, which stops the palate fluttering and producing the snoring noise

Metabolism

Burning calories in food to produce energy is called metabolism. Between the ages of 30-40 your metabolism starts slowing down. Along with that, every ten years your body burns energy about 2 to 4 percent slower. Burning fewer calories causes more fat to be store. If you do nothing you become fatter and you begin feeling tired all the time. The add weight put more stress on you heart, knees, hips, and could raise you blood pressure.

The older we get the more muscle we lose and fat is gained. Muscle burns a lot of energy, our energy needs goes down as we lose muscle, and our metabolism slows. A metabolic slowdown is our own doing. We do lose some muscle as we age, but our inactivity causes most of the muscle loss. We become less active the older we get, with that we lose lean muscle. With less lean muscle, less active, and getting older. Our metabolism slows to a crawl.

What you can do about your Metabolism

Aerobic Exercise and Resistance Training

With exercise you can get your metabolism at a higher rate, so you burn calories long after you stop.

You can increase your metabolism rate, through the use of aerobic workouts and resistance training.

Muscles are the calorie burning engine that keeps you lean and healthy. The resting metabolic rate is based on your muscle mass. Simple the more muscles you have the more calories you burn. This will continue while resting or even sleeping. Person # 1 burns 1 calorie a minute and person # 2 burns 1.5 calories a minutes. Why? Because person # 2 has more muscle mass and you know muscles loves to eat calories.

Resistance Training builds long lean muscles which reduces the amount of body fat. The Resistance Training person has on average an 18% higher base metabolic rate than an inactivity person. One who does aerobic is 13% higher. This example states being active makes you healthier and fit than someone who is inactive. The inactive person’s metabolism rate continues to a slow crawl, both the Resistance workout and aerobic increases.

Aerobic workouts should be done for a least 45 minutes to 1 hour with 1 day on 1 day off. Resistance workouts are done on the off days with about 30 minute for each set.

Changes Eating Habits

Do not eat large meals; the body can only burn some many calories per meal. Eat small meals so the body can burn all the calories for energy and not store them as fat. Smaller meals means you eat more often lets say every 2-3 hours. No in between snacks, cut out junk food (empty calories), no sugar (turns directly into FAT), cut back on salt (retains body fluids), and no dairy products. Except for Fish and chicken eat all other meats in small portions at meals.

Conclusion

Simple to understand: 1. Eat right Eat less 2. Workout more.

Causes Of And Treatments For Chronic Bad Breath

Posted by admin On September - 30 - 2006

Everyone experiences bad breath from time to time, however it’s estimated that up to 25% of adults suffer from chronic bad breath. There are many contributing factors to halitosis, or bad breath and most are not serious, usually arising from the growth of oral bacteria.

Oral hygiene does in fact contribute to the majority of malodorous conditions in the mouth. Eating certain kinds of foods including garlic, onion and curry are notorious for causing bad breath. These foods, after circulating through the bloodstream, exit the body through the lungs and eventually the mouth. They tasted good deal better going down and they do coming up.

Also any condition which causes the drying of the mouth will contribute to bad breath. Saliva is a natural digestive enzyme. Anything that inhibits saliva production will create a fertile breeding ground for the bacteria that reside on the back of your teeth and tongue. These bacteria, found in plaque, produce a sulfur compound which most people tend to find unpleasant.

Conditions which contribute to the drying of saliva include many medications, especially diuretics, antihistamines, antidepressants and many of the new drugs that are blasted all over the television. Check the contraindications on any medication you are considering purchasing to see if one of its side effects is dry mouth.

Another condition contributing to dry mouth and the resultant halitosis is age. As we get older, we seem to produce less saliva, enabling the bacteria to grow and the breath of many seniors to become less fresh.

Improved oral hygiene will eliminate most bad breath. Dentists recommend brushing after every meal for a minimum of three minutes and of course, flossing at least daily. It’s also recommended that you purchase a new toothbrush every three or four months.

One can also eliminate normal bad breath by increasing your fluid intake, and rinsing your mouth after eating any dairy product fish product or meat product. The added consumption of fibrous vegetables is also recommended.

It’s also important to clean your tongue. This can be done with a toothbrush or a tongue scraper. Mouthwash will work as well.

So far we’ve discussed only normal, average every day bad breath, not chronic bad breath. It’s estimated however that a percentage of bad breath is caused by more serious dental conditions, such as gum disease. If you’re experiencing chronic bad breath, and the cause is gum disease, it will not be getting any better without intervention from a dentist. The sooner you visit a dentist, the sooner the problem will be eliminated.Your dentist has many options for elimentating malodorous gum disease.

Chronic bad breath isn’t always produced in the mouth though. Chronic bad breath could also be a symptom of a larger medical condition. Indigestion, heartburn, acid reflux, lactose intolerance, food allergies may all contribute to producing that unpleasant odor in your mouth.

My advice is to attend to basic and appropriate oral hygiene as a first-line of defense. If you do not believe the problems to be dental, or dietary, a trip to your physician is your next step, for chronic bad breath may affect more than just your social life it may be an alarm bell which if not answered will impact your health and very life as well.

Sunburn – How to Prevent Sunburn and Remain Wrinkle Free?

Posted by admin On September - 30 - 2006

Sunburn causes damage to the skin. We may forget the sun burn after we get cured, but our skin does not. It gets hurt permanently. Repeated sunburns damage the skin beyond repair and very early signs of wrinkles, sunspots and other skin disorders appear. You want to remain looking young forever. Am I right? Then know how to prevent getting sun burnt.

Sun Burn – precautions

1. Wear a good sun block or sunscreen that will give you protection against the wide spectrum of UV rays. Reapply after every two hours. If you are very fair, choose a higher SPF- 30. Otherwise 15 SPF is good enough.

2. Use a wide brimmed hat to cover your scalp and face. Sun can cause problems in your scalp and most of the early lesions are found on ear etc. Protect scalp and face with a hat that does not allow light in.

3. Use sunglasses to protect your eyes against UV radiation. Along with that you will also be protecting your skin around the eyes or it will develop crow’s feet much faster.

4. Wear clothing that covers most of the body. Walking with fewer clothes in the sun is a recipe for disaster for the skin.

5. Don’t think that clouds stop UV. They allow a lot of it to enter and hurt the skin. Even if the day is cloudy, take all the above precautions.

By protecting yourself from sunburns you are saving your youth for a much longer time and also preventing any skin cancer. Why Doesn’t Laser Hair Removal Always Permanently Remove Hair

Posted by admin On September - 29 - 2006

Laser Hair Removal is now one of the most common ways to get rid of unwanted hair, and done right, can definitely provide permanent hair removal. But the performance of Laser Hair Removal relies on numerous factors, encompassing (i) the kind of laser being used, (ii) the color of your hair, (iii) the color / kind of your skin and (iv) the stage of the hair in the hair growth cycle.

Today there are 5 different types of lasers that can be used to remove unwanted hair. Some lasers suit light skin, some lasers suit dark skin, some suit light hair and some suit dark hair. And even if you get it all right, you still might not be left with permanent hair removal in the short term. You see, the answer lies in the hair growth cycle, and more specifically, what phase of the cycle your unwanted hair is in…. sounds complicated – it is !

Before we get to know the hair growth cycle, it is essential to appreciate just how Laser Hair Removal actually works. That is, to comprehend literally how you can accomplish permanent hair removal, acquiring an appreciation of the laser process is critical.

The laser process doesn’t actually physically remove the unwanted hair. The energy from the laser actually travels through the skin, and is drawn in by the pigment in the hair follicle and shaft. When this energy is absorbed into a hair, the follicles are damaged, which then impairs that particular hairs ability to grow. Eventually the hair will fall out, typically within a matter of weeks.

Getting knowledge of how the laser performs is essential. You need to always remember that the laser doesn’t just make the hair fall out on the spot. It actually impairs the ableness of a hair to grow, causing it to eventually fall out. Now that we have a brief understanding of how the laser operates, it is time to get knowledge of how the hair growth cycle affects the permanence of laser hair removal.

The stage of the hair in the growth cycle will ultimately determine if the hair removal will be permanent, or if another treatment will be required. You see, the hair growth cycle consists of three stages, and the permanence of Laser Hair Removal is more predictable when the hair is in one stage in particular – the growth stage.

The growth cycle of hair includes 3 distinct stages : (1) Active/Anagen (2) Regressive/Catagen (3) Resting/Telogen.

Laser hair removal is most potent in the Anagen stage where the hair contains the most pigment, and is most sensitive to the laser light. If the laser treatment is applied when the hair is in either of the 2 other stages, then the likeliness of permanent hair removal is less.

Although hair is primarily the same thing from person to person, the way an individual’s hair grows is so unique, owing to many factors including: weight, metabolism, age, genetics and environmental conditions. However, regardless of how these factors influence individual hair growth, hair itself grows through three differing phases:

1. The ACTIVE or ANAGEN growth phase, comprises approximately 85 % of our body hair at any given point in time and can last up to several years. During this stage, the hair shaft and follicle has an affluence of pigment and is most sensitive to the laser light.

2. The REGRESSIVE or CATAGEN phase is the period during which the hair ceases to actively grow but is not yet shed. This phase often lasts a few weeks comprising about 3 – 4% of our total body hair at any given point in time. The laser will work in this stage, but if it is late in this part of the cycle, a new hair might already be coming through and the new hair will not be affected by the laser.

3. The RESTING or TELOGEN phase lasts 5 – 6 weeks, at the end of which the hair falls out and the new hair becomes visible. The new hair mightn’t be affected by the laser because it will not have pigment in it yet, remembering that the laser actually relies on the pigment to find the hair. Approximately 10-13% of our body hair is in this phase at any one time.

So now we understand the growth cycle of hair, it needs to be asked, “Is permanent hair removal actually possible?” The answer is Yes, Laser Hair Removal can definitely provide a level of permanency. As you can see, if a hair in the Active/Anagen stage is revealed to the laser, then that hair will most probably be killed permanently. If a hair that is in either of the other 2 stages is exposed to the laser, then that hair will most probably be killed, but the new hair coming through will still continue to grow.

So to get permanent removal of your unwanted hair, you will more than likely need a number of laser sessions. You could be lucky – your first Laser hair removal session will permanently remove all of your unwanted hair, but the likeliness is that you will need a number of sessions at set intervals to ensure that you get to the hair when it is in the first stage of growth. And that is all there really is to know, permanent Laser Hair Removal is definitely achievable !

This year, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is providing approximately $6 million to fund two studies that will test the viability of both components of a closed-loop system—a glucose sensor and an insulin pump. One is the Continuous Glucose Sensor Human Clinical Trial, and the other is the Artificial Pancreas Consortium. We spoke to Aaron Kowalski, research director for the JDRF Artificial Pancreas Project, about the two studies and what they hope to achieve.

Explain what a continuous glucose sensor is and why it is such an important innovation.

Continuous glucose sensors are glucose monitors worn on the outside of the body. The sensors have a small-needle access site, which is usually positioned in the abdominal region. This allows the device to continually monitor glucose levels. The data that it collects is displayed on a small device about the size of a pager. A continuous glucose sensor enables a person to see glucose trends—whether glucose is headed up or down—before they go too far in either direction. This lets the person avoid bad lows or excessive highs by having a snack or adjusting insulin levels.

The hypothesis is that continuous sensing is going to help people with diabetes achieve better glucose control than they would using only finger sticks, and several studies have shown promising results. By helping people achieve better glucose control, these devices will help reduce diabetes-related complications in the long term. And they will be an essential part of the closed-loop system, or artificial pancreas.

Who makes continuous glucose devices?

Currently two companies have FDA-approved continuous glucose monitors—DexCom and Medtronic—and a third (Abbott) has a device currently under FDA review. The JDRF does not favor one brand of device over another; the Continuous Glucose Sensor Human Clinical Trial uses all of them.

So how is the Continuous Glucose Sensor Human Clinical Trial set up?

Half of the patients will get their normal standard of care, which is intensive management with finger sticks using glucose monitors. The other half will use continuous sensors. That will go on for six months in a randomized fashion. Then the people who are on finger sticks will switch to the continuous sensors. The people on continuous sensors will stay with them. We call that a limited crossover. It will go on for another six months. We expect to enroll about 500 patients total at sites across the country.

What will you be tracking over that year? Changes in glucose control? Changes in A1Cs?

In the first six months, we will see whether the people using continuous sensing have better glucose control. We’ll be looking at A1Cs, but we’ll also be trying to get a good picture of how the sensor affects the incidence of hypoglycemia and glycemic variability (the swings up and down of blood glucose) and other diabetes outcomes, such as severe lows, days out of work or school due to diabetes, etc. In the second six months, we will see if people can sustain any positive outcomes from using the sensor over the longer period of time.

Is the continuous sensor trial linked to the trial of the artificial pancreas?

Yes. The clinical trials operate separately, but they are linked conceptually. You can’t have a closed-loop system without a reliable continuous glucose monitor. You need a continuous monitor that talks to an insulin pump, and that insulin pump has to be able to take the sensor’s readings, then automatically dispense insulin through the inserted port as the body needs it. Like the pancreas, the closed loop would automatically dispense the right amount of insulin at the right time.

These are exciting times for people with diabetes and for researchers. To learn more about the research sites and about the JDRF initiative, go to jdrf.org/artificialpancreas.

Vitamin C to Boost Your Immune system

Posted by admin On September - 29 - 2006

I would like to explain how important vitamin C is and how it relates to women’s health issues. One of the many things we keep hearing from our doctors and also in advertisements is the importance of vitamin C. While I was in the grocery store shopping I noticed that so many food items are fortified with vitamin C. So it is important to point out how important vitamin C is to our body. Vitamin C will help boost our immune systems and it will help to increase the fighting power of our immune system. According to Dr. Bill Sears “vitamin C helps to increase the number of white blood cells in the immune systems army, train them to fight better, and help them form an overall better health plan”. He recommends approximately 2000 milligrams a day. This can be achieved by eating six servings of fruit each day.

Fruit Containing Large Quantities of Vitamin C

-Guava 165 milligrams of vitamin C
-Papaya 87 milligrams of vitamin C
-Strawberries 84 milligrams of vitamin C

-Kiwi 74 milligrams of vitamin C
-Cantaloupe 68 milligrams of vitamin C
-Orange 75 milligrams of vitamin C
-Grape Fruit 42 milligrams of vitamin C

If you increase your intake of Vitamin C it will increase the production of white blood cells while also fighting infection. This inexpensive vitamin will also reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by raising your level of HDL, which is the good cholesterol. Research also shows that people with a higher level of vitamin C have a lower risk of breast, colon, and prostrate cancer.

Want To Breathe Properly? Learn Buteyko

Posted by admin On September - 29 - 2006

Buteyko is a breathing technique that seeks to re-train people with breathing disorders. The program deals with people suffering from asthma or other breathing problems and tries to change their breathing patterns to reduce symptoms of the ailment. When symptoms are reduced, medications too become redundant.

People suffering from sleep disorders, breathing disorders, sinus or hay fever can be retrained to control their symptoms.

With the help of Buteyko, it is possible to reduce or even eliminate the use of medication safely. As with any holistic healing process the breathing patterns used in Buteyko also helps to increase energy levels, thereby making the individual feel healthy and buoyant.

About fifty years ago, Dr. Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko noticed that the more ill people became, the more they needed to breathe in. Bringing the volume of their breath back to normal led to an elimination of symptoms and even helped normalize their discomfort. To put it very simplistically, he said that the more you breathe, the closer you are to death. Conversely, the less you breathe the healthier you get.

To make it effective, Dr. Buteyko developed a method of breathing that allowed people to use a lesser volume of air effectively for all body purposes. In a short span of time, people with cardiovascular diseases, allergies, high blood pressure, immunity problems, chronic fatigue and stress-related problems show drastic improvement. Breath holding and the controlled reduction of ventilation are the twin pillars on which the Buteyko method stands.

Many people believe that the purpose of breathing is to get in as much oxygen as possible. However they are totally ignorant of the need to maintain a balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the body. A body that is depleted of carbon dioxide (as is often the case when we over-breathe) cannot make optimum use of the oxygen supply. Thus the tissues suffer from oxygen depletion. This leads to disease.

Thus there are two kinds of breathing – good breathing and bad breathing. Allergic reactions and breathing problems are some of the common manifestations of bad breathing. The body creates nasal restrictions to restrict the CO2 levels and this appears as sinusitis, nasal polyps, asthma and bronchitis.

According to Dr. Buteyko a healthy individual should be able to hold his breath for forty seconds after a normal expiration. Asthmatics can barely hold theirs for more than 10 seconds. Even people with overt breathing problems cannot stay too long without gasping for air. Since most of us are totally unaware of our breathing processes, we are also unaware of how this pattern changes and how it affects our health.

Many factors contribute to bad breathing. For instance, the lack of exercise or even an excess of it can lead to increased CO2 levels in our body. Even the highly processed food we eat leads to breathing problems. Stress and tension, over wrought emotions are just some other factors that contribute.

By focusing on breathing techniques one is able to purposely induce calm by breathing properly. This helps to calm the nervous system and normalize body functions. The Buteyko system is probably the only form of breath-retraining that teaches people to reduce their air intake while maintaining a relaxed diaphragm. This technique usually needs guidance from a trained Buteyko practitioner. Most practitioners teach breathing techniques over a five day period. Once the technique is learnt, it can be practiced by the individual on his own.

How to Cure Anemia Naturally

Posted by admin On September - 28 - 2006

Those who suffer from Anemia either have a reduced number of red blood cells or a reduced amount of hemoglobin (the component of red blood cells that attaches to oxygen and transports it in the blood). Since there is less oxygen available to the cells in the body, Anemics have less energy to perform normal functions. The most common cause of Anemia is iron deficiency… iron is used to make hemoglobin. Most Anemics are on medication for life. We are interested in fixing the nutritional deficiencies underlying the condition to heal the ailment completely.

Iron is a trace mineral of vital importance to the body. Although there is only about a teaspoon of it in your body at any one time, it is essential in the formation of Hemoglobin, the red pigment of blood. There are two types of iron: Heme and Non-Heme. Now, Heme is more easily absorbed by the gastro-intestinal tract (10-30%) while Non-Heme is only about1-10% absorbed. Heme is available in the tissues of animals. That’s right, the more available source of iron is found in meats and dairy than in plants. But we suggest only obtaining your iron from vegetable sources. Why?

The interesting fact is that despite a less absorbable form of iron, vegetarians are no more likely to suffer from iron deficiency than non-vegetarians. Draper and Wheeler have stated there is no indication of increased prevalence of iron deficiency amongst vegetarians. Anderson found the iron status of long-term vegetarian women to be adequate, despite a high intake of fiber and phytate which INHIBITS the absorption of iron!

In fact, because iron can be stored in the body, too much iron can cause problems. Too much iron consumption leads to the production of free radicals (a molecule with an extra electron that will steal a negatively charged hydrogen electron from DNA, tissues, or organs which causes disease and aging). High levels of iron have also been found in association with heart disease and cancer. The buildup of iron in the tissues has been associated with a rare disease known as hemochromatosis, a hereditary disorder of iron metabolism that causes bronze skin pigmentation, cirrhosis of the liver, diabetes, and heart disorders. All of this leads us to the conclusion that despite animal foods, you should never get your iron from a supplement. First, the pill will not have all of the other organic nutrients (copper, manganese, molybdenum, Vitamin A, and the B complex) necessary to absorb the iron safely. Second, in pills, you will get something like ferrous oxide (oxidized iron: In other words, RUST).

Symptoms:

Weakness, fatigue, overall pallor, dizziness, pale lips and eyelids, depression, pale and brittle nails, and coldness of the extremities

Recommendations:

An all natural whole food supplement can be helpful. organichealthandbeauty.com/vitaforce_p_215-81.html” target=”_blank VITAFORCE™ is extremely abundant in organic iron and has extraordinary blood building properties. Iron is up to 16 times more absorbable if taken with Vitamin C and this is properly balanced naturally in VITAFORCE™. It is also extremely rich in all the other nutrients necessary for healthy blood. If you are anemic, then drink juices rich in chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is responsible for the green pigment in plants (called the “blood” of plants). Chlorophyll has almost the exact same chemical makeup of hemoglobin (less one iron molecule), both are responsible for carrying oxygen in the blood. Since the chemical makeup is almost identical, chlorophyll can quickly and easily be converted to hemoglobin. If the juices are rich in organic iron, then you have all the qualities for a blood transfusion. For example, the fresh organic juice of carrots, beets and beet greens dramatically increases the red blood cell count in the body. Dark leafy vegetables and especially They have extraordinary blood-building properties.Other foods that contain iron are asparagus, bananas, beets, dulse, kelp, whole grains (esp. millet & kamut), leafy greens, raisins, parsley, peas, plums, squash, prunes, purple grapes, broccoli, and yams.
Things to Avoid:

All inorganic supplemental forms of iron; none of the iron supplements use organic iron, so you cannot absorb any of it and it gets pissed away or lodged in your tissues where it can cause disease. Caffeine and tannins (in tea), and calcium inhibit iron absorption. So, avoid coffee and tea. Beer, candy bars, dairy products (milk, cheese, butter, ice cream, etc…), and soft drinks. Additives in these foods interfere with the absorption of iron. Foods containing oxalic acids inhibit the absorption of iron. Eat only in moderate amounts; almonds, cashews, chocolate, cocoa, soda, and most nuts and beans.

Pediatric Integrative Medicine (CAM)

Posted by admin On September - 28 - 2006

Pediatric integrative medicine is the “up and coming” contemporary pediatrics.

Alternative pediatric integrative medicine combines state-of-the-art western medicine with alternative care providing a wide range of treatment options to benefit your child. Founder and chairman of a new section of the American Academy of Pediatrics Dr. Kathi Kemper, who’s written a book called “The Holistic Pediatrician,” is devoted to complementary and alternative medicine.

“We support the mission of the AAP by integrating evidence-based, safe and effective complementary therapies into pediatric practice and educating physicians and families about the research on commonly used complementary therapies,” Kemper stated in a press release. Complementary therapies are used in conjunction with traditional medicine. Holistic medicine is concerned with the care of the whole child — body, mind, emotions and spirit — within his or her family, culture and community. Integrative medicine focuses on wellness and healing of the whole person and concentrates on empowering patients and their families.

The Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine’s (CAHCIM) definition applies to adults and children. “Integrative Medicine is the practice of medicine that reaffirms the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare professionals and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing.”

There is even a Holistic Pediatric Association (HPA) radio talk show for parents, available through the Internet. The show is broadcast on the Voice of America Health and Wellness website www.health.voiceamerica.com every Wednesday at 2:00 PM PST or 5:00 PM EST.

These shows are hosted by Randall Neustaedter, OMD and Lawrence Palevsky, MD..
Dr. Neustaedter is the author of Child Health Guide: Holistic Pediatrics for Parents and Education Director of the Holistic Pediatric Association (HPA). hpakids.org/
Dr. Palevsky is a pediatrician, and president of the Holistic Pediatric Association (HPA) and the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA).

Internationally acclaimed healer, author of “Wheels of Light ” and medicine woman Rosalyn L. Bruyere D. D.( rosalynlbruyere.org/)of the Healing Light Center who regularly teaches and participates in research is now addressing the field of pediatrics. She is making a presentation for the Program for Holistic & Integrative Medicine Wake Forest School of Medicine and the Douglas D Brendle Integrative Medicine Seminars ( besthealth.com/) on “Using Energy Medicine in the Treatment of Pediatric Patients”.

As a pediatric integrative medical specialist as a medical intuitive and distant healer, my CAM work with children and adolescents is done in a Patch Adams manner. Patch Adams known for his clown healing work (as illustrated in the movie portraying his career), created a “happy” environment for his patients that also allowed each individual to feel safe, special and secure with his bedside manner.

According to his website, one of the most radical parts of his vision was that “we wanted all of the activity to be infused with fun.” He would sign a doctor’s order: “Spread joy or chase your wildest dreams.” To this day Patch Adams continues to contributing to change in the international health care system by creating hopsitals that are more sensitive to each patient as an individual. Dr Adams feels “the loudest cry of patients was for compassion and attention, which was a call for time. So initial interviews with patients were three to four hours long, so that we could fall in love with each other. Intimacy was the greatest gift we could give them”.
