The Toothbrush – A Vital Tool

Posted by admin On August - 31 - 2006

The toothbrush is an important usable cleaning instrument, which we use regularly. Most people start their morning with the use of a toothbrush. It is not confirmed when the first toothbrush was invented, however it is supposed that around 3000 BC the first toothbrush came up in the form of a chew stick, which was used by ancient civilians. It was in the shape of a slim stick with a frayed end. Another early form of toothbrush was the bristle toothbrush. It was similar to what we use today, but this toothbrush was made up of solid hog’s hairs connected to a handle made of bamboo or bone. The nylon-bristled toothbrush was introduced in 1938, and was rapidly accepted due to its good oral hygiene quality.

A revolution came in the market of America with the origin of electric toothbrushes in 1960. These toothbrushes were sold and produced on a mass level throughout the country.

Initially, the electronic toothbrush along with charger was invented in 1939 in Switzerland, but it did not come out in the open market until 1960. It was in 1961 when the company ‘General Electric’ came up with the rechargeable cordless toothbrush. The first rotary toothbrush, called the ‘Interplak’ became available to the general public in 1987. It was available in different models and varieties. It was believed that the Interplak was capable to eliminate plaque, and could prevent gingival bleeding better than other manual toothbrushes.

Nowadays, a number of varieties of toothbrushes can be found in the market at a large scale. Toothbrushes are used with fluoride for cleaning. Generally, dentists recommend the use of soft toothbrushes because hard toothbrushes can cause damage to your teeth. Soft bristles are also considered good at eliminating plaque and debris from the teeth. Besides this, dentists recommend the use of a small-handled toothbrush, as it can reach easily at each and every corner of your mouth. Toothbrushes are generally made of synthetic materials.

As there is such a wide variety of toothbrushes available today, this can create confusion for you when buying. Therefore it is necessary to consider that what kind of toothbrush will best suit your teeth. As an alternative, you can also use a powered toothbrush for cleaning your teeth, especially if you experience difficulties during brushing. You should replace your toothbrush within three months.

It is important that you are using a good quality toothbrush and changing it frequently. Undoubtedly, you would not like to have any diseases in your teeth, so by brushing regularly you can maintain healthy teeth as well as an attractive smile.

Beating The Winter Blahs

Posted by admin On August - 31 - 2006

Keep in balance with the season

“Good humor is a tonic for mind and body. It is the best antidote for anxiety and depression. It is a business asset. It attracts and keeps friends. It lightens human burdens. It is the direct route to serenity and contentment. ”
Grenville Kleiser

Are you feeling ‘cabin fever’ and more emotional these days? If so, that is winter for you! It is that time of year when mother nature is in her resting stage with her roots deep in the earth preparing for spring.

During this season the bone chilling, damp and coldness of winter drives us to nest, reflect, eat more comfort foods and go deep within ourselves. With that, we tend to be more sensitive, fully aware of our senses and emotions, and less physically active. Does this sound like you?

According to the Chinese Five Element system, the seasons have a profound effect on our well-being. Each one corresponds to a specific set of influences and dimensions that represent and aid in nourishing the body during each season. Winter corresponds to the element of water and the organs are the kidneys and bladder. These organs govern water metabolism and control the bladder. The kidneys are seen as the foundation of the body, governing the lower part of the body including sexual and reproductive organs. The prominent emotion associated with this season is fear; the ears are the sensing organ; the colors to accentuate are dark and black; and the taste salty and bitter. On top of all that, the seasonal cycle of light and dark can profoundly influence our moods, energy, and health. In fact, in the winter time our metabolism decreases as our body temperatures are challenged by the cold weather. Our appetite naturally increases as the body seeks greater caloric intake to help regulate its temperature within a normal range. Most people recognize this as a craving for warmer, high-fat and high-protein foods. In addition, the body also calls for not only more food but fat, to help insulate us from the cold. This translates to a few extra pounds, so don’t beat yourself up if you find yourself in this situation. It’s normal, and your body’s intelligence working to keep you warm and healthy during the winter season.

The good news is that spring is not to far off! For one, daylight savings kicks off three weeks early this year beginning on Sunday, March 11th, so don’t forget to set your clocks ahead. The other good news is that Groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, did not see his shadow and therefore predicts an early spring.

In the meantime, don’t lose hope. Know that you are feeling what most people do this time of year to varying degrees. There are a few things you can do to help get you through the remainder of winter.

How to keep in balance with winter

1) Consume food that is warming and substantial.
2) Eat more whole grains.
3) Less fruit and more steamed or baked vegetables.
4) Get adequate amount of protein sources.
5) Do more indoor exercises vs. outdoors.
6) Conserve your energy and get plenty of rest.
7) Hydrate. Drink room temperature water or a cup of plain hot water. Very hydrating and soothing to the body.
8) When leaving the house try humming the song, “grab your coat, get your hat, leave your worries on the doorstep, just direct your feet to the sunny side of the street….” Did you know that more than 50% of the heat from your body is lost through your head.
9) Include more bitter(endive, celery, turnip, asparagus, romaine lettuce) and salty (sea salt, sea vegetables, miso, soy sauce) tastes in your diet. Be careful not to overdue it with the salt. These tastes create a sinking feeling and bring energy lower in your body, keeping you warm and insulated from the cold.
10) If one is experiencing SAD(seasonal affective disorder), go on-line and buy full spectrum lights to use in your home.
11) Plan an event or vacation to have something to look forward to.
12) Allow yourself to ‘be’ in a slowed down or nesting state knowing, like mother nature, your body is also preparing for Spring.
13) Get in the kitchen, turn on the music, forget the rules and start cooking! This is the only creative art that ‘feeds you’ literally and figuratively.
14)Lift your spirits and invigorate your body by using some aromatherapy citrus scents like sweet orange, grapefruit, lime, or lemongrass. Use some drops in a bath, diffuser or buy a ringlet to put above a lamp.
15) If your skin and sinuses tend to dry out this time of year, get a humidifier. For sinuses, put a small drop of sesame oil in each nostril and ’sniff’ up’ so it moisturizes your nasal passages.

Air Purifiers – A Ten Point Checklist

Posted by admin On August - 31 - 2006

With the rising numbers of people all over the world who suffer from allergies caused by air borne dirt, germs and microbes (eg. asthma), there is an accelerating demand for purifiers to clean up the air that we breathe.

Even if the increasing levels of dust and dirt in the atmosphere do not cause you medical problems or distress at the moment, you might want to consider the long term picture, and choose to purify the air you breathe before you begin to suffer problems, the effects of which may be very difficult to reverse.
For anyone considering buying any form of air purifier, here are the top ten points that you will need to carefully consider before making your choice:

• Find a unit that guarantees to remove a high percentage of particulates from the air, together with the capability of capturing small sized particles.

• Air flow through volume capacity. Look at the recommended room size of the unit, usually expressed in square feet or square meters.

• Specific health concerns. Consider exactly what substance(s) is it that you are keenest to remove from the air: cigarette smoke, bacteria, or germs?

• Pick a reputable manufacturer. Look for an organization of home appliance manufacturers where you live, for example (eg. in USA, aham.org).

• Indoor factors. What pollutant in particular (cigarette smoke, mold spores, dust, etc.) is it that is affecting your health? Look for a unit that can best eliminate that substance from the atmosphere around you.

• Operating costs. Check the manufacturer’s replacement interval and the filter costs, as replacing filters could represent a significant expense.

• Construction quality. Does the warranty cover internal components? Is the machine listed with an organization that requires standards for quality and safety?

• Ease of use. Make sure that the processes involved in changing, operating, and cleaning the filter are not too challenging or time consuming.

• Warranty. Look for the most comprehensive, long-term warranty that you can find.

• Consider the operating noise. Does the manufacturer claim their unit is “whisper quiet?” Confirm exaggerated claims by requesting operating noise values (expressed in decibels). Quieter units are about 35 decibels. Excessive noise is just another form of pollution, after all!

By following these guidelines, you can expect to find an air purifier that most closely satisfies your own personal requirements, and also those of your family.

Remember, the air that we breathe, no less than the water that we drink, is meant to be clean, healthy and life sustaining, and you should do all that you can to ensure that, whilst this may not be true outdoors, especially in the modern city environment, your home is a refuge from the dirt, grime and dust outside!

Banish Baggy Eyes and Dark Circles

Posted by admin On August - 31 - 2006

Do you want to banish baggy eyes and dark circles around them? Think you need an expensive cream? Plastic surgery? Think again.

Our simple home remedy will cost you virtually nothing and you can have great results. You can really banish baggy eyes and dark circles.

How Did You Get Baggy Eyes? Dark Circles?

The bags and dark circles that you see under eyes can be the result of a number of things. First of all it may be (and often is) an inherited tendency. Next there are just people who are born with darker circles around their eye sockets.

Next they may be just part of the natural aging processes. Lack of restful sleep often results in bags and dark circles, and finally it may be due to environmental factors such as allergies, dehydration and crying.
The truth is, the causes are not perfectly understood.

What is Technically Happening?

Aging causes our skin to get thinner. There is a break down of the lattice work under the skin formed by collagen fibers. This latticework acts to keep the skin tight and elastic.

Then, the thin skin, when seen in places without layers of fat (such as the skull or hands) gives a darker appearance…

With the skin around the eyes thinning, the blood vessels beneath and our own darker shadows of bone to begin to show through.

This may be worse due to genetic pre-disposition, but things like too much UV light and even smoking and worsen the effect.

Also a general lack of sleep or restful sleep is another culprit for baggy eyes and dark circles. It may have a lot to do with blood supply and oxygen in that area.

So, What Can be Done?

You may not be able to completely eliminate baggy eyes and dark circles, but you certainly can reduce them. Here are some real and effective tips to follow:

• Drink plenty of fresh clean water daily and keep yourself hydrated

• Take a 3mg tablet of melatonin (if your doctor agrees) each night, and try to get a more restful sleep

• Stop smoking

• Wear refrigerated eye pack just before going to bed

• Prepare a strong cup of tea with teabags, and then chill the bags with most of the water dripped out. Apply the teabags to closed eyes for 15 minutes during a nap or at the end of a long day.

• Take collagen tablets, but consult your doctor to doses and frequency of such food supplements.

• Consult your doctor if none of the above are helpful for you, as the problem may be related to something else that needs attention.

What you should not do is:

• Do not use Preparation H. It can be very harmful

• Do not buy expensive creams, as they do not work

• Do not just cover the problem with makeup, and forget about it. Try to solve it, not hide it.

• Do not assume plastic surgery is the only option. Leave the option of the knife as a last resort.

Remember, in many cases, its just your genetic disposition, and then not much of anything can eliminate the baggy eyes and dark circles, but certainly, some of the remedies we suggest can really help.

Vitamins and Crohns – How to Select the Right Supplements

Posted by admin On August - 30 - 2006

One of the best ways to maintain a healthy body and avoid malnutrition is to ensure adequate vitamin and crohns supplement treatment. Many studies that have been conducted on crohn’s sufferers have found that the vast majority of those with crohn’s are generally deficient in vitamins A, B, C, D and E. The natural deficiency of these vitamins is likely due to dietary restrictions, medications, and poor nutrient absorption.

Vitamin A – Vitamin A is necessary for a healthy normal immune system function, which is required to maintain a healthy mucous membrane. The skin and mucosal cells that line the digestive tract, urinary tract and airways, create a barrier and are the body’s initial defence against infection. Vitamin A also plays a vital role in immune response and in the proper function of the adrenal glands which control the way we respond to stress.

Vitamin B9 – B9, also known as folic acid or folate, is vital for the production of nucleic acids, proteins that are essential in cell reproduction and separation.
It is thought that a folate deficiency may cause high levels of the amino acid homocysteine, which is believed to play a role in the development of some chronic illnesses. In addition, B9 vitamin and crohns deficiency can cause intestinal damage and trigger diarrhea.

Vitamin C – Vitamin C is needed to convert folate into folinic acid (its active form). It is also an essential requirement for the formation of collagen, which the body needs for proper growth, maintenance and development. When taken with bioflavonoids (a vitamin-like nutrient that helps the body to absorb vitamin C), vitamin C can help alleviate inflammation and may even help prevent the formation of fistulas in crohn’s sufferers.

Vitamin D – Vitamin D is essential for maintaining healthy bones and cartilage and helps the body absorb calcium. Many crohn’s sufferers experience bone loss. Adding the D vitamin and crohns calcium supplement can improve bone mineral density, and help prevent and control the development of osteoporosis and osteopenia.

Vitamin E – Vitamin E is primarily an antioxidant. This means it helps protect tissues and cells from the damaging effects of oxidation, which can lead to the formation of many diseases. Vitamin E, in particular, has been found to prevent scarring that can occur from crohn’s disease.

How are vitamins taken? Most vitamins and mineral supplements are available in caplet, tablet, chewable tablet, and powder form.

Remember to read all instructions concerning recommended dosages before taking vitamins. Also, be sure to consult your health care provider about the vitamins for crohn’s treatment you are interested in, or intend to use, prior to taking them.

How to choose quality vitamin and crohns supplements – Not all vitamin supplements are the same, so you should never make the assumption that all products on the market are made with identical ingredients and will provide you with equal nutrients. To ensure a quality vitamin product keep the following in mind:

• The ingredients used should be all or primarily from organic sources
• Artificial ingredients should not have been part of the manufacturing process.
• Nutrients should have been tested for contamination and toxic substances
• If you have certain food sensitivities make sure that ingredients such as wheat, corn and yeast are not listed in the ingredients.
• All vitamin supplements should have an expiration date
• There is no regulation of vitamin supplements. This means the dosage claim noted on the label may not be the same as what actually exists within each pill, tablet, etc.

Therefore, it is in your best interest to get in touch with the lab that produces the particular vitamin supplement to find out how their products are tested. A reputable supplement producing lab will answer all of your questions.

Finally, keep in mind that the best way to obtain quality vitamin and crohns treatment is through your health care provider.

Natural Healing

Posted by admin On August - 30 - 2006

The majority of people’s bodies are toxic, malnourished and emotionally damaged to the degree that one wonders how they are able to function as well as they do. I assure you, as a Life Coach and Metaphysical Healer, I am witness to the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual dis-ease. Eric Berne, PhD, What Do You Say After You Say Hello, 1973 and M. Scott Peck, PhD, The Road Less Traveled, 1978 reported that only four percent of the population is basically healthy. My observations concur with Berne and Peck’s research. I am emphasizing this because many of you reading this will think, “She isn’t referring to me.” Yes, I am, unless you are in the basically healthy 4%. If you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter drugs on a frequent or continuous basis you are in the 96% of basically unhealthy people.

Conditions on this planet are such that adequate nutritional food is rare, healthy water is rarer and clean air is nonexistent, unless you live in a rural area. Even in rural areas air quality is questionable, because acid rain travels many miles.

Unfortunately, the majority of people have been brainwashed by political and corporate leaders, medical and pharmaceutical companies that there is a medical cure for every ill and that the environment and poor quality food has little part in creating poor health.

In addition, emotional dynamics are poor for children in most families, regardless what counseling authorities posit. For example: twenty-two states allow corporal punishment in school, in spite of the plethora of studies clearly outlining the ill effects of hitting children. A survey by Harvard Medical Center, CT. revealed that 67% of children are spanked on average, once a week

If poor emotional family dynamics were not the case, drug and alcohol abuse would not be so widespread, nor would domestic violence and other social problems. It is undeniable that the majority of people have become conditioned to believe political and corporate leaders, medical and pharmaceutical companies have your best interest in mind.

The best path to better health is through your own efforts, such as natural remedies—proven effective in Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Traditional Chinese Medicine and a long list of other preventative and healing practices. Herpes Zoster (Shingles)

Posted by admin On August - 30 - 2006

Herpes zoster or shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox. After the first infection, the virus may remain latent in some nerve fibers and become active again due to stress, pregnancy, compromised immune system, certain drugs or aging. Reactivated herpes zoster affects only one side of the face or body, beginning as a rash and developing into red patches which later become blisters and sores. It can also affect the eye (e.g. corneal inflammation and scarring, conjunctivitis, involvement of the retina and optic nerve).

Signs and symptoms of herpes zoster infection include fever, headache, fatigue, rash, erythematous and sensitive skin, blisters and sores, itching, tingling, burning and pain sensations. Shingles is painful as the virus travels along the nerves to get to the skin, causing damage and inflammation along the way. When the eye is affected, symptoms include redness, dryness and sensitivity to light. Other eye problems may include inflamed eyelids, blurring of vision, corneal inflammation and scarring, glaucoma, cataract, diplopia or double vision and loss of sensation.

Herpes zoster can be diagnosed through physical examination and laboratory tests. Physical examination includes location, description and measurements of sores. Ophthalmoscopes and slit-lamp microscopes examine the eye. Visual acuity and intraocular pressure should also be monitored. Blood tests detect the presence of infection.

Treatment of herpes zoster consists of anti-virals (e.g. Acyclovir), ant-inflammatory medications (e.g. NSAIDS) and topical creams (e.g. Cortisone). The blisters should not be forced to open. The sores may be dried by compressing them with vinegar (diluted with lukewarm water) for at least ten minutes twice a day. As crusts and scabs leave the skin dry, petroleum jelly may be applied to the area. The blisters and sores usually heal in two to four weeks but may leave scars. Ocular herpes zoster is managed with eye drops and/or ointments.

Discomfort may persist even after the sores have healed. Postherpetic neuralgia refers to pain that may continue up to six months as nerves heal very slowly.

Simple Ways To Stop Snoring

Posted by admin On August - 30 - 2006

If you have a snoring problem, most likely your sleep has not been as perfect as you might want it to be. You may find yourself not getting a whole lot out of your sleep, and you start off wrongly with a bad mood early in the morning. Then you look at your partner beside you, who then gives you a sarcastic smile – as if saying: “yeah, you snored again, honey!” – making you realize that you jeopardized and disturbed your partner’s sleep all through out the night as well.

There are simple ways to stop snoring – and you can easily subscribe to these without hassle. What these require mostly is your dedication, will and commitment to stick on these ways. Simple as they seem, keeping at it at all times would pose to be a more difficult undertaking that you will ever demand upon yourself. Below is your guide to the simple ways to stop snoring:

Be healthy and active. Have an exercise program and schedule it so that you are most likely to adhere to it and not give excuses for not showing up to the gym.

Meditation Exercises. Yoga and tai chi will not only make you fit, these will teach one to relax despite how stressful the situation is.

Have enough sleep. A good night’s sleep will improve your health.

Eat and Drink healthy. A good rule to follow is to take in natural foods. If these are not available, choose alternatives that are close to its natural and raw form. Most nutrients are retained if the food does not undergo artificial processing.

Quit Smoking. Smoking affects the natural lining of the tissues on your throat. It also contributes to nasal congestion.

Limit alcohol intake. Avoid alcohol intake especially when you are about to sleep. This has shown to contribute to the snoring problem.

Pamper Yourself. Go to a sauna; have a massage. It will improve your blood circulation, lowers stress levels, relaxes your muscles, and make you healthier.

Above are the simple ways to stop snoring. The tools you need are your determination to stick to your plan, and most importantly your execution of the plan. Being determined to do an act is one thing, but executing it is another. Again, these are simple ways to stop snoring, but your success depends on what you decide at each moment and what you do at each moment.

Nutrition for Winter Sports

Posted by admin On August - 29 - 2006

Let’s start with some definitions:

Winter sport is a sport commonly played during the winter season on snow or ice.
The temperature of the winter sports performed outdoors ranges from – 25 to 10° C, while the temperature of those performed indoors averages 5° to 10° C.

Snow and ice are better as you get higher. This means training and competition for many winter sport athletes commonly requires some degree of exposure to higher altitude often 2,600 – 3,500m.
The most important nutritional factors to consider for winter sport are the cumulative effect of cold and altitude – leading to increased energy expenditure, greater reliance on blood glucose and muscle glycogen, and exacerbated fluid loss.

Any form of exertion in the cold may increase energy requirements. Living and/or training at altitude increases your need for adequate iron stores in order for your blood to adapt. In addition, fluid requirements are higher in the cold compared to temperate environments. Why? Because cold air contains less water than warmer air, so cold exposure leads to a small but significant increase in respiratory water loss – each time you breath out, you become a little more dehydrated. In addition, cold temperatures can result in an impaired thirst response, which means you don’t realise you need to drink as often as you should.

It’s worth bearing in mind that for international cross country events longer than 15 kilometres, sport drinks are provided for all athletes – so if you plan to ski or board more than 15 k in a day, you should be making sure you have a similar level of provision that is not just fluid but also glucose and protein based.

Majorie and Fear

Posted by admin On August - 29 - 2006

Marjorie was sitting nervously in her big, soft armchair and peered anxiously out her New England style bay window. It was February and it was snowing like it would never end. Mornings were hard for Marjorie, especially around 8:40 because she knew she would have to get going. Anxiety began building around 8:00 because she realized what hassles she’d go through to get out the door. She was especially depressed this morning because her husband, Stan left in a bad mood and was once again disappointed in her. Why couldn’t she be normal like everyone else? Everyone else around her seemed to be doing well. What was wrong with her?

She looked at the small ornate clock on top of the TV. It was now 8:40. She had to get going! All right, she whispered to herself, “Let’s do it!” She went to the bathroom and nervously peered inside. She had to use the bathroom and then wash her hands. “Oh, let me get through this, Lord, so I can get going.” She went inside and began her ritual of washing and rewashing her hands. After washing her hands for about five minutes she then proceeded to wash her elbows and stomach, just to make sure she got all areas clean. It was almost like she was trying to wash away some dark, awful thing from her past. Ten minutes later, she finished.

She then proceeded to put on her heavy winter coat and then check the house. Again, she said out loud, “Lord let me do this so that I can leave!” She checked and rechecked until she could do no more. Exhausted, she reached for her keys and was about to leave when the phone rang. She hated this because she knew that she would have to repeat the rituals all over again. The phone disrupted her thoughts of orderliness compulsiveness. It looked like she would never get out of the house! Another day in paradise, she thought. Just another frigging day in paradise! She began perspiring and her fidgeting increased.

After the phone call from her husband, she proceeded her way once again to the bathroom. She looked down at her hands. They were red, chapped and looked old. She then looked into the bathroom mirror and was shocked at the reflection. Lines and bags under her eyes, hair a muted brown and her expression, one of fear and dread peered back at her. She couldn’t believe the reflection in the mirror. What ever happened to that beautiful woman without a care in the world? How much longer could she continue these insidious rituals? She knew that if she didn’t stop these tedious obsessions, death would soon follow. How often she had thoughts of suicide, several times almost succeeding. She would have to put an end to the rituals and soon. The question was, could she do it?

Her answer laid on top of a beautiful coffee table; an old, but not used much, Bible. It had been months since she turned its pages. Maybe this would be the morning to pick it up and read…
At the door to her door, Jesus stood and waited…..and waited.
