1. Take it one step at a time Start by paying attention to what you eat. Cut back on fat and sweets and add more fruit and vegetables. And Exercise! If you hate to exercise try it for only 15 minutes a day at first, set small EASY goal at first then a 1/2-hour. Keep in mind that while you are exercising you are burning calories and not eating. Also, it will be easier if you chose an activity that you enjoy.

2. Set a goal

Set a deadline to lose the weight and write it down. For example, ‘ By Dec 14/04 I will weigh 150 lbs or less’. Put it somewhere you will see it daily.

3. Give up soda

If you drink a soda or 2 a day you are adding empty calories. If you find it hard to stop completely, cut back at first and drink water instead.

4. Don’t buy junk food

When you go shopping, don’t go on an empty stomach and you will be less likely to buy junk food. Keep your home ‘junk food free’ so you won’t be tempted to indulge.

5. Eat breakfast

Consume most of your calories early in the day and always eat breakfast. Eat less for Lunch and even less for supper. Don’t eat after 8pm and not only will you avoid those added calories but you will sleep better.

6. Give yourself a treat

When you tell yourself that you can’t have something you want it more. Give yourself a treat once a day ( ie. half a cookie) and you won’t feel you are missing out.

7. Eat five or six meals a day

Eating more frequently will keep you from getting too hungry.

So Start moving. Skip TV and the computer and take anywhere form 15 to 30 minutes a day to walk. Grab your MP3 or buy one for 50 bucks. Walk around the block and listen to your favorite tunes. If it’s raining or snowing, walk around the house or just walk in place. Then, slowly rid your house of the junk food and substitute fruit, veggies, and nuts. Eat a healthy breakfast and try not to snack. Once again, there is no simple cure or way to beat the system. If you don’t do this, you will live a shortened life. 1. Take it one step at a time

Start by paying attention to what you eat. Cut back on fat and sweets and add more fruit and vegetables. And Exercise! If you hate to exercise try it for only 15 minutes a day at first, set small EASY goal at first then a 1/2-hour. Keep in mind that while you are exercising you are burning calories and not eating. Understanding The Gastric Bypass Diet

Posted by admin On February - 28 - 2006

Gastric bypass – the newest method of losing weight today – is effective but risky. This method is not for everyone, especially not for those who only want to lose a few pounds. There are several considerations that must be discussed with the doctor before undergoing the procedure. It involves surgery which makes the stomach smaller. To make the stomach smaller, a small pouch that can only hold small amounts of food is made and connected to the lower portion of the small intestine. The patient feels full easily and consumes minimal amount of food. As a result, excess weight is lost quickly. But there are also risks involved, and one of them is nutrition insufficiency. Because of smaller food intake, the patient does not meet required levels of nutrients which results in poor health. For this reason, the gastric bypass diet is formulated.

The surgery causes changes in the shape and size of the patient’s stomach which cause discomfort and other side effects. However, these effects can be lessened by proper diet. Since the stomach is smaller, adjustment in food intake is necessary. Hence, the gastric bypass diet is divided into different phases to accommodate the strength and capabilities of the new stomach. The first phase is the clear fluid diet. This phase usually lasts for a couple of days after surgery. Clear broth, juice, water, non-fizzy soda, and gelatin are allowed in small amounts. The patient usually consumes three ounces every meal. Sugar and other seasonings are kept at minimal levels during this stage to prevent stressing the new stomach.

Three days following gastric bypass, patients are allowed to take a low-fat liquid diet. High-protein drinks like breakfast milk, food drinks, and adult supplement milk are recommended. Doctors also advise taking multivitamins and supplements at this stage to prevent nutrition loss. However, they stress that these must be chewable or in liquid form. The stomach is still in recovery and cannot handle digesting hard tablets and capsules. The low-fat liquid diet lasts for two weeks or until the doctor gives the signal to advance to soft food diet.

The soft diet is also called the puree diet because the food taken during this stage are mostly pureed. Common suggestions include baby food, mashed produce, soft eggs, cream cheese, and smooth gruel. Meats can also be reintroduced in the diet in pate or spreads. Again, emphasis is on the texture. The gastric bypass diet allows patients to eat almost anything as long as it is soft and smooth in texture. Doctors advise to keep food mildly seasoned but flavorful because this stage lasts for two months. Frustration from bland and soft food might make the patient eat foods that the stomach is not prepared to handle.

Regular diet resumes after two months of gastric bypass. This diet includes all the basic food groups but it is advisable to start with protein food to help build stomach muscle. By this time, the stomach is capable of handling differently textured food. Consuming liquids between meals is necessary to help the small stomach digest the food easily. Patients may have to forego rare meats to avoid gastrointestinal complications. Seek the advise of a nutritionist or dietician who can recommend ways to squeeze necessary nutrients in small food amount. Patients should follow the gastric bypass diet because proper nutrition is important whether you have a big or small stomach.

Supplements Tampering

Posted by admin On February - 28 - 2006

People who keep to a healthy diet and active lifestyles don’t really need added supplements and nutrition to sustain their bodies. However, not everybody develops tastes for vegetables or fish or milk which can cause serious deficiencies. Supplements and nutrition in bottles and boxes are necessary for these people. But these supplements are not classified as drugs by the US FDA. They can be brought without prescription like an ordinary grocery item. Convenient, eh? Not really, since this also makes it easier for unscrupulous individuals to tamper and manufacture fake supplements.

Think that you can easily pick out a tampered bottles from the next? The old plastic seal is not a reliable sign of tampering at present. In fact, there are fake supplements and nutrition aids that are confiscated with plastic seals. But don’t panic; there are other ways to detect tampering and fake meds other than by broken seals.

Tampering signs are easily noticeable with the stricter guidelines in packaging. Supplements and nutrition aids, like other OTC drugs, are now required to feature packaging designs that are not easily imitated. These designs run the gamut from special stickers, patterns, illustration, symbols, or logo with special characteristics. These characteristics — holograms, pop-up tops — make it easier to detect if the supplement is a fake. Of course, these tamper tricks require consumers to be familiar with the original design of the box or bottle. Capsule supplements are required to have two safety measures. Aside from the special container features, they are also required to sport special wrappers, inner containers, and per dosage pouches. However, like with all security measures, these are not foolproof. Basic common sense is needed to avoid buying tampered products.

When buying medicine, supplements and nutrition aids, consider the packaging style. Generally, products that only have single anti-tamper feature are easier to fake. These are usually supplements in bottles. Since the bottles are dark, it is difficult to detect tampering. Consider also the kind of anti-tamper feature involved. Plain stickers are easy to duplicate, but those that feature holographic designs are not. Examine the box carefully; anti-tamper instructions are usually printed on it. Be suspicious of products that don’t have this; the manufacturers do not want to encourage vigilance in the consumer. Of course, do not purchase products that lack these packaging traits. Check and examine the contents ASAP. Discoloration, uncharacteristic foul smell, and curdling of contents should be reported immediately. If you had the misfortune of buying a tampered item, return it immediately and get a full medical check-up to detect side effects of the fake supplements.

To be on the safe side, consult your doctor before taking any supplements and nutrition aids. Research about the different makes and familiarize yourself with their appearance. Only through common sense and vigilance can you avoid being victims of tampered supplements and nutrition aids.

Stop Smoking Pill

Posted by admin On February - 27 - 2006

Nicotine is a drug with high addictive properties and it is easy for the body to get addicted to it. Smokers will tell you that it is very difficult to stop smoking , and to complicate matters, smoking is both legal and socially acceptable. It is a daunting prospect to quit smoking and it is important to come up with a plan to stop smoking. Think about the reasons why you want to quit and about the long-term benefits.

A stop smoking pill is used to reduce the craving for cigarettes or to reduce the effect of withdrawal symptoms. Two popular stop smoking pills are Zyban and Wellbutrin. Zyban is actually an anti-depressant pill and it releases endorphins by stimulating the pituitary gland. The endorphins boost energy levels and make a person feel good. Most of these pills use Bupropion hydrochloride to combat withdrawal symptoms.

The normal course runs for over 8 to 12 weeks. Individuals who stop too soon or who take the pill intermittently will not get the benefit from the treatment since its effect is accumulative.

The pill should be taken for at least a week during which you should continue to smoke. You should plan to stop smoking during the second week. If you have not stopped smoking by the seventh week of Zyban therapy, it is unlikely that you will quit during that attempt and Zyban therapy should be discontinued.

Zyban is only available on prescription and should therefore be only taken under medical supervision. There ARE side effects associated with this drug, the most common being dry mouth, insomnia, weird dreams and either an increase or decrease of libido! Other side effects noted are also irritability, anxiety, depression. The problem is that some of these side effects overlap with the withdrawal symptoms of nicotine. It might therefore be difficult to say for certain which effects are caused by the pill and which by the withdrawal symptoms of the tablet.

Other side effects are also skin rashes, feeling spaced out, feelings of aggression. This is especially exacerbated when combined with the intake of alcohol. Since it makes general good sense to stop drinking alcohol while trying to quit smoking this should be taken to heart!

The drug should be avoided by people who are suffering from stomach disorders like anorexia or bulimia. This drug was initially used for treating depression hence it should not be taken by people who are on medication, especially those who are using monoamine oxidize inhibitors for treating depression. Nowadays it seems as if the drug is primarily used to stop smoking. On the AskPatient database Zyban is cited over 200 times for being used as a Stop Smoking pill and only a handful of times for depression.

Based on the descriptions from the experiences of people taking this pill, I would suggest that you rather look towards a more natural way of quitting smoking since the side effects of using this pill looks to be worse than the withdrawal symptoms of simply quitting….

Lastly, if you are really serious about stopping smoking, the best stop smoking aid is the book ‘The Easy Way to stop smoking’ by Allen Carr. This book has a very high success rate and comes highly recommended by everyone who has read it. You cannot lose much by reading the book and it might just do the trick for you.

Antioxidants are important in a healthy diet and lifestyle. Antioxidants can be found in certain foods, or you can take supplements. Most people choose to take supplements in addition to eating healthy to make sure they get the proper amount. There are several different types of supplements you can take to help you get the right amount without causing any damage.

When you get the right amount of antioxidants in your diet it can benefit you in many ways. The first benefit is that it will help keep your cells healthy. When your cells are healthy you can fight off diseases better. If you do get sick, this will help you recover from your illness quicker. It is easier to stay healthy when your cells can fight damage and are healthy too.

Antioxidants also help when you get injured. When you suffer from an injury, antioxidants will help you heal faster. Your injury can be anything from a paper cut to a broken bone. An injury is also likely to be less severe in a person who takes antioxidants than a person who doesn’t.

You may also notice that you are more tired when you have a lack of antioxidants. The right amount of antioxidants makes you healthier, and gives you more energy. Once you start getting the right amount of antioxidants and vitamins in your body you will be able to notice the difference.

There are a couple different types of supplements you can choose from. First you can choose from herbal or natural supplements. When choosing, remember to keep in mind your specific needs. Either one can have benefits for your body. You also need to make sure you are eating healthy to maximize results.

There are synthetic supplements available to you also. Synthetic supplements take time to absorb into your body. You will not see quick results if you choose synthetic supplements. Users have also complained of some bad side effects associated with this type of supplement.

Non Synthetic supplements are another option you have. Non synthetic supplements ten to absorb into the body quickly so you will see fast results. You will not experience the side effects with non synthetic like you do with synthetic either. The non synthetic supplement seems like it would be the way to go.

No matter what type of supplement you decide to try, just keep eating healthy will maximize your results. It doesn’t do any good to take the supplements if you aren’t going to take care of your body by eating right. Just think of all the benefits you can get just from eating right and taking your antioxidants.

How To Treat Acne And Take The Best Acne Skin Care?

Posted by admin On February - 27 - 2006

Since acne is a typical skin condition that affects people all over the world and all skin types, the basis for controlling acne is to practice a skin regimen that would prevent the outbreak altogether. Thus, skin care is an essential and effective way of keeping acne away.

The basis of the skin care process for acne conditions is adopting the habit of taking a gentle wash every morning and every evening and even after a round of heavy exercise. This will not only make you feel cool on the face but also unclog the pores on the skin surface. Also, it is necessary to make a close study of your hair.

Especially in the case when your hair have a tendency to become oily. You must adopt the habit of daily shampooing to prevent the oil from coming on the forehead and causing acne to attack the facial skin.

In the same way, when on a holiday or when working outdoors, you must avoid the risk of sunburn or the luxury of a suntan. Only recently have medical analysts realized that not only do such practices cause acne conditions, they also processes the conditions that cause skin cancer. Thus, a safe way out is to avoid the tanning-sunburn routine altogether and take effective skin protective gear and lotions and applications to prevent the harsh effects of the sun from falling on the skin and causing acne.

When going out for a special date in the evenings or even when you are getting dressed for a day at work, you must scrupulously avoid make-up that is oil-based. Also, make-up on the face while at work is going to remain for quite a few hours. So, it is very necessary to take proper skin care daily and prevent acne occurrence. The best bet for acne skin care is to choose products that are noncomedogenic as such products do not promote the formation of closed pores and thus eliminate the danger of clogged pores, the most common problem leading to acne conditions.

For men folk, who have to look presentable and smart at the workplace and who need to take a close shave prior to going under the shower, it is necessary to soften the beard before putting the razor to the face. This will help the skin remain smooth and not break into acne. Also, the acne-hit skin can be smoothly shaven over if the surface is soft and the razor can glide freely and gently over the surface.

Thus acne skin care is a matter of closely watching for signs of danger surfacing on the face and also preventing such signs from attacking the skin. This dual advantage can be gained by taking proper skin care precautions to avoid acne conditions.

Tips On Improving Your Memory

Posted by admin On February - 27 - 2006

Have you ever castigated yourself for failing to remember almost everything that would have made your life better? Like that one occasion when you just stared at your boss’ wife while she was talking to you, just because you forgot that she was the Number One man’s wife? This cost you your promotion and would have caused you your job if not for some saving graces like your former job performance rate.

Or what about that day when you were supposed to make a product presentation to a very important client but you forgot all about it and took a leave of absence? Luckily, your client called up your office to cancel the appointment because she was sick.

But don’t kill yourself first. You’re not getting dumber or older; it’s just that you have failed to develop good memory skills that would have made you remember these things. As experts say, there is no good or bad memory; only unorganized thoughts.

A poor memory is equal to poor recollection of things. If you keep forgetting things, then don’t blame your memory because it’s not the culprit. What you should blame is the little or lack of attention you place on things.

Most people, at one time or another, have experienced memory loss. It is synonymous with forgetfulness or what others refer to as being scatterbrained. To solve this problem, you have to realize that your inability to recall is caused by other things like retention problems, being overworked, information overload and stress.

There are people who are plain slow in recalling things, not because they are stupid but because they do not practice their recalling skills. It’s all a matter of getting the right skills for recollection.

A person who is overworked is also prone to forgetting things, particularly trivial things that may be related or unrelated to their work. Because of too much work, you have no choice but to focus your attention on more important things like the work at hand.

The media revolution is responsible for bombarding us with information. Often, people get information overload. There’s just too much information going on in our heads that we tend to forget the things that matter most.

There are several things we encounter in our daily lives that are called memory tasks. Among these are names (of family and friends, of people we meet and of people we do business with), birthdays, dates (like when do we have to go to the doctor for check up), anniversaries and phone numbers.

A good memory will help improve your status in life. It will come in handy both in your personal life and in your business dealings. Do you know that most successful people are the ones who can easily remember things like names?

And yet, a name is one thing that we always forget. Remembering names is one of the most important assets we can have, whatever job we are in. It may be a cliché but it is true that his or her name is the sweetest word that can be said to a person. Experiment on this by asking for the names of salesladies, or the doctor’s secretary and then call them by their first names. The next time you visit them, you will surely be treated like a friend.

To be good in recalling names, listen attentively whenever a person is introduced to you. Then repeat his or her name, and mentally connect the person’s name to an object or event familiar to you. Link the name to a funny thing or event, the better the chances of recall.

We discussed ways to improve your memory in previous chapters, however this is another tactic that is a bit different. This strategy for recalling information is through the use of “mnemonics.” Mnemonics is a memory tool or device that aids the memory in recalling information. Mnemonics can be used through our imagination. It means associating things by its size, shape, color or smell. You can also create your own mnemonics by connecting and clashing images in your mind.

If you often forget numbers like your bank account, then it would be best to create a mnemonic for it. Associate the numbers of your bank account with numbers that are significant to you life. Like if the first numbers of your bank account is 05993, and you happen to be born in May, then you can remember the first two numbers by associating it with your month of birth. The double nine is easier to associate with nine twins, and three with your house number.

The Man Who Sold His Eye

Posted by admin On February - 26 - 2006

Ivan is a middle aged man who lives in central Russia. He is a construction worker who loves his work, but his pay is barely enough to supports a family of four. His oldest daughter is extremely intelligent and begs her father to send her to college so she can learn to be a doctor. But due to the high costs of a medical education, this is not affordable. Ivan loves his daughter very much, and would do almost anything to send her to medical school. He even tried working at a second job, but there still wasn’t enough money.

While Ivan was reading the newspaper he came across an ad offering a large sum of money for a kidney donor. He answered the ad, and latter had a meeting with a doctor and lawyer. After a thorough medical examination, they were prepared to give Ivan 10,000 American dollars, but it would have to be for a kidney plus the cornea of one eye. Ivan thought of the pleasure he would have if he could have a doctor in the family, and he agreed, the operation was done soon afterwards. Ivan was left blind in his left eye, but he felt he had made the correct decision. Working at his job would now be more difficult, but he could still do good work.

Ivan’s daughter was given a partial scholarship at a major medical college in Moscow, and the rest of the cost was paid for by the money Ivan gave her. Five years later she graduated with full honors as a cancer specialist. Today she has a private practice in New York City where has saved the lives of many of her cancer patients. She never forgot what her father did for her, and paid the costs of the whole family coming to America.
Ivan is still a proud man, and often looks into the mirror to remind him of his noble sacrifice.

The sale of body parts has provoked a bad image. It is looked upon by many as a desperate way of making money; and many people think it should be outlawed. But body parts might be all a person has to offer in exchange for the money they so desperately need. Unless the people of the world are able to provide an alternative to the person that is ready to sell their body parts, the people of the world should keep silent. There might come a time when money is desperately needed by them, and those that protest most, would gladly sell their body parts to get it.

I Can’t Kick Coffee, I Get Such A Headache

Posted by admin On February - 26 - 2006

Did you know that Coca-Cola started life as a headache remedy?
Surprised? Most people associate caffeine with causing headaches when they stop drinking coffee – and that is true. But it can also treat headaches.

I’m confused already. How can it do both?

Let’s start at the beginning. Caffeine is actually a stimulant drug that works on the central nervous system. The World Heath Organization considers caffeine to be safe and says that it has no resemblance to addictive drugs that can wreak havoc in peoples’ lives. People call it ‘addictive’ because it can cause symptoms if you stop drinking it. Used properly, it can make you more alert, less tired and it can even help with muscle co-ordination.

Caffeine to be found in every-day medication

If you ever read the small print on boxes of over-the-counter headache remedies and prescription medications, you will see that caffeine is a common ingredient. Caffeine added to some painkillers can make them 40% more efficient in getting rid of headaches – which is a huge effect.

It can also get your headache under control more quickly as it helps the medication to be absorbed into the body faster. These benefits mean that less of the medication need to be taken – which lowers the chance of side effects and even potential drug addiction.

Migraine coming on? Have a coffee.

Many migraine sufferers have discovered that they can keep a migraine at bay by having a coke or a cup of coffee, at the first sign of one. This works because much of migraine pain is caused by enlarged blood vessels pressing on the nerves surrounding them. One of the actions of caffeine is to constrict blood vessels. The effects of caffeine can be felt within half an hour and can last for between three and five hours.

This all sounds great! So whats bad about caffeine?

Caffeine is a stimulant so it can be a great pick-me-up but it can also drop you back down again – especially if you take your coffee with sugar. Coffee can avert a migraine – but one of the worst things that a migraine sufferer can do is to drink large amounts of sugary coffee on an empty stomach. It can send your blood sugar levels soaring and that in itself can bring on a headache. It helps to combine it with food, drink decaf or cut down the sugar.

Caffeine is also a diuretic. Research has found that migraine sufferers benefit from increasing their magnesium levels, but caffeine may be getting rid of it as fast as you’re putting it in.

The dangers of hidden caffeine

People often have difficulty sleeping when they’ve drunk too much coffee. But what if you haven’t over-indulged? Don’t forget that caffeine can also be found in tea, chocolate and other soft drinks – and don’t forget those painkillers. It can all add up.

I want to give up caffeine but won’t I get a withdrawal headache?

A person has to intake at least 15 grams of caffeine each month in order to suffer from a caffeine withdrawal headache. So if you drink 4-6 cups of coffee a day, you could get the headache.
The average daily consumption of caffeine in America is 200-300mg – that’s 2-3 cups. So if you fall into this category you should be ok.

The best method of cutting caffeine out all together is a gradual reduction over a period of time.

So caffeine is good and bad for my headaches…

Yes, it is. You really have to find what works for you. People react differently to different amounts too. The only way to find out is to experiment.
