To parent’s dismay, baby acne is very common. Baby acne usually appears as small whiteheads on the infant’s cheeks, chin and forehead. The hormones that are transferred from mother to baby at birth and with breastfeeding can sometimes cause baby acne annoying but painless condition.
Babies could have breakouts as early as 2-3 weeks after birth. Usually the acne starts between three and four weeks of age, but sometimes it can even be present in newborns.
The maternal hormones that are passed from you to the baby at the end of the pregnancy could also be the cause of your baby’s acne. When a baby is born with infantile acne, the period of which it will hang on is from 2 weeks to 2 months. Worst case scenario makes it possibly till 6 months on the infant. Baby acne usually occurs on the baby’s cheeks, forehead, chin, and even the back. These are common irritants that can cause skin irritation to your baby: saliva, spit-up milk, soap, and clothing that has been washed in strong chemical detergent.
Contact with an oil substances such as petroleum oil or mineral oil can cause baby acne. If you are taking certain medications while nursing, or if your baby is taking some medications, this may cause a breakout. As with adolescent acne, the acne condition can be caused by a skin irritation, certain medications, or by a hormonal change.
Wipe any food, drinks, or saliva that may drip off from your baby’s mouth as this may worsen baby acne. Baby acne can be prevented, be sure that you are not using strong detergents in washing your baby’s clothes. It is understandable but the only thing that parents can do is wash the baby with gentle or mild soap and treat the baby’s clothes with good quality detergent. Some detergents may contain harsh chemicals that can aggravate baby skin.
Milia are little bumps that are unrelated to acne and they will disappear on their own within a few weeks. Whiteheads are small bumps, either white or flesh-colored, that are caused by blocked pores. Acne is not the only thing that can give the appearance of pimple to your baby’s skin. If your baby’s breakout looks more like a rash, it may be eczema. Symptoms of eczema include scaling and blisters. Eczema is a type of skin inflammation and is more serious than acne.
Do not put any oil or lotion on the infantile acne on the baby. If infantile acne does not reside after 6 months, do seek doctor’s advice as this is not a common among infantile acne. Treating baby acne is more about what you should not do rather than what you should do. You should be alarmed if your baby’s acne problem lasts for more than six months.
Wash your baby’s face with water and some mild baby soap once a day. Avoid putting any creams, lotions or oils on your baby’s skin. These products can also irritate acne. Let the acne progress on to the end, otherwise the baby’s system may struggle to remove all the excess hormones. Some think that acne is the baby’s skin is simply going through a cleansing process, as the baby’s system cleanses itself of the unwanted hormones.
There may be special occasions when you choose to use make up to conceal your baby’s acne. Your baby’s skin is very sensitive and make up only add irritation to this sensitive area. Be sure to purchase a organic, chemical free concealer that is made for sensitive skin and use a product that matches your baby’s delicate skin tone when putting make up your baby

Whenever you are hospitalized for any reason, you or a family member should write down all of the diagnoses made during the hospital stay. It is not uncommon for new diagnoses to come to light during a hospital stay for a completely unrelated reason, especially in those individuals who do not see a physician regularly.
These days, insurance companies mandate efficient, relevant hospital care. If a person is admitted for IV fluids due to dehydration, the insurance company is not going to be pleased if the doctor undertakes a big diagnostic work-up for minor conditions, such as mild anemia. Since in most instances, this type of work-up can be done safely in an outpatient setting, the insurance company may refuse to pay for any day in the hospital simply spent running tests. When the patient’s major illness improves, it is generally expected that he will be discharged home, and those issues that are not deemed critical will be addressed by his private physician in the outpatient setting.
If, by chance, your private physician is not the doctor who takes care of you in the hospital, there may be a significant lag before he receives a copy of the synopsis of events which occurred during your hospital stay. This typed synopsis, called the discharge summary, contains the highlights of the hospitalization, including which tests were done and their results, and each diagnosis and its treatment.
Unless you specifically request that your primary care doctor be sent a discharge summary, he may not automatically receive a copy, and he does not have the legal right to request it on your behalf. You must sign a ‘release of records’ form authorizing the hospital to mail or fax him this information if it was not requested while you were actually in the hospital. If your next appointment happens to be late in the afternoon, chances are the hospital’s medical records department will be closed, and your doctor will not have immediate access to this information. As a result, you may experience an avoidable delay in care and incur additional charges if there is a need for you to make another appointment once the discharge summary is received.
Upon discharge from the hospital, you will probably receive a general discharge instruction sheet, and you should add this to your medical journal. However, this sheet is often very basic, and does not contain a lot of detailed information, so it is wise to stop by the hospital’s medical records department on your way home to sign a release which would enable you to receive a copy of the discharge summary, once it is dictated and typed.

Many people believe you need to train with a variety of
weights and reps in order to maximize your muscle building
progress. I believe that you can find the appropriate rep
number for your muscles and it is best to stick with that
range most of the time.
However, in weight lifting, the mental aspect of bodybuilding is also extremely important. And some people will get more out of their workout when their training includes some variety and they are always feeling fresh and challenged. After all, it doesn’t matter that your weight training routine is perfect if you get bored with it and stop training.
With the power mass bodybuilding weight lifting program,
it is very important to keep a training log. You need to keep track of you weight lifting exercises, weights and reps you perform at each workout. Your goal during this weightlifting program will be to increase either the weight you use or the number of reps you perform – every workout, or at least every other workout, for the length of the program.
If you’re a newsletter subscriber (if not, I suggest you become one – see below for a free ebook), you know that I stress the importance of recuperation. If you overtrain,
you won’t get stronger, or bigger, and your training progress will cease.
Since overtraining varies from person to person, it’s extremely important to keep track of everything in your weight lifting program so that you can make appropriate and systematic changes so you reach your muscle building goals.
Some people can work each muscle group two times a week and make great progress, while others do best with one workout per week. And this changes as you go from a beginner weight lifter, to an advanced one.
As you get stronger, you need more time to recover from the stresses you place on your body in your weightlifting workouts. When you start out, you may be able to work each muscle group three times per week. Eventually, in order to keep making progress, you might be able to work each muscle group only once per week.
The idea of a power mass weight lifting routine is to focus on a compound exercise for each muscle group. Such weight lifting exercises include the following:
* Bench Press
* Squat
* One Arm Dumbbell Row
* Deadlift
* Dumbbell Upright Row
* Dip
Then you follow the compound weight training exercises with isolation movements such as flyes for chest, lateral raises for shoulders or machine pullovers for the back.
In this power mass weight lifting routine, you perform the compound exercises first, for low reps, and then perform the isolation movements for higher reps.
For the compound movements, make sure to warm up properly. Your rep scheme should include these sets. For example, you might do five sets of the following rep scheme – 15, 8, 6, 4, 3. The first two sets of this weightlifting program should be light, and only used to warm the muscle and prepare yourself mentally for the final three sets, which are much heavier.
On the isolation movements, keep the reps in the 8 – 12 range for a couple of sets.
Keep in mind that a weight training program is the best way to build muscle mass but it’s also the best way to lose fat, completely change the shape of your body, and keep the fat off. Weight lifting is much more effective for fat loss than aerobics or dieting alone.

Are you ready to lose weight but aren’t sure how to start? Worry no more. Follow our five easy steps to weight loss today. No more ’starting tomorrow’, no more waiting til Monday and no more looking for the perfect diet. No more fad diets that cost bushels of money and don’t work. Follow these simple and effective steps and you’ll get started losing weight today, and keep it off tomorrow.
1. Ask why?
Every time you start to eat or drink, ask yourself one word: Why? Why am I eating this? Am I hungry, tired, bored, stressed, lonely? The correct answer is simple: hunger. If you’re not hungry, don’t eat. Figure out what you need to do to satisfy that emotion: Take a nap, read a book, yell at your boss, call a friend — just don’t eat if you’re not hungry.
2. Carry a note book and pen
Every single thing that you swallow should be written in your notebook, preferably as soon as you swallow it. If you finish your daughter’s leftover Pop-Tart at breakfast, write it down. Sample a cookie at the office? Write it down. Just a “taste” of the stew you’re making for dinner? You’ve got it: Write it down! Writing down what we eat and drink forces us to be aware of what we’re putting in our mouth. It also gives us an easy way to track our intake and decide what changes we want to make.

3. Eat to lose
That’s right, if you skip meals you won’t lose weight. Why not? Because then you’ll get so hungry that you snack, or eat more than you want to, or end up feeling miserable and quit right away. Everybody needs to eat and deserves to eat three meals per day. Snacks, too (if, of course, you can answer #2 correctly first). And forget those skimpy little diet meals. They just leave you feeling hungry and unsatisfied. A meal should include whole grains, fruit and vegetables, protein and even a small amount of fat.
4. Remember your favourite things
If you’ve ever tried to completely avoid your favorite food, then completely lost control and devoured the entire bag of cookies, you know what I’m talking about. Stuck on chocolate? Eat one delicious, exquisite piece of high-quality chocolate every evening. Savor that chocolate. Sit down, relax, and do nothing but enjoy the flavor, texture and experience of eating the chocolate. Eat slowly, enjoying every bite. And whatever you do, don’t feel guilty. A small portion of your favorite food will keep you satisfied and happy — and losing weight.
5. Find a part of your body that moves and exercise it
Everyone can move something. If you have bad knees you can still exercise your arms or even do water exercises in a pool. Take up line dancing or karate. Walk the dog in the morning before work, take the kids for a bike ride after school, or listen to favorite music while using your treadmill. Even housework can become exercise if you move vigorously enough. Turn vacuuming into a race, wash windows with plenty of elbow grease, or scrub flours until you work up a sweat. There simply are no excuses for not moving. Every day. Monday through Sunday. Start with five minutes and add 1-5 additional minutes every week until you’re moving for at least 60 minutes every day. You can spread the activity times apart if you want: vacuum for 10 minutes in the morning, take a brisk 15-minute walk at lunch, ride bikes with your sweetie after dinner for 30 minutes and carry out garbage (at a fast clip) for 5 minutes. You’ve done it!

Headaches can be a nuisance. In addition to being really painful, headaches can actually prevent you from thinking straight and keep you from doing your daily chores.
Headaches can occur two or more times a week and may even last for several months. And because, it can severely affect work attitude, companies lose millions of dollars from employees who fail to meet their production capabilities.
The most common type of headache, the tension headache, involves mild to moderate pain in the head area. Sometimes, the pain may even reach the scalp, the temples and the neck, often accompanied by tightness in the muscles of these body parts.
Unlike migraine headaches, which may occur in a localized area and in a longer duration, tension headaches are less severe and less long lasting. It however occurs more frequently and with no warning signs. People suffering from tension headaches will often feel tightness in their heads. These headaches are often exacerbated by physical and environmental factors such as noise, heat, light and other sensorial triggers.
Tension headaches can occur to anybody. Whatever your gender is, no matter how old you are, you can have one of those debilitating headaches. Still, these are most common in teens and adults as these are the stages where there is much stress and physical changes in the body.
There is a variety of reason why tension headaches occur. Specialists believe that the headaches happen when the muscles in the neck, head and scalp contract or are constricted. One cause of this is dislocation of the muscle area such as when a person spends hours not moving their heads or putting the head at an awkward angle.
Other possible causes of frequent headaches are stress, anxiety and even depressive conditions. Activities such as the use of the computers or the microscope can also contribute as fatigue in the eyes can also cause pain in the head. Another reason for headaches is coldness or extremely low temperature that the person is not used to. Alcohol abuse, excessive smoking, excessive drinking of caffeine, and overexertion can also cause headaches.
Other possible reasons are medical-related such as nasal congestion, colds, flu, and sinusitis. It is also possible that headaches may be a manifestation of underlying problems in the brain such as lesions and constriction in the veins. It is important that you consult with a doctor in case you feel that your headache is becoming worse.

Ayurveda sees food and spices as medicinal substances and good digestion as one of the main factors to optimal health. This is why it places great emphasis on proper food combining and on the concept of shad rasa, or six tastes. These six tastes —sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent— should be present in balanced proportions in the diet. Understanding them and how they relate to our individual constitution can help us make better choices to promote and maintain health.
According to Ayurveda, we are born with a unique constitution, which is an individual combination of the three doshas, or principles that govern the function of our bodies on the physical, mental and emotional levels. These three energies are vata, pitta and kapha. Disease is caused by an imbalance of any of the doshas and by the presence of ama, or toxic food byproducts (food that hasn’t been totally digested).
Vata is the subtle energy associated with movement. It governs respiration, circulation and elimination, as well as the pulsation of the heart and motor neuron impulses. When aggravated, it can cause disorders such as flatulence, constipation, tremors, spasms, asthma, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, as well as many neurological problems.
Pitta represents the fire element in the body. It governs digestion, absorption, assimilation, nutrition, metabolism and body temperature. Pitta type of disorders include hyperacidity, ulcers, all sorts of skin eruptions, chronic fatigue, Crohn’s disease, colitis and numerous inflammatory problems.
Kapha is the energy that forms the structure of the body and provides lubrication to the joints and organs. Out of balance, kapha can cause problems such as obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, edema, asthma, tumors and a variety of congestive disorders.
According to Ayurveda, the best preventive medicine and support of the natural healing process is a diet and lifestyle specific to the constitutional needs of the individual and in line with the seasons and cycles of nature.
Because of their qualities and taste, foods that tend to increase a certain dosha may aggravate it and likewise, foods that decrease that dosha will pacify it and normalize its functions. Vata pacifying foods will have more sweet, sour and salty tastes and less of excessively hot, bitter and pungent tastes. Pitta pacifying foods will be more sweet, bitter and astringent and less sour, salty and pungent. Finally, kapha pacifying foods will be more pungent, bitter and astringent and less sweet, salty and sour. A quick overview of the six tastes can give us an idea of what types of food will aggravate one dosha or the other.
Sweet taste is present in foods such as sugar, milk, rice, wheat, dates, maple syrup and licorice. Its qualities are usually oily, cooling and heavy. In moderation, it promotes the growth of plasma, blood, fat, muscles, bones, marrow and reproductive fluids. In excess, sweet produces many disorders in all doshas. Sweet foods can cause colds, heaviness, loss of appetite, obesity, abnormal muscle growth, lymphatic congestion, tumors, edema and diabetes.
Sour taste is present in foods like citrus, sour cream, yogurt, vinegar, cheese, lemon, unripe mangoes, green grapes and fermented food. Its qualities are liquid, light, heating and oily, and it has anabolic action. In moderation, sour foods are refreshing. They stimulate the appetite, improve the digestion, energize the body and nourish the heart. In excess, this taste can cause hyperacidity, ulcers and perforations. Its fermenting action can be toxic to the blood and cause skin conditions like acne, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, boils and edema, as well as burning sensations in the throat, chest, heart, bladder and urinary tract.
All salts, seafood and sea vegetables are examples of salty taste. Salty taste is so strong that it can easily nullify the effect of all other tastes. It is heating, heavy and oily. In moderation, it is laxative and can lessen spasms and pain in the colon. Like sweet and sour, it is anabolic in action. It promotes growth and maintains water electrolyte balance. It stimulates salivation, enhances the flavor of food and aids the digestion, absorption and elimination. Too much salt in the diet makes the blood viscous and thick, can cause hypertension and aggravates skin conditions. Heat sensations, fainting, wrinkling and baldness may be due to excess salt, as well as edema, water retention, ulcers, bleeding disorders, skin eruptions, hyperacidity and hypertension.
Pungent taste is present in foods like hot peppers, black pepper, onions, garlic, ginger and asafoetida. Its qualities are light, drying and heating. In moderation, it improves digestion, absorption and elimination, stimulates circulation, breaks up clots, and kills parasites and germs. In excess, it may cause sexual debility, choking, fainting and fatigue. If it leads to a pitta aggravation, it can cause diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, peptic ulcers, colitis and skin conditions. If it provokes vata, it can cause tremors, insomnia and muscle pain.
Examples of bitter taste are bitter melon, turmeric, dandelion, aloe vera, rhubarb and coffee. It is the taste most lacking in the North American diet. Its qualities are dry and light. It promotes the flavor of all tastes, is antitoxic and kills germs. Bitter helps to relieve burning sensations, itching, fainting and obstinate skin disorders. It reduces fever and stimulates firmness of skin and muscles. In small doses it can relieve intestinal gas and work as a digestive tonic. Because of its drying quality, excess bitter taste may deplete plasma, blood, muscles, fat, bone marrow and semen, which may result in sexual debility.
Unripe bananas, pomegranate, chickpeas, yellow split peas, okra, turmeric, alfalfa sprouts and alumroot are examples of the astringent taste. Its qualities are cooling, drying and heavy. In moderation, it aids in healing ulcers and promotes clotting. In excess, it may cause constipation, distension, heart spasm and stagnant circulation. It may also lead to depletion of sperm and affect the sexual drive, and can give rise to a variety of neuromuscular disorders.
Ayurveda encourages the use of herbs and aromatic spices, which are also considered medicinal substances, to create a balanced mix of all tastes. The most common spices found in an Ayurvedic kitchen are: cumin, coriander, ginger, hing (asafoetida), ajwan, turmeric, fenugreek, garam masala, cinnamon, clove and cardamom. Ingesting small quantities of these aromatic, stimulating and carminative spices on a regular basis helps maintain the health of the digestive fire (agni) and the entire GI tract. Toxins that accumulate from improperly digested food can also be greatly reduced by slowly introducing these spices into the diet.
Obviously, there is more to food than just taste. Yet taste, from the perspective of its qualities, is very important for maintaining good health. Ayurvedic cuisine is unique in that it makes sure each dish is cooked and spiced so as to achieve maximum digestibility, avoid the formation of toxins and nourish all tissues.
Understanding the qualities in food, how they affect the doshas, and how they can be balanced is a great asset to prevent disease. An Ayurvedic clinician can make this a more practical task by providing specific guidelines and food charts for the individual constitution and health needs of each person. Ayurveda knows that the action of any medicinal substance starts in the tongue, so let your food be your medicine!

A person’s gait, foot prints left in the sand, even the way one holds their head tells volumes about the condition of your nervous system. While making such an observation at the food court of a local Mall I discovered an irony contained in the use of Heelys and their cousin Rolling Shoes.
A Heely is a pair of shoes that have a single wheel on each heel and a Rolling Shoe has 2 wheels on each shoe. They are all the rage!
On such devices kids were effortlessly gliding past me as if on an airport conveyor belt. My initial reaction was, “quit that before you crash into something and someone get hurt!” Then I made 2 observations that gave me reason to temporarily reconsider my position.
The first was that having these shoes on their feet and skating around meant that these kids were not parked in front of a TV set playing video games. Instead they were actually out getting exercise and loving it! That alone gave cause for celebration and yet there was more.
My second observation was that in order to move forward these kids had to place their center of gravity directly over the wheel of the shoe. This meant that they were forced to properly maintain the lordotic curvature of their low back and neck and the kyphotic curvature of their thoracics, which in turn minimized the chances of pinched nerves or subluxations from occurring. In other words they had to maintain perfect posture!
From a Chiropractor’s point of view the health benefit of that alone lessened my fear that they were going to hurt their self or others due to these devices.
Don’t get me wrong the obvious danger of a kid skating around without pads or a helmet in a crowded mall prevents me from endorsing either product in any way however seeing kids stand tall like god intended for them to do does bring a smile to my face.
Now all we need is to find a fun way for kids to eat Broccoli.
Despite the alternative treatment methods one uses to treat Crohn’s symptoms, in many cases, especially severe case of the disease, these treatments are often not enough. Most people still require medications to help control symptoms and put the disease in remission. A new type of medication that shows promise is Anti-TNF drugs.
A number of recent medical studies have found that anti-TNF may be an effective way to treat those who suffer from moderate to severe Crohn’s disease. What exactly is anti-TNF and how is it beneficial? The following information will help you better understand this medication and why it may be a breakthrough treatment for Crohn’s sufferers.
What is anti-TNF and how does it work? It is a group of medications that have been specially designed to locate tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) a cytokine protein created by the immune system. Anti-TNF works to find TNF-alpha in the bloodstream, and then removes it by binding it to blood cells and cell membranes before it reaches the intestine and causes inflammation. This treatment does not directly treat inflammation; it targets the immune system which helps alleviate inflammation.
Studies have found that cells which are affected by Crohn’s disease contain TNF-alpha, leaving many researchers to believe that the overproduction of TNF-alpha may be the leading cause of intestinal inflammation that results in Crohn’s disease. Thus, the theory is that by stopping TNF-alpha from reaching the intestines of Crohn’s sufferers, they’ll be able to find relief from their symptoms and prevent future attacks. In addition, studies are also finding that the use of anti-TNF for treating Crohn’s appears to be helpful in preventing and healing fistulas.
How can anti-TNF treatment help fistulas? It can help prevent the formation of fistulas by reducing attacks of Crohn’s and putting the disease in remission. As far as healing fistulas, anti-TNF medication is found to be effective when used in combination with surgery, particularly in those who suffer from complex fistulas. Studies found that using anti-TNF treatment with surgery successfully healed the fistula without recurrence.
The most studied anti-TNF drug used for treating Crohn’s patients is Infliximab, also known as Remicade. Multiple studies have proven that infliximab is both an effective and well tolerated treatment for managing acute Crohn’s disease. In fact, because this particular anti-TNF has been so successful, it has obtained the approval of the European Medicines Evaluation Agency and the FDA.
Of course, like any radical treatment, infliximab still presents some problems even though it is considered to be a medical breakthrough for treating Crohn’s. For instance, due to the fact that it contains a mouse protein, it can cause a delayed allergic reaction in some people. Furthermore, it increases the risk of infection, and is not deemed a safe remedy for people who suffer from or have had certain conditions including, cancer, congestive heart failure, tuberculosis and seizures.
In addition, there are concerns about immunogenicity occurring with the anti-TNF antibody which could cause the development of lymphoproliferative disorders and human antichimeric antibodies (HACA). Thus, more studies need to be conducted to further establish what the exact role anti-TNF antibodies play in maintaining the remission of Crohn’s, and how long the treatment will remain effective in patients who respond well to it.
Although Infliximab is the primary anti-TNF treatment used for Crohn’s, other anti-TNF medication being studied for possible treatment for Crohn’s disease include etanercept (Enbrel) and adalimumab (Humira).
Only time will tell if anti-TNF antibodies is the breakthrough treatment that Crohn’s symptom sufferers have been waiting for. Neverthless, the future looks bright.

There are literally thousands of weight loss programs out there today – which shows that losing weight is an almost universal preoccupation! When you examine what many of these programs are all about, though, you can see why people who lose weight typically are not able to keep it off for good. Unlike natural weight loss, many weight loss programs emphasize special products such as meal replacements or supplements. The problem is that no one can stay with this type of program for life – and as soon as you get off the weigh loss program, the weight is likely to creep back on, and you’re back where you started.
Natural weight loss is different. With natural weight loss, you use the simplest principle of all – the fact that, in order to lose weight, you must use more calories than you take in. You make this principle work in your favor, and you can do this in one of two ways. You can either eat less – and that doesn’t mean cutting out or minimizing entire food groups, but just eating less of whatever you happen to be eating – or you can exercise more. To be really successful, of course, you should do both.
To limit how much you eat, the simplest and most natural technique is this: eat only when you’re hungry, and when you’re not hungry anymore, stop eating. It sounds simple and logical – but it’s amazing how few of us actually do this! This natural weight loss technique has one great advantage – it teaches you to listen to your body. Given the chance, your body will tell you when and how much you need to eat. No book can tell you that. After all, your needs vary from day to day. Some people have a ‘hungry day’ followed by a ‘not hungry’ day, and that’s waht’s natural for them. ‘Naturally’ thin people are those who habitually listen to their bodies.
The natural way to exercise is to do it often, but at a low intensity. Throughout most of human history, people didn’t visit the gym, but they did move around all day, every day – they walked or rode everywhere, for one thing. And most of these people were not overweight. You can do the same. One way to do this is to establish a certain ‘minimum distance’ for driving, and stick to it. For example, you can decide never to drive if your destination is closer than ten blocks. Of course, there will be exceptions, but just following a policy like this most of the time will inject a lot of extra exercise into your day.

Alopecia areata is considered to be an auto-immune condition in which the body’s immune system, specifically the white blood cells, attack the hair follicles, leading to hair loss, which can be on the scalp or elsewhere.
In most cases of alopecia, the hair falls out in small round patches about the size of a quarter. Alopecia areata affects approximately four million Americans of both sexes, and all ages and backgrounds. The effects of alopecia are primarily socially and emotionally disturbing, because of its unpredictable effects on a person’s appearance. It is not life threatening or painful.
There are a number of Chinese herbs that can be beneficial for this condition. Chinese medicine treats the root imbalances in the body that result in alopecia. When the body is brought into balance, symptoms resolve themselves and slowly disappear. There are two patterns in Chinese Medicine that can result in the hair loss symptomatic of alopecia areata. The first is a pattern of Liver and Kidney Yin Deficiency. This means that the energy of the body that normally nourishes the hair follicles is deficient. When herbs are used that nourish Liver and Kidney Yin, hair can start to grow back. The second pattern is that of Toxic Heat in the body. This means that there is an inflammatory condition in the body that is a result of excess acidity from a poor diet, exposure to pollution or other toxins, or an infection. In most people with alopecia areata, these two conditions exist in combination with each other.
It is necessary to reduce inflammation and acidity in the body while nourishing the cooling yin energy of the body that nourishes hair growth.
He Shou Wu, polygonum or Fo-ti, is one herb that can be beneficial for people with alopecia areata. This herb has been used traditionally in China for graying hair and premature hair loss. It is a general tonic for the brain and the body, and can improve the quality of hair growth on the head. It can take three to six months of use to see the full benefits of Fo-ti. The Chinese have also traditionally used this herb as a longevity tonic.
Ligustrum and eclipta are also two Chinese herbs used to nourish hair growth by strengthening the Liver and Kidney Yin energy of the body. Research done in China have shown that these herbs can promote hair growth in people with alopecia areata.
Chinese wolfberries are also a general body tonic that improve blood circulation to hair follicles of the head. This herb can work well in combination with the herbs listed above.
In order to clear the inflammation and acidity that can trigger alopecia, mint, dandelion, and honeysuckle herbs can be used in combination.
