During the 2006 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Annual Meeting held in Atlanta in October, leading pediatricians met to discuss the dilemmas surrounding vaccine reimbursement. The round table, moderated by Philip A. Brunell, MD, Chief Medical Editor for INFECTIOUS DISEASES IN CHILDREN, brought to light some of the difficulties pediatricians currently face with the economic issues surrounding vaccines. The two-part round table will be published in the January and February issues of INFECTIOUS DISEASES IN CHILDREN.

The following physicians took part in the discussion, sharing their questions and concerns: Dr. Stan L. Block, a general pediatrician in Bardstown, Kentucky; Dr. Richard Lander, chairman of the AAP’s Section on Administration and Practice Management;
Dr. Walter Orenstein, Associate Director of the Emory Vaccine Center in Atlanta; and Dr. Thomas Saari of the AAP’s Immunization Task Force on Vaccine Finance.
Each has direct and relatable experience with the situation and offered suggestions
for improvement.

The troubling predicament is a result of the high price of vaccines and the risk involved in keeping a large, expensive inventory on office premises. Until insurance companies reimburse physicians for the cost of vaccines, they can be millions of dollars in debt to the drug companies for months at a time. When physicians are repaid, the return often does not meet the cost. Due to these high prices and long compensation periods, some pediatricians are now foregoing vaccine disbursement altogether.

The problems physicians are having administering vaccines is becoming a community issue, as Dr. Orenstein points out: “…when a child is vaccinated for most of the vaccine-preventable diseases, we’re not only vaccinating that child but also we’re vaccinating the community. Many people indirectly benefit from that vaccine because they are not exposed to disease.”

Ideas for permanent solutions are addressed in the second installment of the round table discussion. Some possible answers include the standardization of insurance companies’ minimum reimbursement rates, meeting with medical managed care directors to discuss corrective legislation options, and attempting to mend the problem at a national, rather than state, level.

INFECTIOUS DISEASES IN CHILDREN, published by SLACK Incorporated (SLACK) is the best-read newspaper among general pediatricians and nurse practitioners and reports on practical and noteworthy developments in child health. Each month, INFECTIOUS DISEASES IN CHILDREN includes information on allergy, asthma, and dermatology, as well as other news of interest to the general office pediatrician.

Want to Burn Fat? Eat More Protein!

Want to Burn Fat? Eat More Protein!

By: Joe Kozma

Muscles are made of protein. This statement is rather obvious to all of us. So to build muscle, equally obviously, you need to take proteins. This can be found in eggs, fish meat, cottage cheese or protein concentrates like protein powder.

To appreciate the importance of proteins in your body, you have to understand that your body cells are constantly being replaced by new ones. The tissue, made of protein, is in a state of flux, constantly being changed as old cells die and new cells replace them. Rheo Blair states “It is as if you lived in a building whose bricks were systematically taken out and replaced every year. If you keep the same blueprint then it will still look like the same building. But it won’t be the same in actuality. The human body is in a constant state of flux, it loks the same from day to day, but through multiple biological processes, it is always rebuilding itself.”

Science has proven that 99% of the atoms in your body are replaced within one year. Every cell in your body is always being recycled. Protein is what is used in the creation of new cells. It is the building blocks of your body. Skin, hair, bones, hormones, and antibodies are formed of protein. Save for water, protein is the most abundant substance in your body. Like other nutrients, proteins are made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. But unlike other nutrients, proteins are the only nutrients that bring nitrogen into the body. Thus by measuring the amount of nitrogen in ones excreta, compared to the amount taken in, one can estimate the amount of protein used for muscle growth. If the difference is positive, then muscle is being made. But if the difference is negative, there is a negative nitrogen balance, and the body literally begins feed on its own muscle to produce energy. Proteins are broken down by digestive acids like protease to smaller units called peptides. This occurs in the stomach where there are acidic conditions necessary for the digestion of proteins. The peptides are in turn are digested by peptidase, found in the duodenum, into amino acids. These are what the body actually absorbs and utilizes to form body tissue, including muscle.

There are 20 amino acids that are required for the normal growth of the body. Eleven of these are naturally made in the body and thus are called non-essential amino acids. The other nine have to be ingested into the body as it cannot synthesize them and are thus called essential amino acids. Foods containing both types of amino acids in the exact amounts as they are needed by the body are called complete proteins. Only when all the essential amino acids are available can the body grow muscles. Otherwise it starts breaking down body tissue to suffice the amount of essential amino acids for growth and repair purposes. Thus lack of these amino acids actually leads to muscle loss.

Dental – From Problems to Business

Posted by admin On February - 8 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

It’s perhaps the irony that the same teeth which give us good smile also pain us endlessly; especially so when dental care has become almost unaffordable if not for the insurance. The dental care business in USA counts to a few hundred billion dollars with dental/oral care product manufacturers sitting on the top of the ladder followed by insurers, equipment manufacturers and dentists and other care providers.

The rudimentary problems with teeth like smell, plaque, pitting and decay can be prevented by regular cares like flossing, brushing, visits to your family dentists, minimum of twice a year, preferably 4 to 5 visits. The more complex problems like periodontal disease arising due to diabetes take a holistic approach than just dental care. By regularly checking your oral hygiene, you could save unnecessary costs and undue pain in the long run.

Savings Plans
In the first rung are the savings plans. These schemes have dentists and care givers enrolled with them from across the nation. Anyone wanting to avail discount services from these professionals can get registered with such plans for a small fee of $10 a month for an individual. Group registrations are cheaper at $20-25 per month. This is a huge business considering the number of associated dentists.

Fees
Dentists are the frontline of this industry. Different packages such as cosmetic dentistry to various treatments generate huge sums for the industry as a whole. General consultation necessary for planning the treatment outlay cost over $65, while periodic examination costs $25. Figures for Crown and metal, or root canal treatment will cost anywhere from $ 450 – $600 and the costliest of them all is the orthodontic treatment which ranges between $2900- 3500.

Insurance
Insurance is a high growth sector in medical insurance. Although the industry turnover is not quantified specific to dental insurances, one can easily imagine it to be an astronomic figure. It begins with the preferred dentist program which costs $15-20 per month. Students’ insurance instituted usually by colleges, and group dental plans for employees ensure bulk revenue regularly for the industry.

Product Manufacturers
At the top end are manufacturers. The matter that high cost dental treatments are triggered by them does not fall into the scope of this article. But remember, not a single day passes by without hundreds of billions of people brushing teeth at least once daily. The monthly cost of replenishing of your tooth paste and brushes is perhaps enough for feeding half of Africa.

What is the Best Female Hair Loss Treatment?

Posted by admin On February - 8 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

If you are one of scores of women experiencing hair loss, you probably have dozens of questions about what the best female hair loss treatment might be for you. Should I change my shampoo? Is my hair coloring to blame? Is buying a hair piece my only solution?

To decide what the best female hair loss treatment will be for you, first you must find out why your hair loss is occurring in the first place. There are many medical conditions that can contribute to hair loss in women. Be sure to see your doctor to make sure that your hair loss isn’t the symptom of a greater, perhaps undiagnosed medical condition such as Lupus or Diabetes.

Some prescription medications can also be a contributing factor to female hair loss. A simple phone call to your doctor or pharmacist will help you determine if your situation is a side effect of your prescription. Two of the most common types of hair loss in women are androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata.

Androgenetic alopecia is a genetic condition where the hormone dihydrotestosterone causes the hair follicles to shrink until eventually hair will no longer grow from them. The best female hair loss treatment for this type of hair loss may be a prescription medication. You should talk to your doctor about your options.

Alopecia areata is not genetic, but rather an immune disease that affects a great many women around the world. There are several medical options available to treat alopecia areata. Which remedy is right for you will depend on many factors, including age and extent of your hair loss. Again, your doctor will be able to help you determine what treatment will work best for you.

Other causes of female hair loss may require no treatment at all. Factors such as pregnancy, stress, surgery and certain hairstyles can all contribute to temporary hair loss in many women. Over time, these types of hair loss usually reverse themselves.

The best thing to remember is, whatever the cause of your hair loss, your doctor will always be your greatest source of information!

Vasopro Ephedrine HCL

Posted by admin On February - 8 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

Vasopro Ephedrine HCL (hydrochloride) is classified as an expectorant bronchodilator. That means it’s used to thin out phlegm that’s blocking your bronchial passageways and hence causing you to feel short of breath. It loosens phlegm by thinning it and clears airways by making your cough a more effective tool for better breathing. Although it is only legal for its producers to market it in this capacity, everyone knows why people really buy it: it acts as a dietary aid and inducer of euphoria.

Vasopro Ephedrine HCL comes in the form of 25 mg pills. Dieters and bodybuilders commonly use these pills in combination with caffeine tablets and aspirin to concoct an ECA “stack”. When these are all taken in conjunction, they induce desired effects including suppressed appetite, increased energy, and the preservation of muscle tissue. It is also commonly used as a cheaper alternative to the drug Clenbuterol.

Vasopro Ephedrine HCL helps to increase thermogenesis, making the body able to better burn fat. It also enhances oxygen transportation and the aerobic capacity of the body. Bodybuilders swear by its ability to accentuate their cuts, and therefore use it in cycles before competition. Endurance athletes enjoy its ability to grant them increased stamina.

Possible and commonly experienced side effects include shakiness, tremors, restlessness, suppression of appetite, teeth gnashing, and headaches. Vasopro Ephedrine HCL is not to be used by people with heart problems, thyroid problems, diabetes, or prostate problems or enlargement. An interesting note is that although it is said to preserve muscle tissue, one listed possible side effect is muscular degeneration.

The United States government, undoubtedly in an attempt to control the use of ephedrine products for the production of “crank,” has outlawed the use or marketing of this product except for explicit use as an expectorant bronchodilator for asthmatic persons. If you order this product, or even purchase it at Walgreen’s, you will need to submit valid ID and will be capped at 6 grams monthly.

Depression Among College Students – An Essay

Posted by admin On February - 8 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

Depression among college students, with a focus on Freshmen.

Who is at risk, and what can be done?

Graduation time rolls around, and you already know where you will end up next year for college. Your two best friends will be joining you there, where you will all live in the same apartment complex. You have already put your first payment, and deposit in preparation. Now you wait.

When the time comes around, you pack up and move thousands of miles just to go to college. You haven’t heard from either of your friends yet, and you can feel the anticipation welling in your gut. You are so excited, you haven’t heard from them all summer.
Then you find out they never came. Both decided on going to a different college without you, or telling you. You keep telling yourself you will cope, and make new friends, but you still feel lonely and rejected.
Once you are actually in college, things are harder than you expected. You don’t have a car, so it is harder to get around buying food, finding a bank, and getting school supplies. Often times you find yourself taking naps, or just sleeping, because you can’t focus, or feel overwhelmed. One of the many signs of depression.

Money is tight, and you don’t have a job, because you can’t find any job openings within walking distance, you are afraid to ride the bus, because it is such a big city, compared to the one you came from. You biggest fear is getting lost, and not being able to make it home.

You often times feel overwhelmed by homework and such. You can never do it quite good enough, and are often times to shy to ask for help, so you sit in silence, confused, and helpless, like a grain of sand on a beach. Not noticed and not much potential.

This is the story of a college freshman. Probably many. That guy who sits next to you in math class, struggling with theorems, or that girl in your chem. class, under pressure to learn her Periodic Table of Elements. Who ever it is, they are there.

Depression effects 76 out of a 100 college students. Mainly freshmen entering a new world so to speak. Often times you won’t see it right away or not at all. This is an age group that’s tricky, states a psychologist at Davidson College in North Carolina, DeWitt Crosby said, They are adults by law, but they’re still dealing with making decisions on their own.

More attention is spent on alcohol consumption, and crimes among students, so that little energy or money is left for the awareness or the treatment of mental health. Often times the only funding is for counselors who will perform â scattershot therapy. They don’t actually treat what is wrong, but try to cover many possibilities of what could be wrong within a short period of time.

USA TODAY states in a recent study 14% of the 701 students who took a survey in the Boston area showed significant symptoms of depression, and over half of them could qualify as having major depression. If treatment of the depression was sought, at least 80% would get better.

The National Survey of Counseling Center Directors reported an 85% increase in severe psychological problems over the past five years. Also 30% reported at least one student suicide on their campus within the last (2001/2002) school year.

A hard part in treating depression is recognizing it. Some major symptoms of depression as told by www.campusblues.com are as follows.

1. Sadness, anxiety, or empty feelings
2· Decreased energy, fatigue, being slowed down
3. Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities
4.· Sleep Disturbances (insomnia, oversleeping, or waking much earlier than usual)
5· Appetite and weight changes (either loss or gain)
6· Feelings of hopelessness, guilt, and worthlessness
7· Thoughts off death or suicide, or suicide attempts
8· Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or remembering
9· Irritability or excessive crying
10 · Chronic aches and pains not explained by another physical condition

It’s normal to have these feelings at one time or another, but five or more, for a two week or longer period is something to pay attention too. Also watch for changes in the way the person functions. The anxiety is normal in college, when you are studying for classes, or preparing to take a test, but when it rules your life, and they way you think and act is a time to seek help and gain control again.

Strength Training Benefits for Women

Strength Training Benefits for Women

By: Joe Kozma

Most women desire to have a higher metabolism is order to further their weight control efforts. Strength training increases muscle mass and increasing muscle mass most definitely will increase an individual’s basal metabolic rate. What this means for females is that they will have a harder time gaining fat as the percentage of lean muscle tissue in their body increases.

Obesity can be greatly reduced by sustained participation in a vigorous weight training combined with a sensible eating plan. Osteoporosis is common among women who do not exercise as they age, strength training is a proactive step women can take to prevent bone density loss. Scientific studies prove that weight bearing exercise increases bone density. Strength training done with moderate resistance also fights aging by strengthening ligaments and tendons. Weight training has also been shown to improve balance by increasing the power or core muscles; which in and of itself will prevent injuries due to falling or stumbling.

Strength training has been shown to decrease blood pressure and increase circulation. Circuit training with weights has been shown to improve cardiovascular fitness. Improved cardiovascular fitness works to prevent cardiovascular disease. Women who strength train can also expect to perform better in sports, activities and life in general. Strength training women have more energy, strength, and stamina for all kinds of activity. Energy, strength, and stamina are factors which can also improve relationships with spouses, friends, and even children.

Who does not want to improve their appearance, confidence and self esteem? These are all improved in women who participate in strength training programs. Depression is a huge issue among the women of America. It is this writer’s contention that much of the mild depression treated with medication could be eased or eliminated by a sustained participation in a vigorous strength training program. Increased self esteem due to improved appearance and health is a natural antidepressant.

Anti-aging medicine is one of the fastest growing industries in our country today, strength training is almost always prescribed as part of the Anti-aging doctor’s overall program. Strength training helps women naturally age more gracefully because it naturally fights the decrease in muscle mass, strength and flexibility that comes with aging.

The benefits to women that strength training can provide are myriad, this writer doubts there are few if any women who would not desire to have the benefits provided by weight training. Ladies, it is time to put down the laziness and procrastination that has stopped you from self improvement. Start today and improve your life.

So what’s all the hype about protein shakes? You’ve probably seen the television commercials – Dan Marino saying how he lost 22 pounds with Nutrisystem – a popular meal replacement program. Ok, so what’s does this have to do with protein shakes? Well, one component of most meal replacement programs is protein shakes.

Meal replacement?

The idea with meal replacement is to replace a solid meal with a meal replacement like a shake, oatmeal, chili or energy bar. Whenever it is time for one of your regular meals you would eat a meal replacement meal when it is time for a meal.

What’s a protein shake and what’s so special about it?

A protein shake is usually a low calorie soy based shake with a high amount of protein – about 10-15 grams on average. They are a quick and tasty way to get a high-quality source of protein without a lot of extra fat or carbohydrates. They are easier to prepare and more convenient than a chicken breast. Perfect for anyone on the go or stretched thin for time.

How is a simple shake going to keep me full or even fill me up for that matter?

Numerous studies have shown that eating foods with protein fills you up more than foods with high fat content. You aren’t going to stay full all day; you’ll stay full for about 2-3 hours and then you’ll be hungry again. This is when you drink another shake. You’ll be eating 5 times a day, always keeping your metabolism active instead of starving it and prevent you from overeating. If you’re full all throughout the day, you won’t feel the need to eat or overeat.

So when you use a protein shake as a meal replacement you will lose weight.

They are healthy and are much better for you than a chocolate bar from the vending machine.

And if you’re like me and you like to eat late at nite, a protein shake is a great way to avoid snacking on high fat and high sugar foods, late in the evening.

And also if you’re like me you want to eat some solid foods now and then, like a nice juicy T-bone steak with a delicious sweet potato smothered in cinnamon butter…mmmmm, then you may not want to eat protein shakes for the rest of your life. And that’s ok. The beauty of it is is that you cannot be on protein shakes for the rest of your life.

Kind of weird me telling you about all the benefits of protein shakes and then telling you you don’t have to take them? Let me explain. You use them to get down to your ideal weight and then once you’ve developed the healthy eating habits of a meal replacement program then you’ll be ready to keep those healthy habits in place and go onto a weight management program which helps you keep that weight off.

So you go on a meal replacement program for a month on two depending on how much weight you want to lose and then you just have to manage that weight. You can lose anywhere from 10 to 20 pounds a month, about 2-5 pounds a week, with meal replacements. This allows you to lose weight quickly and safely without diet pills or risky obesity surgery. And it starts with a simple protein shake. Get started today!

At-Home Anti-Cellulite Massage

Posted by admin On February - 7 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

When you have cellulite any massage must be done very carefully in order to prevent the rupture of capillaries and irritation of vascular walls. Otherwise there will be a volume expansion of interstitial fluid in connective tissues and, so, the increase of lipedemas.

It is better to put the massage into the hands of an expert, but it is possible to attain good results – cellulite prevention or reduction of zones affected by this disease – with help of self-massage. There are some basic rules that are necessary to keep to when massaging.

In the course of cellulite the massage is made with light and smooth movements. Begin to massage slowly and to accelerate step by step. The massage should not be painful or cause bruises (if they will appear, it means that you have applied excessive force).

Begin the massage when muscles are absolutely weakened and well prepared for the massage. Hands should not be wet or cold. If you do not use any special means for massage, talc your hands so that they well slide on the skin.

The length of massage is 30-60 minutes, at least once in two weeks. You should never mass the zone of the groin, of the popliteal foss and the top internal part of hips around the pubis. The massage of the stomach must be done very carefully and with especially easy movements. It is better to put the massage of the stomach into the hands of a qualified expert.

When you have heart troubles, varicosity and illnesses of skin it is necessary to hold back from the massage and to resort to other kinds of treatment.

The name given to the system providing levels of wellness far beyond anything we have ever seen is the Computer Correlated Test Information system (CCTI).

The National Research Center’s capabilities were discussed in the previous article. Its results would be available to the 50 state diagnostic computer centers which would in turn be available to you, and would provide an extensive analysis of your health, providing a very accurate diagnosis of your present condition, as well as a sophisticated means of long range fine tuning of your body for optimal health and wellness in addition to other valuable information.

One might summarize the overall system being proposed here as a highly sophisticated and powerful outside medical information system that reaches into a branch of the present medical system (clinical laboratory science through the physicians office) to take full advantage of some of its most powerful analytical data, highly processes that data and then in turn feeds the researched and diagnostic results back into the system it came from–to the physician and the individual.

Over five years was spent designing the system and writing the book, and I see essentially no upper limit to the heights this system can reach. I truly feel the system would provide levels of wellness far beyond anything we have ever seen.Thirty to forty supercomputer systems would be researching massive amounts of highly selective health data, twenty four hours a day seven days a week, and then feeding the research results back to the state diagnostic computer systems. In addition, the system is completely open ended and would continue to process health data indefinitely–once this system is put into operation, there is no reason for it to ever shut down. Furthermore, because of the technology involved, it would continue to advance at a very rapid rate. I strongly believe that it would so radically change human lives over a 10 to 20 year period that the potential advantages of this system, at this time, are truly beyond comprehension and for that matter, I believe even beyond our imagination. Conservative estimates are 40% reduction in health care costs alone in the first 10 to 15 years of operation.

Just common sense dictates that if you correlate millions of significant clinical laboratory test result combinations to each individual’s health and personal environment, and then in turn correlate those results to tens of millions of other individual’s test results, miracle-like health related discoveries will in fact happen.

Now a logical question arises here. If this technology is in fact available than why isn’t it being applied by the current medical system? Well, unfortunately the present medical research is heading off in a different direction. It concentrates more on disease diagnosis, remedies and cures–which of course is also very important. It does not however, concentrate on disease prevention and wellness, and unfortunately, there is an obvious motive. There is very limited profit involved in disease prevention. Disease diagnosis and disease control are where all the huge profits are generated! Furthermore, an even stronger motive here is that the proposed system would not only fail to provide additional profits, but would also threaten to drastically cut into the medical industry’s huge present-day profits. And all indications are that the drop in profit would in fact be very substantial. As a result the new system being proposed here will have to be supported strongly by the public if it is to come into being. As previously mentioned, this system was intentionally designed around the sole interests of the individual and the public. (Not around the medical profession’s interest).

A short time ago I sent books and a four page condensed letter about the system, to 92 U S Senators asking them to get involved, to look into the system for possible legislative application. They need to hear from you!! We are the beneficiaries of this proposed medical system, a system that would dramatically change our lives. We cannot afford to take the chance of merely leaving that responsibility up to others, with the hope they will put their own business interests, or politics, aside and do the right thing in looking out for our interests! We know how that usually goes.

Given the current level of disease, the high level of suffering and the extreme economic drain on society, in spite of what we are lead to believe today about our health care system, history will not likely be kind to the health care system, as a whole, during this era, with the big question being asked, why did they wait so long to take advantage of the advanced technology? Why did they let so many people suffer, both physically and financially, for so long?

It is difficult to understand how such technology can continue to be ignored by the current medical profession. The technology to provide these type of miraculous changes in our health care system are currently fully available and ready for application.
